Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Dockers want Jake Spencer

Nope Jack Watts is not the answer in the ruck, but then neither is Jake Spencer!

One of the reasons I want Vickery is for this purpose! Either him or search high and low in and out of the country for another option! Is Majak Daw a realistic option??

Vickery rarely rucks and when he does he's no better at it than Colin Sylvia. If he had shown anything then I'd agree with you. Would prefer Daw but in the light of recent delistings it would appear North are persevering with him.

For our current situation, Spencil is perfect. Perfect.

He's no Max Gawn or Goldstein but he is good enough at AFL level to provide a genuine contest, ensuring we don't get smashed should Gawn get injured and need a week or two out. He seems to understand where he's at and while he won't stop trying to get into the ones, will continue to ply his trade at VFL level.

He's not so good that other clubs will try to cherry pick him as was the case with previous #2 ruckmen Troy Simmonds or Darren Jolly. I reckon he's ours as long as we want him and he's bloody great insurance

Reckon Spencil would be quietly chuffed if he'd read his name as a potential trade target !

Satyriconhome, there is nothing wrong with Spencer wanting to play in a grand final for Casey, but if he got offered a senior contract to play elsewhere and he was required tommorrow he would leave.

Hence the one-year contract - if he gets any offers from another club to play first ruck & he wants to go, we wouldn't stand in his way, but we'd like to keep him on, year by year, as insurance for Maxy.

Apologize if there is already a thread for this, but couldn't see it. Anyone else notice the article on the AFL website stating despite him being contract, Freo and trying to lure Jake the snake?

Given he's contracted and our lack of ruck depth i can't see it happening, but if the offer were to good to refuse i guess we'd have to consider it.

Article is big men set for big moves. Sorry i couldn't get a link working.

Where did you here this AAC ?

I'd be OK if they want to give Jake 3 yrs contract.   If this were to happen, we would have to ensure we grabbed a mature backup ruck/follower.

Was in the link on post 2. Was amended by the author after i started the thread, so something changed. Most likely his info was wrong i guess.

Jake should just train as a forward, he's a solid ruckman, but if he could clunk a mark and offer a bit up forward i reckon he would lock that position down as the 2nd forward/ruckman

As a forward, he should be able to kick the ball with a modicum of accuracy, which he does not. The Geelong game last year was the best I have seen him play.

He can clunk a ball, not as well as Gawn, but he competes like a beast and will bring the ball down. He also likes hurting opponents, which is a bonus.

Griffin is looking to leave Fremantle.  Is he an upgrade on Spencer?  Could be a straight swap.

Not sure. Griffin is older, shorter, averages more disposals bit averages less hitouts and has played 90 games to Spencils 36. The are pretty even fr mine. Still prefer Jake as least he knows our systems.

If we were to trade spencil then i'd be for picking up Zac Clarke as a free agent and using our two live national draft picks to select Darcy Cameron from Claremont and Oscar McInerney from Casey.

Both early 20's showing plenty in the state leagues with big upside.

we have a few blokes who could improve their kicking but i reckon with more of a focus on his kicking and marking he'd give himself a really strong chance of playing more games in that role next year

Definitely need ruck depth, the only way he would go is if he requested it. I believe we re-signed him earlier this year.

If we could secure a younger developing ruckman as depth for Gawndog and offload Spencer than I'd be ok with that but otherwise we need coverage for Max.

Spencer is a ruckman, we need to keep him as backup.

He will never make it as a forward/ruck, he would have done it by now if he was.

The problem is not just kicking straight, he's not a bad kick at goal (strange action). The problem with most rucks (including Max) is they need to spend majority of time on ball, they are not natural forwards and don't now how to position themselves.

Stef Martin is a classic example.

In my view, I think we need to find someone who can play as an effective forward and who can genuinely support Max Gawn. For a couple of reasons. To prolong Max's career and to add potency to our side.

And it really won't be that hard to find someone who isn't a star but who unlike Spencer, can play that role well. The only reason we haven't is because we've had way too many other things to fix that have been prioritised. List building takes time. Especially when you've come from where we have.

No, that's the whole point, it is hard to find someone to play that role well.  Vickery can't/won't ruck, Vardy is injured all the time, there's no evidence Clarke can play forward and Jenkins isn't available.  Who is this not hard to find someone that you have in mind?

Valuing Spencer and looking for a forward-ruck aren't mutually exclusive - we should be doing both.

Shaun McKernan worth a look?  Goes at about 2 goals a game at VFL level.

My point though Rjay is a player like Spencer, i think would probably get more AFL opportunities elsewhere as a ruckman if he were to move, not many AFL quality ruckman will sign on to be backup if they have another option, and i think for Spencer to play more AFL footy for Melbourne that's what he'd need to do, be the forward/ruck, it would be extremely difficult for him, but i think that's the only way he gets a game without Max being injured.

That may be so but my concern is that physically Max will not last unless another ruckman can shoulder the load.

Not sure he wants to spread his wing, in fact the article that started this did not even mention Freo were interested in Spencer so i think the whole things a thought experiment...

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
