Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Changes vs. North

Gotta start thinking about something else before I punch a wall. Today was a massive low point for us, and we will likely lose next round too, but in the spirit of trying to be productive I'm thinking about changes as well....

IN: Dunn, Frost, ANB, OMac
OUT: Kent, Garland, Pedersen, and either Oliver or Brayshaw

Oliver and Gus both struggled to run out the game today, can't afford to carry both of them, 1 needs to have a rest.
Kent is my favourite player, but he hasn't done enough the last 2 weeks and might have been carrying an injury today.
Garls... Love him as a bloke, but let's try something different, he struggled today.
Pedersen was just dumb today. He doesn't have enough of a tank with the new interchange cap, gets slower and slower and his skills go massively downhill as he starts to run out of puff.

Dunn an automatic in given North's size. Frost because the forward line works better with him there. ANB had a ripper game. OMac to replace Garland.

Upgrade a rookie.

Out Tyson. In Michie

Out Harmes. In Stretch

Out Brayshaw. In ANB

Out Lumumba. In Dunn

Out Kent. In Hunt

Out ROOS.  In GOODWIN

Out with the thought we have depth. Next week will test what depth we have.

I can understand the frustration here with "H".  But, he aint gonna be dropped.  Roos in the Presser was very clear in his assessment that the selectors got one right ("H"), and one wrong (Brayshaw).  Based on that, I'd be amazed if they drop "H"...

I reckon Dunn, OMac & ANB will come in.  Possibly Frost, too.

Out?  Kent.  Who else?  Take your pick...!

Bad news for everyone as Lumumba the rebound machine, known that way because it's always going to come right back, has "won praise" from Roos. This is extremely concerning as I cannot recall one disposal that did not put one or more of his teammates under unnecessary direct pressure. His run out of defence looks good and flashy for about 5sec but he almost always turns it over or gets himself into trouble. I would have him out but that's apparently not going to happen.

Get off Hogan. The guy is a one-out player but we clog our forward line and to top it off kick high and long with no purpose. He can towel up the league's best defenders but our structure is the problem. What do you want him to do? Smile and applaud his teammate's inability to hit a target or honor leads? Yeah, Hogan doesn't lead, but he hangs back and wants the contest. He destroys any opponent one on one. USE HIM! He WANTS the contact. We've been screaming out for a bloke like him for decades and people have the nerve to criticise him when his talents aren't utilised.

If no one is within 20 meters of him and his opponent, kick the bloody ball to him! His teammates ignore him 9/10 times because he doesn't lead into space. He just isn't that kind of player. I thought everyone knew this?

He has changed his style and application from 2015. How many times did you see him attempt to lead today? He was good last year because he offered multiple leads and when not taken had at least blown up his opponent with his endurance and would then beat them man on man. I don't disagree that we need to fix our forward structure to give him more opprtunity but he is coming across currently as lazy and petulant.

I would have gone with Frost in hindsight.

And I reckon Oliver will play next week. Unless he is really struggling for match fitness, I reckon he'll play pretty much every game up until the bye. Just as Brayshaw did last year.

I am pretty sure Oliver copped a leg knock in the first and this is why he was stationed forward for most of the remainder of the game.

Yes I agree in part. It also drove me nuts that whevever he got the ball he seemed to turn it over. I wasn't at the game ( I live interstate) but it struck me that perhaps we're not really giving him many live options to go to. We know he's going to run....we should be able to create some clear options for him so he doesn't have to kick to contests every time.

There is ZERO space to lead into!

Dunn at a minimum needs to come in to help manage their tall forwards. Garland needs to stay for Waite. We lacked run and need to replace players at least in part who can't run a full game due to role or application (Kent/Harmes) or fitness (Oliver/Brayshaw). Bugg, Tyson and Vandenberg on notice but you cant make too many changes.

In: Dunn, ANB, Stretch

Would love this setup

IN - Dunn, Stretch, Neal-Bullen, A logical setup, desire, workrate, Goodwin

OUT - Harmes, Brayshaw, Kent, Flooding the forwardline like morons, lazieness, heartless, Roos

Was torn on Pederson/Frost/Weideman

Out:

Kent, easily our worst against Dons, and thats saying something. Doesn't work hard enough at the moment.

Harmes, 2nd week of doing next to nothing. He's a goer but ordinary decision maker who kills momentum when things don't go well for him.

Given Roosy's tired comments, I know they'll freshen up a couple of boys through the week (i.e. Viney, Gawn etc.). But we also had too many blokes who couldn't EFFECTIVELY run out more 50/60% game given limited interchanges (Brayshaw, Oliver, Kent, Harmes) and this left too much for others to cover IMO. Brayshaw was brought back too soon, but is he better for the run? Does Clarry get saved a trip to Tassie & a spanking by North to play a full game at VFL to work on endurance? This is where the 3rd out comes from I would guess. In saying that, I thought Lumumba was terrible with ball use, but Roos thought they got him right, so he's going nowhere, whilst people calling for Garland, M. Jones or Bugg to be dropped are kidding themselves.

In:

ANB, in form at VFL, always works his backside off, can run out a game.

Stretch, better pace, desperation & ball use than Kent, Harmes & several others who have been getting gigs ahead of him so far this year. Can also run out a game. Should've already been in the team imo.

Dunn, a tall defender who can actually win a one on one contest!!! Sure he's not super tall but he knows how to use his body unlike both McDonalds & North have several big boys.

But as several others have noted, biggest changes need to be between the ears!!! McDonald, Hogan & Watts to name a few.......

We need a few talls to give us some capability to mix it up should Norths talls dominate as they have in the past.

Dunn and Frost in, Tom mac and bugg out.

ANB in Harmes out

Trengove in Kent out

Weiderman in Hogan out

Grimes in Garland out.

I would like to see Lumumba replaced by Stretch but I guess that is pretty unlikely given Roos belief he delivered.  We are not likely to win against north unless we have our best team playing their best football as this is not happening. I am happy to send a few back to Casey for education and to show the serious disappointment the club had with their performance on Saturday.

hahaha we looked tired and slow and you want to bring in Trengrove who has played 2 vfl practice match in 2 years (and was slow when he was healthy) and Weiderman who had limited pre season because they were building him due to his injury last year just have second think. Hopefully they will both get games in the back half of the year but they are a long way off it I would think.

ANB for harmes and Dunn for bugg I agree with though. Tom was frustrating with the ball but he is still the best tall defender we have. And I'm not sure I agree with it but I think they would bring Oscar back in if they were to take garland out (but I think he would stay in). Kent im leaning a bit both ways I like him and he is usually good defensively so do you drop him after 1 shocker or do you give him a chance? its hard. And assuming you give up the trengrove idea who comes in for him? i guess Frost but im not a fan of him in the forward line at the best of times....

I understand Hogan played a fair bit a Centre half Back as a junior.

He definitely needs to get out of the goal square and be at CHF or CHB.

He has to:

  • Move the ball quickly- no hand movements to players when he has a free or a mark
  • No playing for frees even if they are there, no talk back to umpires
  • Get on his bike

Bugger. Didn't notice that. I figured they were trying to manage his loads again. So he's a possible out then.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
