A KP forward for a full back?

Mate, we need a genuine gorilla who knows how to play the position. Not a makeshift one. We have hundreds of them.

If the Doggies and Freo can find two genuine full-backs from the [censored] VFL who are now best 22 in their side, surely we can do better than Tomlinson.

Mackenzie, Brown, Hurley. There will be others. Tomlinson isn't one.

He would be handy tho. Run & skills, with some height.  Worth a try to see what we can make of him, if not too expensive.

Hurley would be great.

I wouldn't mind seeing Tomlinson & Oscar in the 2 key back posts,  with TMac minding gorillas, or as follower. just a thought.

My understanding if we trade future first rounder we aren't allowed to trade any more future picks from that draft.

I like the look of  that team though. I would think Stretch and one of Hulett and Weid would be in there for kennedy and another not sure who. I know people don't like it but Jetta will be in trouble if they keep playing Salem down back (and he stays fit).

Correct. If we were to trade our 2017 first round pick for say a Dion Prestia, we could not the trade our 2017 second round pick. You can't trade out two future picks from the one draft. It makes sense as it stops clubs from trading their futures away.

Tomlinson is a wingman not a swingman 'stuie'...he can't hold down a key position and doesn't influence a game enough to play midfield at AFL level.

Roos wasn't interested last trade period and he's done nothing to make him anymore interested this year.

He's off to Carlton...

He's not yet 23yrs.  193cms & still only 94kgs.  He could easily fill out & mature.  If he has the skills to play wing & flank he's worth a gamble.  Maybe even mids?

Geelong and Hawthorn (just to mention two) have some very good players entering the unrestricted free agency window.

These guys must be looking at topping up their retirement funds. Time to look at a little pain perhaps for some of our existing list for the benefit of long term gain.

In an ideal world we need to add one quality top up player each year for three years. The requirement (hope) is that we get 4years (2X2) out of each player with the idea that they provide a base for our youngsters as we go forward.

Cannot see us going far if we just look at players who are on the fringe of existing clubs

Time to dream perhaps !!

Was talking to somebody within the club who suggested that our gps data suggests we are a seriously slow side compared to others, lacking in players with REAL speed.

Perhaps we might surprise a few and go for some quick midfielders?

The need for speed, or rather, run, agility & good pace, across the park.  They don't have to be Gary Rohan, who is off the table now IMO.

Found this on bigfooty on the Melbourne page and thought it was interesting..

I ran into a Melbourne listed player at uni yesterday and one of the things I talked to him about was what Melbourne needs to trade in. He said we need another ruck. I asked him about our defense and getting Hibberd and he said we didn't need him because we have enough players like that (he listed Salem, Wagner, Grimes, Milk and Hunt). He flagged that we are really interested in Prestia (didn't know we still were), I asked him about whether we need more mids and he replied with 'you can never have too many mids'.
Lovely bloke, nice enough to have a chat with me while we walked in between classes. Thought you guys might find what he said interesting, I sure did.

I definitely think we need to draft another ruck. Gawn is good enough to play up forward in a resting role, so playing more of the Dawes role (but better). Problem is, he can't do that due to lack of support. We also need an insurance policy. If he gets injured, we are done!

I used to have a few mates on lists, and one of them is still heavily involved in a footy club at admin level. The ONE certainty is that listed players are always the last to find out what the recruiting team is up to - so take this 'info' with a huge grain of salt (if you aren't already because it's from bigfooty).

Yep, agreed. And the Blues will continue to stockpile B/C graders. They're never going to win a flag that mob. They're also going to miss out on a high draft pick this year. SOS has to get everything right in the next few years and looking at his golden access to GWS and all those misses, I wouldn't be too confident if I were Carlton.

naismith is a name that is being thrown around a lot. if we are to get him, i wonder what his cost would be. i have no idea why he'd come to us as opposed to a team that needs a starting ruckman - he doesn't strike me massively as someone who can also play forward. big blokes get so overrated...and then you hope they turn into zac smith, but at least he had runs on the board as an afl-level player.

hibberd - 2016 second round pick

2016 second round pick from adelaide - anb

prestia - 2017 first round and 2016 second round pick from anb trade

naismith - 2017 second / third round pick

possible best squad of 25?

B: Neville Jetta - Tom McDonald - Sam Frost
HB: Michael Hibberd - Oscar McDonald - Jake Melksham
C: Bernie Vince - Nathan Jones - Dion Prestia
HF: Christian Petracca - Jack Watts - Dean Kent
F: Ben Kennedy - Jesse Hogan - Jeff Garlett
Foll: Max Gawn - Dom Tyson - Jack Viney
I/C: Christian Salem - Angus Brayshaw - Clayton Oliver - Jayden Hunt
Emerg: Aaron vandenBerg - James Harmes - Sam Naismith

meanwhile, strong talk that tom mitchell to hawks is going to be the news of the trade period...serious offer thrown his way

This might sound a bit strange, but I just wonder how heavily Melksham will feature in plans next year now that we've found Hunt. Hunt is a better spoiler and quicker than Melksham. It'll be interesting to see how that works. I wouldn't move Hunt off the half back flank unless the opposition find a way to blanket him (like St Kilda did) - in this instance, I'd move him forward (like we did).

