most newer ones have one HDMI port that will support MHL. Mine does at least, it's about a year old

newer, high-end major brand name ones maybe.  90+% existing tvs likely don't

anyway, as long as posters are aware you can just use a special dongle or a cable with the builtin conversion

Is anyone else not able to play replays of JLT matches today on a mac or pc today?

Works on my iphone, but when I try to play it on my mac (after signing-in) I get a message saying "content not available telstra signing error".  It worked yesterday.  My livepass is valid.

wow, must be pretty old! Pretty sure all Chromecast needs from the TV is an HDMI in. Maybe it's not compatible with HDMI 1? I dunno.

Yes, my understanding is that a mini-usb to HDMI adaptor/cable will output the screen to a TV. I've never done this personally, and I think you'll need to make sure both your phone and the TV's HDMI port you're plugging into support MHL.

Tagging @Clintosaurus as he's posted on this solution previously.

The adaptor takes care of needing MHL support on the TV by converting to HDMI output. The phone obviously needs it and as @Choke said most newer TVs have MHL support anyway. My 2014 Sony and 2016 Panasonic both have it. If the adaptor has a USB connector, plug it into a USB slot on the TV if it has one to charge the phone while connected to the TV so the battery doesn't run out.

the mhl cable is "supposed" to provide charging (to the phone) simultaneously while connected to the tv (without a separate usb connection).

MHL can only supply 40 watts of charging - thinking this is probably not enough for most phones?

dunno clint (without some research). would seem to be a silly feature if true because its sole intent is for charging phone while casting video. still wouldn't surprise me

don't think your tv's hdmi port needs to support mhl (most won't)

just make sure your cable includes a built mhl to hdmi adapter.....or you add a separate mhl to hdmi dongle to your tv's hdmi port

Thanks guys for all the info.

Choke, yes my smart samsung is one of the first made in 2012.  Research re chromecast says compatability isn't always 100% on my model...some chromecast features don't work.

So, last night I ordered a usb MHL-HDMI adapter for my phone to connect to TV.  It has an extra port for the normal phone charger so can charge phone while connected to TV.  It was only $7.00 on ebay so no loss if it doesn't work.

Adapter should arrive in the next week so will report back on how it goes.  Fingers crossed.

that sounds a bit too much on the cheap side, luci. might get what you paid for, but good luck anyway

I live in a bushland location and use a dumb phone ( better reach). But as a Telstra customer I was able to download the live pass app to my iPad Air, enter my Telstra ID and start viewing games. Was unable to view live coverage on my large TV but live pass  replays are available on TV (via Apple TV).

However for me the best replay quality is from YouTube. I'm not sure if it's the same for everyone but the quality is far better, far sharper this way and with a YouTube app on my TV I don't have to rely on iPad/AppleTV. And if I didn't want to watch games live the YouTube replays would be quite suitable (live pass not required).

Yeah the replay quality on the app is woeful, its worse than the live feed.

They use a different system for the AFLW replays to the mens and it's even worse. I can't even full screen it on my phone.

Most phone and tablet chargers are rated at 2.1 Amps @ 5.2 Volts. Applying Year 10 science of W=VxA the charger would be drawing about 11W, so 40W is ample. The charging circuit is actually in the phone/table itself and will limit the current draw to what it needs, so the fact its max is 40W won't kill it.

Sorry to drag this one up again, but has anyone else confirmed that using an iPhone/iPad to a Chromecast does actually work with the new AFL app restrictions? I just want to be sure before I go out and buy one!

Thanks

No, you can't only mirror an android device through Chromecast Home. I looked for it on my iPhone (already have a chromecast) and couldn't find it. A minute of googling confirmed it.

You may like to try one of the third party apps on the app store which may offer screen mirroring - although its probably more of a firmware / operating system restriction than a software one. My iPhone is supplied by my work and I'm restricted from downloading the 3rd party apps, so I can't test this theory myself.

Anyone with a Samsung phone with Telstra and a Samsung TV is laughing. Free live games and you can just screen mirror from your phone to the TV.

We did it at my mate's place the other week, quality was fine on a huge TV.

Chromecast. I bought one for this reason (watching footy) but since i have bought it have used it for all sorts of other reasons, for example casting movies and you tube content from website, streaming spotify and even the cricket on ABC radio last night. It comes pre loaded with a number of apps eg Spotify, netflix, youtube

A very neat bit of tech and only $60. In this thread Choke gives an excleent how to set up guide (which my son follwed to set up). Super easy - almost plug and play.

So noone has used Kodi to watch games?

Hadn't even considered that, would be amazing if it could be loaded to Kodi quickly.

That's weird. Chromecast is google and Google is Android. You would think they would be compatible??

There is an AFL app but it says you need a pass to watch live TV, but it has replay options.

As many will know you have to log onto the AFL app/website if you want to listen to live internet radio coverage of  a game.

Just tried it for the first time this year on my phone and I cannot find the listen live symbol. Anyone help.

Lots of messages about watching it.. but radio coverage is not as obvious

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
