FAREWELL MATT JONES

Recommended Posts

Now, not putting too much in stock on statistics and all that, but I'd be interested to hear about any other example of 20 disposals at 90% efficiency (our best) being the daming ignoble end to an AFL career.

Who are these people who keep feeling the urge to puff themselves up by making grand denouncements?

Yes - I don't think anyone would argue that we don't need to find someone better, and hopefully soon.  His spot is not under threat right at this moment though.

I thought he was really poor even before the final error which summed him up.

He is not the only one that does it, but he continually evades players and has the chance to run forward but goes backwards and then ends up giving a 5 meter handball which puts a team mate under pressure.

He made a nice pass to Jones inside 50 but other than that I can't think of any meaningful contributions to the game.

And before the people bringing up disposal efficiency keep posting the stat. A handball to a teammate under pressure will count on this statistic but just because you hit the target doesn't mean it was good use of the ball.

Jayden was wearing a very "Che" black headband at the beginning of the year.

I knew we had to keep a close eye on him but the only revolutionary thing about him is that he is lightning quick, can tackle, kick, and GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL........

I thought his first quarter was good. Bit of both in the middle half of the game. Had chances to go forward with the ball and passed them up. Then the error in the last term that's classic Matt Jones. 0 tackles as well is poor.

Maybe one of Bugg, M Jones and Stretch can make way but our run will suffer.

If you want to take 2 of them out then prepare for Grimes or inside midfielder on the wing. Please explain how that will help us?

Stretch is young. Harmes is young and learning about the wing role (and half back today). Melksham might be an option next year. Hunt could easily go to a wing but we need him at half back. Salem needs a heap of fitness once healthy so he can do the hard running. We are short on wing options.

Just like Dawes at CHF sometimes a high work rate player with limited skills offers more than an exciting young player who doesn't have the physical ability to do the job.

We've got a player that has the lot. O Mac.

As for Matt Jones, his performance today was on a par with his performances throughout his career. Unfortunately it shouldn't cut it in a team aspiring to improve. But he's not on his own. Everything I've seen of Bugg isn't much better than that of Matt Jones. I can see Bugg being a whipping boy in the near future.

Haha harsh but not necessarily wrong. Although Oscar is young, that can't be denied. He had another bad but almost good day today, in that there were several occasions when he moved to the right position with the right intent and still botched it. Still wasn't the worst young tall defender on the ground, that was Lever.

Your comment about what cuts it in an aspiring team is interesting. Replacing a guy willing to do the hard yards with one who can't doesn't really sound like a plan to me. At the very least Matt Jones and Bugg are part of setting the standards on the work rate required and letting everyone know what's needed come preseason. If young players want his spot then they can show during preseason and in the GPS data that they deserve it!

Disagree. Was just the one fumble when the game was already over. Played better than Hogan, thats for sure.

Hogan was solid.

I've been one of his biggest detractors, but he was close to our best player in the first half.  He was terrific.

Faded in the second half, no doubt, and that error at the end was bad, but if we based things off an error like than then many of our players wouldn't get a gig either.

Calling it now that he'll be in the side again next week.

I agree He made 1 Clanger which cost a goal but I thought he was pretty good today!!

Instead of a thread on M Jones (who, even if his career isn't over just yet, obviously isn't a key part of our future), maybe we should talk more about Bugg?

Many on here love him but I'm not sold. Far from it.

Bugg is rubbish.

He is a space filler, but he fills a need we have which is speed.

He is a good ordinary player and he won't be a part of the team going into the future, but he has been servicable this year, and as we all know, no team has 22 superstars.

43 (mostly) critical responses to his flippant post yet no defence or justification from AJ. What a hero!

Jones is one of our very few outside options. He plays a very important role and has performed well at times this season. Until we have a number of genuine wingers he stays

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
