But coming out and definitively stating, 'Colin re-signed yesterday' in a one-sentence post only to follow it up a week later by second-guessing the situation isn't exactly the smartest way to go about it on a football supporters forum.

Will be interesting to see what happens here.

As i've said previously, if Col were to stay, i think one of he or Dunn would have to move forward in order to allow Frost to come into our backline.

If Col does walk, I can see us chasing someone like Karnezis. I voted go, but wont be bothered either way to be honest as long as we get at least band 3 for him.

Colin told my source directly he'd signed. Why he would tell a relative stranger he'd signed, if he hadn't, is beyond me. You'd think he'd flat bat and say "working through the details".

This isn't heard it on the grapevine stuff. Which, by the way, I don't post.

I'd happily lie to a stranger in that situation if it put an immediate stop to a line of questioning, and was put on the spot. It might have been Colin's way of saying "I don't want to talk about it", but as the major introvert that he is, didn't think of the "flat bat" response first.

He could easily have been worried that a flat bat would lead to a line of questioning similar to "What's the hold up? Holding out for more money? Where's your loyalty? etc." ad nauseum...

I'd do the same to minimise the discussion to this rather than elaborate with a long winded answer that would provide more questions. And it wouldn't exactly be a lie to him knowing at the time there is most likely every chance he'd remain a Melbourne player.

The more I think about Col, the more I think it's really important that we move him on. Like Watts, I've always really liked Col. Seems like a lovely guy. He used to beat his man most weeks and attack the contest a bit, but his body language spells broken to me. He's at the point of no return.

We need hardened competitors and I think Col should be moved on. This will leave a handful of guys on our list realising that unless you have the attitude and commitment of a Viney, Hogan, Brayshaw, you'll be moved on. These are the guys now driving the standards and expectations for the rest of the group. This pressure to perform is the first step in building a strong culture. No more floating through games, with a lack of accountability.

The list will again be strengthened over the coming months and by the top of 2016, non-performers will have fewer places to hide and more competition for their spot.

The club should approach Col in the same way that I think they're approaching Howe and Watts - if we can trade him for something half reasonable, we should look to pull the trigger immediately.

Letting him walk for adequate compensation. A 2nd rounder would do it for me. I'm sure opinions will vary on that one though.

EDIT. It may also depend on who else we pick up or are in conversation with. I think we can cover Garland's loss at the back.

As i've said, with Frost coming back from injury and into the back 6 next year, i was expecting Col to go forward.

When Jesse White and Trav Cloke were out of the side he still couldn't get a gig. That should tell us all we need.

There is a big gap between Garland's best and worst, probably too big for someone of his experience. He was utterly woeful defensively and offensively on the weekend, but has been far better than that for most of the year. Others have already disagreed, but I think he will finish in or or around top 10 in the B&F this year.

At his best Garland can play on any forward from Franklin to Rioli, and has done so successfully in the past. That type of player in good form is virtually irreplaceable. Talk of Frost or Lumumba being that player is frankly laughable. One is completely unproven at AFL level, and the other is on the fast track to football oblivion.

Garland is not a leader, so you wouldn't break the bank to keep him, but I would be bitterly disappointed if he left and we got little or nothing in return.

Has had them since before he was drafted and has had them whether he was playing well or badly.

Maybe people will be happy and offer him a three-year deal is he gets some training during the off-season, learns a bit of pigeon-chested strutting, maybe get an 80s tennis headband to add some attitude.

I think some of these comments are a little simplistic. Col wouldn't be moved on because of his body language, he'd be moved on, because he doesn't put his stamp on the game as a senior player. He struggles to impact at contests and his man beats him more often than not these days. His skills are poor and he has engrained bad habits, such as failing to take the first option, yet taking the first option has clearly been a strong mandate from the coaching group this season.
