2015 Player Review - # 9 Jack Trengove

Recommended Posts

The former co-captain has not played since he underwent surgery to repair a navicular injury in his left foot early in the 2014 season. Twelve months ago, he was nearly traded to Richmond but that was aborted when he failed his medical and required further surgery to have a screw removed from the foot and a bone graft. Has worked hard in his recovery and was rewarded with a contract extension and a shared club trophy for leadership on Bluey night. Hopes to be back as good as gold for round 1 next year.

it's a hope and dream with trenners unfortunately.

it seems feet are the new knees, and coming back from them is a super tough ask.

to be honest, if he can get back on the field this year i am expecting a lot of soft tissue injuries (hamstrings, calf etc.) as that seems to be the standard injury following feet injuries.

i basically don't even consider him when contemplating the future direction of the side. he's a pipedream rather than a reality.

One can but hope - IF he makes an full recovery and regains his speed then he could be a very valuable recruit.

Love the bloke but I wonder if he can stay at or go above his pace as shown in the first few years. Great clubman. Hope he gets back.

Probably the crux of my only concern.

Getting on the park..whilst commendable and to be heartily applauded. .is one thing.

Staying on it and adding to the equation is another.

I have my doubts. Happily be wrong as i think hes a good tough sensible player.

Has done well to get this far. Wish him luck.

Surgery suposedly went well and he is back running. Its as good as it can be at this stage of his rehab.

I think everyone hopes he can make it back on to the park and back to his early form with the Dees. Would be great for him and for us.

Ripping bloke and we wish him all the best.

Risk V Reward.

Given Jack's injury history it is difficult to see him getting back to the form that justified his No. 2 draft spot in his first couple of years in the AFL. High risk

But if he can we will have a readymade player who is a great mark for his size, a very good decision maker, has good disposal and exceptional leadership qualities. Also won't take backward steps. High Reward

Given he has been running for at least a month now I hope he is able to really ramp it up over summer and shake off the inactivity and the potential soft tissue injuries that may occur. He still has 7 months until go time next season. So surely there is no time pressure to get him right.

Will be a handy addition if he can get back.

Also the leadership award is an amazing recognition of the character of this bloke. If he can get back on the park and have a successful career those qualities will be very beneficial to our list.

Didn't James Hird have a similar injury?

He seemed to play some terrific footy when he recovered.

I know he is not liked on here but gee he was a great footballer.

The way his teammates got around him for his 'first run' a month or so ago, aside from whether he ever makes it back or not, was heartening to see in terms of team culture. It shows he's valued around the club but also hints at a strong bond in the group.

I know I and others seem to come across as negative Nancies. Its really just pragmatism..

Its a mighty big ask to get back to AFL/elite-meaningful fitness.

More power to the lad should he do it once...let alone maintain it.

Stoic determined efforts to get there are very impressive.

Even I'd make a point of being at that return game to cheer.

Just not going to get ahead of events and presume its fait au complit. I dont think it is.

Again. .happy to be wrong. ..its happened

Great bloke, speaks well blah blah blah. No ones doubting that. We all want him back but lets not forget 12 months ago the club had him out the door. A year to prove himself. Footys tough these days.

Footy's tough, but clubs have shown that if they think the player is good enough, they will wait a long time. See Daniel Menzel for an extreme example. Not suggesting Trengove is as good a player - just saying that in between "footy's tough" (Jamie Bennell being delisted after doing his ACL) and "as long as it takes" (Menzel), there are a range of possibilities.

Trengove is at the point now where we've lost any opportunity for salvage value. Shares are at $0.01 and our losses already realized. There is only upside - there is nothing to lose by waiting and seeing what will happen. We always seem to have enough poor players to move on without needing to scrap players who could still make it.

The club backed him with this new contract and I do too.

You forgot " if his foot had passed the medical he would be at Richmond right now"

Not often but on this one we are on the same page. Would much rather Trenners given every chance then continue to carry players who will never rise above VFL level. Sadly for him even if he plays next year, after that he may always be considered a year by year proposition. The club it seems is taking the hard but fair line with everybody.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