The more I think about it, the more I think we should play Melksham off half forward and utilise his speed in our press. I just wonder if Goody's plans have changed with Hunt's emergence.

And I actually think our backline has some really good balance if you add Hibberd to Jetta, TMac, Frost, Omac and Hunt. A nice blend of pace, height, better kicking and solid one-on-one play.

I agree with you on Stretch having a place ahead of Kennedy. I'd have Jones and Vince drop to the bench, move Petracca onto a wing or into the middle and Oliver into the guts.

I disagree with you on Salem and Jetta though. Bringing in someone like Hibberd and playing him off half back to improve our kicking efficiency and attacking stocks back there will release Salem to play a midfield or a forward role. Both roles, IMO, he's more suited to. Brayshaw could be another who plays off half back setting up play (he played there in juniors) and then with stints in the midfield. His clearance work against St Kilda showed he'll be a force to be reckoned with as will Oliver, Petracca, Viney and Tyson.

I suspect the Hibberd deal may be a difficult one, simply because i can't see the Bombers taking pick 27 or whatever it is, they'll definitely think he's worth a first rounder

Would be worth playing milkshake on a wing in that case. But seeing as we have had jones and bernie rotating through HBF, I think he will find a place

Under the AFL’s grievance policy, it is understood he could invoke a previously unused clause in his player contract that would allow him to leave the Bombers and join the club of his choice next year.

Under the policy, any player who has a grievance with his club has the right to have that grievance aired through the AFL grievance tribunal as part of the AFL collective bargaining agreement.

Hurley could argue there has been a breach of his contract, particularly as Essendon has pleaded guilty to two charges laid by WorkSafe Victoria for breaching the Occupational Health and Safety Act over the club’s handling of its 2012 supplements program.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/essendon/banned-essendon-players-could-be-convinced-to-walk-out-on-club-with-rivals-circling/news-story/10d9f4f1f3855939e4cfd6c44cc1eace

Up to six clubs have spoken to Hurley’s manager Paul Connors about invoking a previously unused clause in the player contract which would allow the banned Hurley to leave Essendon and join the club of his choice.

All 12 suspended Essendon players – who could become delisted free agents if they choose – could use the same trigger to leave Essendon.

In simple terms..push come to shove  a player can tell Essendon where to jump. End of story  Essendon , as they have throughout this who sad affair have always attempted to muddy waters and run with false truths.  They still are.  Quite frankly some of these young men must have rocks for brains...or none  Some no doubt have been'smooth talked' by the club into continuing.. Major releief for Windy Hill...No huge law suits to contend.

Of course the League is in cahoots here also. They will not be advertising the reality of what players can do. The AFLPA  ( aka waste of space )  will do their backers bidding here also.

A player, if he wishes to leave, invokes breach of contract , spcifically the relevance to players health . Once triggered the AFL is bound to follow its own rules.  Here it has a choice though. It can lay its cards down and concede, or make it a long winded process to the same outcome.

The EFC and the AFL  are playing poker again....they are holding NO CARDS but bluffing big time.

The sole determining factor in reality is the player. If someone wants to call their bluff , which they shouldnt have to , they play the "Grievance" Joker.

Its still all about mind games.

Has there ever been a bunch so morally vacuous  and corrupt as this lot from Windy Hill.!!!!

It's interesting that there is an automatic assumption that the Essendon 12, should they choose to do so, have a "right" to leave Essendon. As I read the above, all they have a "right" to do is to argue to the AFL Grievance Tribunal that there has been a breach of contract. While they might be successful, I don't see the process as being simple, automatic or guaranteeing that those players could leave. Assuming for the moment that the Swiss appeal fails, I'm not convinced that the "Breach of Contract" argument will necessarily succeed. If nothing else, the Tribunal may ask why the players left it so long to claim such a breach. In other words, the Tribunal might see the argument as a means to an end (to leave the club) rather than meritorious in its own right.

And seeing how Gil wants Essendon back up asap there is IMO nine tenths of bugger all chance that will happen.

Just heard on SEN that there has been a lot of talk lately about Michael Barlow coming home to Vic (Shepparton boy) .. To which an anonymous caller (also from shepparton) confirmed and then went on to say that he has it on good authority, Barlow would be in the Red and Blue next season.

Apparently Barlow is out of contract, but is not a free agent. He'll be 29 in December.

I think I'd consider him as a free agent.. But I wouldn't give up anything less than a 4th rounder for him.

The questions is.. what's he worth? if anything? And would you want him in the red and blue?

What extraordinary hyperbole. Has had to reinvent himself as a tagger after being dropped earlier in the season by the team sitting third from bottom.

Would add midfield experience and leadership. He is a natural midfielder who wins big numbers of the ball and would allow Bernie Vince to play that full time half back role.

Its a yes from me.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week.
