Overnight on Twitter, Mark Stevens was effusive about his prospects at the club -

Mitch Hannan won't take long to break into Dees lineup. I'm tipping Round 1.

Sorry WJ, Stevens couldn't pick his nose and get it right, Hannan will have some serious competition, thankfully, Jason Taylor said he is coming off a shoulder issue and will be eased in

Thanks Saty - you should already know how I feel about getting carried away with players too early. That shoulder injury will make it even harder for him to get in the pre season work required to enable him to reach the necessary standard to warrant selection for the first game.

Still I reckon for where we were in the draft, two good picks, I know one thing, Plapp must be beside himself with excitement, will have a lot of talent at Casey again, all busting their chops to get into the AFL side

Played some footy with the fella at Bernard's, quiet type but a really nice bloke.

Was far and away best on in the grand final 2 years back, just had the ball on a string. His kicking is solid, but decision making is something he'd probably need to work on as often just took the long option (although this was part of the Anthony rock style of football).

In his first senior game for Bernard's a few years back made some real special plays and from there you could tell he would at least get some VFL experience.

Really big in the legs.

Good on him

Hard to get excited about another 189 - 191 cm forward who can take a hanger.  Jeremy Howe, Stephen Pitt, Matthew Bate (on lead rather than hanger), Sean Smith and son and so forth

LOL... I've dead set read it all on here now. Comparing a player from the modern game to Stephen Pitt! Guess we should just delist him now because Pitt, Bate & Howe didn't work out for us.

I would say that's more Mark Stevens overrating a Footscray player than anything else.

Without derailing the thread too much Bugg, ANB, Melksham and with a good injury run JKH and McKenna are all very good endurance runners. JKH, McKenna and in some way Melksham are noted for their skills. Bugg, ANB and Ben Ken are all big ball winners. And whilst he has bad games on his day Ben Ken plays with speed, grunt and goal kicking. My point is I think they are on the list for a reason and they bring complimentary skills to round out the list. Melksham was the only one of those guys drafted/traded for a pick in the first 2 rounds anyway, so we weren't expecting stars from the others and I think if we chase stars with every pick in the draft you'll end up with an inconsistent list.

Hannan has more X factor, but he needs to, he's a 22 year old with 18 VFL games to his name! And even if it was pick 46 he was our first pick in the draft so we'd be hoping for a top 30-35 player on our draft board.

If you want to draw a comparison, Hannan's path is very similar to Isaac Smith. Smith was also a 22 yo with fewer than 18 VFL games to his name when he was drafted at pick 19 by the Hawks. Smith started 2010 playing country footy, and ended up playing in a VFL premiership. He showed real x factor during the VFL finals series, but most were shocked that he went with the Hawks 1st pick.

I think our list needs more x factor players. I think we've got ample players that can play the same role as those mentioned above, but at a higher level. When I think of x factor players on our list, I think of Petracca, Hunt, Hogan and Garlett. The team can afford a few more in the starting 22.

Looks like a cross between Aaron Davey, Jeremy Howe and Jayden Hunt. I see a bit of all 3 in different ways e.g. The run down tackles, the speccie and the sheer pace.

Also these blokes who have to do it the hard way, are generally very determined to succeed and have more developed bodies.

Could Hannan be in the running for back to back VFL premierships?

Watching that highlights reel, he seems to have great skills: ability to kick goals from almost any angle, great sense of where to position himself in marking contests, great hands overhead, quick on the lead, and probably the most impressive, his second efforts and forward defensive pressure that are something that we've been a bit lacking in.

The Bullies have a pretty good side with great depth, so it doesn't surprise me that they didn't look at taking him, hopefully it will turn out to be a dreadful mistake on their part.

Good luck to him I would imagine he will be pumped to be selected in the main draft and will want to prove the Bullies wrong.

A bit optimistic I think.

Also, I wouldn't trust MS to know our list all that well. Pretty well stocked in those areas he's trying to break into.

After slotting Hogan, Garlett and Pedo/Weid into the forward line, Hannan would be competing with Watts, Petracca, Vanderberg, Harmes, Kennedy, Kent, Kennedy-Harris, Bugg, Trengove, maybe even someone like Brayshaw, Melksham or Vince who are squeezed out of the middle.

Just can't see it happening.

How he will perform at senior level is anyone's guess but if he gains some decent fitness there is a good chance he will be knocking or even banging on the door early in the season.

Thanks for your input again Mark, but he's a fair way off breaking into the 22.

Stickying this in my brain.

Who is Mark and why the reversion to Enforcer posting mentality?

That's a big call to be making.  I like the selection, and I think he brings a few attributes to our list that we're in need of, but he would have to absolutely tear the house down over his first pre-season to be banging on the door early in the year.  There are plenty in his role who are ahead of him at the minute.

Plus he fills a bit of a list deficiency we have in the long hair area (excluding Max's beard).

Hope he's got a right foot!

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
