Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 6

I'm not sure what's so difficult to understand about managing a first year player's workload. It's obvious Oliver is best 22 on ability, but clearly his tank is inadequate at this stage. It doesn't do anyone any good to burn him out.

And surely most posters recognise that from the outside, we are in no position to judge what is an appropriate work load for him. I too am disappointed he's not in, but I just have to trust the judgement of those in charge. It would be silly to think that I know better.

So Nutbean what would you have done starting from his Rested situation?? Eh?

He was rested and as the team performed well last week with Brayshaw the only obviously underdone player, Oliver goes to Casey... or would you prefer he comes in at the expense of Petracca who is untried at the top level?

We won't see all of Brayshaw Oliver and Petracca in the team at the same time this year I would say. None of them can run out games and the team can't carry 3 players only doing 65% game time.

Well you are clearly claiming to know better when you censor much of my brilliant writing Gnasher.

olisik - maybe you are being a little too negative.   As the year progresses, and maybe others may miss with a niggle or (hopefully only minor) injury, and they develop stamina I would be a bit surprised if we did not see them all together once or twice at least.

Heard from a very good source that Gus Brayshaw was not impressed with being dropped.  He is just not match fit for the next level.  A couple of weeks in the magoos should get him right.

from what I saw in pre season, Gus had a limited buildup and is a bit behind.

Well if we were to lose because we lack mids and clearances then You might have valid reasons for lamenting Oliver not playing! This might be exacaberated if we go in too top heavy! Agree with your last sentence!!

I just would have thought forward line talls Hogan , Jack, Petracca plays tall and you have Pederson also in the mix.

Oliver gives you another mid option and HFF

IMV better at Etihad Vs Saints going in small!

But what do I know according to you blokes?? SFA!

If you're alluding to Frost's inclusion here, I don't think he contributes in the same way as a classic tall. He's not terrible below his knees, is very quick and can run all day.

It's hard to argue that any team that has Pederson as a second ruck is going in top heavy.

I think we have the balance right, however, I do worry about the short break and expected a few more changes.

Again, I ask the question - how on earth would you know.

We can debate and have different opinions on Frost or Pedersen as to best for the team as they are both fit and therefore we can argue on frosts athleticism, Pedersens marking, whether we think there is room for both or not.

As to when players are fit to run out a game, need to be managed is something we can only guess at - it is something only the fitness guru's at the club can best answer.

So if we won't see all 3 of them in the team all year then you were right - if we do you were wrong.....

i am of the opposite opinion - I think we only need one or the other and I lean to Pedersen until Frost shows me he can impact games more.

If Brayshaw or Oliver were completely match fit I would have either in the side and have Petracca take Frosts place in the forward line. To me that looks to be a better balance - an extra mid and a forward whom I believe will impact more than Frost. If Frost was clunking marks ( as Pedersen sometimes does) then I would probably agree with keeping him but he is a tall that doesn't play all that tall.

The term "not impressed" tends to suggest that he thinks he's being hard done by. I could understand if he's disappointed, because most players are when they're dropped. But his form to date doesn't warrant being "not impressed".

We will see them all in the same team in the back half of the year for sure Oli.  Tracca can play deep forward, Brayshaw will be well up to speed in a month from now.

And Oliver will be in the team cos hes too good not to be.

I was only joking PF!   Just jumped on this thread and am smiling at the tussles you are having with everyone.  You are going off!!  I can see your view of course and the other views as well.  We all can.  But this is the way it is at the moment.  I love Oliver.  In fact I don't recall him doing a single wrong thing as yet, not once.  I reckon he would be a bit dark, but as someone pointed out he is only 18.  Just have faith in the combined experience of Roos, McCartney, Goodwin, Rawlings etc etc.  They do not wish to [censored] it up.  They are not being cute.  They wanna win and they wanna play finals footy.  If we are relying on Oliver to get us over the line in in Round 6 then we are in strife in the long run.

I think they'd be tracking the young boys' GPS info pretty closely to ensure they aren't fudging their wellbeing surveys by saying they feel great when really they're probably a bit fatigued and sore.

Maybe the club has fallen for it in the past and they're being extra cautious nowadays?

Our balance has looked pretty spot on over the last couple of weeks.

And Frost clunked a few on the weekend as well.  He may not have a huge impact but he is certainly doing his part.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
