The return of the wizard!  Combined with Hogan that's a pretty formidable forward line

Wait until Petracca also starts roaming the F50

Scary times ahead people.... Enjoy the ride!

The kid is a  star! Quick,  evasive,  always keeps his feet,  knows when to go for the grab and when to stay on the ground for the crumb, excellent acceleration,  can turn on a dime,  rarely (if ever) fumbles,  elite goal sense,  elite forward pressure,  great field kick,  great football brain,  can be used for short bursts in the middle to get effect,  can quickly turn with a few quick k goals with ease.

40 goals in 2015. 25 years old with many more classy years left in him. Cost us pick 61 FGS!!  Lol thanks for this beautiful gift Mick.

careful what you wish for.. it seems to me that garlett may well be at his best when a little insecure but with confidence.

pump him up & risk him getting arrogance,  bad behaviours stem from this position.

F:        Garlett       Kennedy        Jacobs

HF:     Robinson      Waite           Betts

If you're going strictly with Malthouse 'list management' then you'd just slip Henderson in at CHF and move Waite to FF.

Who'd have thought that Malthouse and Hird would be the most destructive coaches of the 2010s!

As for our very own ex-Blue forward line rapier, I'm especially liking that Garlett seems to be getting better at moving around the ground hunting disposals and tackles. Will help smooth over the inevitable inconsistency of specialist small forwards.

Extra note - Garlett came in equal tenth for total supercoach points in the preseason, on exactly the same number as the greatly hyped 'breakout' Fasolo. Garlett's never been a supercoach earner so something has clearly changed.

Malthouse. What a coup for them.  Has one man ever caused so much damage to one club in such a short time? (Apart from Hird!) It would have helped if he was more interested in moving them up the ladder than sticking it up Eddie.

A great pick up for us.

Does anyone know where JKH is at? Did he play for Casey on the weekend? His career seems to have stalled a bit.

I honestly think Mick was doing us a favour. He had to have been. It was either that or he had lost the plot because Pick 61 is ludicrous for a player of his age with his fairly recent goal kicking record. When you consider for example how desperate Richmond are for a quality small forward, so much so that they are creaming themselves over poor young Rioli who is going to have a great amount of expectation on his shoulders from the get go.

Even before Garlett showed the form he has, it seemed like an absolute steal. It is proving to be that and then some.

Malthouse was of the belief that he was the best, therefore any player who didn't respond to his methods was not good enough.

Plus he's got some kind of personal phobia about Aboriginal small forwards, rationalised as a reaction to Leon Davis' Grand Final performances, presumably.

It was pretty well documented that Malthouse didn't like Garlett's attitude and he fell well out of favour, which had a compounding effect on form. I reckon selling him to Melbourne for crackers is exactly the kind of thing an arrogant egomaniac would do. I doubt the idea it would backfire or help us in any way at all even crossed his mind.

He has an intuitive goal sense. He crumbs packs well, he gets out the back when he sees it will work, and he finds himself in the right spot a lot of the time.

His forward pressure is also going up a few notches.

One of our most important, and approaching best, players. Love having him in the side.

Nasher could you lease explain what Malthouse didn't like about Jeffy's attitude? And one of the things I like about him is that he is so casual when he kicks a goal - he doesn't seem to have an ego.

Posted

If he can start turning those three goal games into four or five goal games he will be a genuine star.

The thing that about him that doesn't get any credit is his bodywork in marking contests. For such a small guy his ability to hold an opponent under the ball so that he can then run into an open goal is pure class.

Excellent get!

He and Hogan in the forward line are both something to marvel. I also think Kent is massively underrated.

Then add in the potential of Petracca (hopefully he can become what we think he will) and we have a very good looking forward line (other mids and Gawn to rotate through).

Currently my number one desire is to keep our list together, e.g. sign Hogan, and continue to develop the serious talent we currently have on show.

If this is done along-with another decent off season acquisition say Prestia or O'Meara, I think we will be well and truly developing a list worthy of challenging for a premiership (in a few years time).

He is in a bad position I think.  He's small and not terribly quick.  I would say he needs to figure out where his weapons are and develop them really quickly.  He's never going to be a first choice forward pocket at his pace.  I would say his best bet is to try to reinvent himself as a Sam Mitchell-style inside mid.  He's a nice kick over middle distance and has really good lateral movement, so he has some of the tools to work well in tight spaces.  He needs to seriously harden up and start winning contested ball, probably also build his endurance so he can create space through constant movement rather than pace.

Schadenfreude alert.

I was at a function for a 40th yesterday during the game. The husband of the birthday girl is a diehard Blue and when I saw on the phone that Garlett had 3 goals I couldn't help myself and had to mention it to him (over and over). He then brought up Betts, Waite and also started moaning about Mick bring Daisy.

He was buying the drinks too! Good times.

With a more offensive outlook and what appears a more polished middies  setup I reckon he is good for 60 plus goals this season assuming few absences.

I would send him Biff's way then. I would struggle to find someone whose has an outlook that is more offensive to your upstanding, suburban mum and dad, church going type than his.

Just your textbook gun forward pocket. We have had an unbelievable run with the indigenous boys in that position: Sean Charles, The Wizard, Davey and now Jeffy.

He's more than just a forward pocket. He can play high half forward, he can play on the wing, he can even run through the middle. We look so good when he's in the middle too.

I get that, but we weren't in such flash shape when he got here.

Malthouse ... "can you smell what we're cooking" ... flags just around the corner ... yet now they're on their biggest rebuild ever.

Yeah, I can smell it ... *runs for bathroom*

He seems really happy at Melbourne too.......the clubs done a great job in making him welcome and comfortable at the Dees.

He was in a bad place at Carlton, so his mental state probably has a lot to do with the football he is now playing.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
