Ryan Bastinac

Not sure I really comprehend your idea here. Brayshaw came out of the box and hasnt stopped really. Sure tired a little at seasons end but hes young and only had one proper preseason.

Already shown hes a decent player with a good footy brain...imho

In relation to the comparisons made with Yeo and Gunston.

Don't worry, I love Brayshaw as much as you, recognise his talent and rejoice at a great debut year.

Brayshaw hasn't done anything either, but he's a talent we'd hate to lose. Just like Gunston and Yeo.

Look, I'm wasting my time on this thread.

WTF? Brayshaw has done far more in his first year than any of those guys mentioned did in theirs.

I think it's our time you are wasting.

IIRC, Bastinac was a ball magnet and goal kicker as a junior, and showed loads of promise in his first season or two. I suspect that the Kangas might think there's not a lot more upside, and are happy to move him on the strength of that. In the few games that that I've seen him play this year, I thought that he showed some solid ball winning attributes, but was let down by questionable disposal and decision making. A definite regular 'best 22' in our current midfield, but on recent form I don't see him lifting the standards by very much. I'd really like to be aiming higher, unless we can get him cheap.

He's an improvement on the blokes who've already been delisted with more upside.

We have a very good development team of coaches now. Guys like Bastinac probably have more levers to pull for improvement and he's still only young.

Indifferent.

All the Melksham bashing is fair enough as your ALL entitled to your opinion, however I feel you may be eating your words.. And gladly so!

Melksham is a player that not only fills a need (disposal, decision making, Kicks goals) but he was an extremely elite junior that is just about ready to blossom, a new environment could be an even bigger kick starter.. Why do you think people such as Ross, Goodwin, McCartney are so big on him? MacCallum and Goody both worke with him one on one and both say he just needs an opportunity - as the bombers midfield was locked in most weeks leaving Jake as a Flanker who jumped in for 2-3 min spells each quarter.

Just trust a little guys - bombers were extremely keen to keep him, not supporters - I'm saying the inner sanctum. Even if he doesn't turn into a mega star, we can't have a team of all mega stars, more important is a team we that's filled by players who have a specific role and Jake at vry least, is just that! Dom will be our super star recruit and Viney is absolutely elite already.

As for Bastinac, but slow but goes in hard and would be great depth! However I'm not sure we're into him!

This is probably the first post to make me feel OK about trusting the Melksham trade and it's on the Bastinac thread!

Good to see you back Nudge.

Hoping for some news from you this trade season. Cheers.

I think you've got Melksham mixed up with Dangerfield.

My son is a Kangas supporter (My late fathers fault) but he has no time for Bastinac. He believes Bastinac turns it over too much and the difference between he and Higgins is huge in skill. He isn't quick and in a team that has Ziebel, Cunnington and Swallow they already have enough of that type of player. We need pace and ball skills so I doubt Bastinac is a good fit. Irony here is that he was Scully's best mate and considered not far behind him in the under 18's and a similar style of player. I seem to remember Bastinac joking about the difference in contracts between Scully and himself and who was the more productive player. My son feared that GWS would poach him as well but has now gone cold on him as better young players have been recruited i.e. Taylor Garner. I am inclined to agree and suggest we look elsewhere.

Am not sold on Bastinac either. Some suggest hed walk into our B22...but that says more about us than him. Id be wanting to set the bar higher so that the RB's of this world ARENT our best 22

It's a "i'll pass" from me Better options out there surely

  • 3 weeks later...

Nick Bowen just tweeted that Melbourne and Brisbane are among 4 clubs who are into Bastinac.

Id happily take him for a 3rd rounder

Dont really get why theres so much hate for him here, hes had a couple of seasons where hes averaged better than 21 touches and in one of those seasons he booted 20 goals. He has a career average of 19 disposals

I know stats arent everything but on numbers alone he'd have been our 2nd best player behind Jonesy in those seasons

I don't hate him PA but I also saw quite a few North players move ahead of him in the pecking order.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
