Unfortunately a former number 1 draft pick, who at 196 cm plays like a pygmy, ensures we need another 196 cm tall who can play alongside Hogan. So we need Weideman.

Anyone know what time the picks actually start to be called out? I see the coverage starts at 6.30pm but I'm guessing there'll be a whole heap of BS before the action starts.

AFL has coverage of the event starting online at 3:30pm I thought I read somewhere.... not sure when it actually starts sorry

just breezed through a whole bunch of phantom drafts on bigfooty and a bunch of the media ones too... washup seems to be heavily favoured towards Oliver/Weideman... it's hard to say though to what extent that is just people changing their position based on following others

It appears Oliver does his damage by winning his own ball & over powering his opponents. Oliver looks an inside beast, is he the next Mitch Robinson or Dangerfield? I can understand if the club choose Oliver why they would make that choice, but I'm not sure of his disposal & skills at the next level up. If the club thinks his disposal by foot is or can be elite you would take him.

Parish seems to cut teams apart with good awareness & clever ball use. I wonder how high his ceiling will be as an AFL player. Is he already as good as he will be & would he be easily shut down at AFL level?

When I think of the elite midfielders of the competition they all have a lot of power or strength over the ball. Kennedy, Dangerfield, Hodge, Fyfe, Hannebury, Mitchell, Mundy, Watson & Ablett seem to all be power or strength based mids who you can't really stop. I can't think of too many elite mids with the body shape of Parish, his height is ok but does he or will he have the build to stand up in the contest at AFL level? I'm leaning towards the opinion that Parish will most likely become a good player & we would get good service out of him but Oliver has potentially a higher ceiling to become the type of Midfielder in the class of Wines/Dangerfield & that would be more valuable than a good serviceable player that Parish appears to be.

In the past there has been outside or skinny types taken high such as Toumpas, Whitfield, O'rourke, Morton etc. that haven't really developed. Where as the bigger bodies such as Wines, Stringer & Bontempelli have been the big wins out of recent previous drafts. So I can see why the argument for the big power based mid may prevail in this instance.

i do have to confess I don't know heaps about Oliver but from what I have read his disposal is pretty good

Ok here's my guesstimate for tonight including academy picks, courtesy of taking in everything from mock drafts, highlights, youtube footage, tea leaves, prayer and what I want; feel free to pick away during the countdown. This should make olisik happy too after making him nervous at pick 3: -

1/ Weitering - Carlton

2/ Schache - Brisbane

3/ Mills - Sydney (academy pick)

6/ Curnow - Essendon

I think we have some really good developing young mids and I think Stretch and ANB will develop nicely. I like the balance of Francis at 3 and McKay at 7. A big bodied utility and a tall KPP who could also develop to play second ruck. The thing I like about McKay is his age and potential ceiling. The idea of Weiderman is great but his injuries are such a concern and the Vibe of Curnow just isn't there for me. I don't think you would loose too much on McKay over Weiderman after a year even if he remained injury free. There was talk that if McKay was only a few days older he would be a top pick next year. We traded next year's first rounder to this year, and we could likely get him cheaper than he would of been next year with the added bonus of an extra year in the system (as JT said) and similar to Hogan with the mini draft. Just my gut feel and opinion.

I'm sticking with my original thoughts after trade week, and say we'll take Parish and Curnow.

I still believe that we were after pick 3 knowing that Parish was the Bombers preferred mid. And I think that Curnow would be a better fit for our forward line than Weideman.

I got one half of that equation right in my footy career, such that it was.

He's a big lad in that photo, however he really trimmed down by the time of the combine. He looks completely different.

I had to laugh at his AFL.com video. Funny, upbeat kid. He jokes about his weight but also says how competitive he is.

Funnily enough this combination of competitiveness but being a bit of a character makes me think we'll take him. Reminds me a bit of Petraaca (without the bravado). Part of what Roos is trying to build is a bunch of competitors but also an enjoyable, collegiate environment where the players are mates. I reckon Oliver would be a popular sort of fella and would contribute to that vibe.

I agree LFS, if there is a query on Weidermans ankle, why wouldn't you look at McKay if we were thinking tall. Get a year development in an AFL system. It's going to be interesting which way the cards fall. Who we pick at 3 changes who Essendon pick, and who Essendon pick may effect who we pick. If McKay and Francis were available? Maybe Taylor and co will just go on their 'best available', and cross them off as they are picked.

He would add to the mix of a few characters at the club...Gawn, Vince, Petracca with Col Garland as the straight man.

I believe mistakes in past drafts were a combination of factors but a re-occuring one was scrutinizing perceived shortcomings to the extent that some players were picked because they were not exceptional at many things but had few failings.

So some clubs tried not to make mistakes rather than foresee possibilities. With this in mind I hope we take Parish (for polish) and the Weed just because as well as obvious attributes, he has a certain calm "something".

I see higher upsides than Oliver for one. Go for it Demons, Ill be happy with whomever you get but I hope its these two.
