grimes like some of our players is still work in progress, he has some good skills but also has some deficiencies that can hopefully be resolved in the coming years.

Grimes is an average footballer with courage

He would be slaughtered in September....

I'm currently watching the replay and I'd forgotten just how good Jetta was yesterday.

Yeah i just watched it too and the backline quartet of McDonald-Dunn-Jetta-Garland was unbelievable

Grimes and Dawes were also good

Couldn't agree more

its so bloody annoying.. Its always cos the other team sucked its never that we won fairly and squarely or that we forced them into playing below par

Some people just cant seem to give us credit

Ha ha teams that get beaten by Melbourne are always "in crisis" Makes me laugh!

Michie looked shattered when he was subbed out of the game.

I really hope he gets another chance next week.

May I ask why though? He's never shown anything. Slow, not a great user of the ball, has been constantly pulled up on the fact he doesn't run two ways. I just don't see a guy who has the tools to be a good AFL footballer.

Yes I know he hasn't had a huge number of opportunities, but he has been far from convincing when he's had the chance.

Watched the game on Foxtel earlier today for the first time these are my impressions.

WE BLOODY WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- I am no big fan of Grimes but I thought he played well enough to keep his spot and was badly treat in a couple of umpiring decisions in the first half.

- Dawes played a lot better but you would not want to be hanging on his over head marking skills and his kicking for goal continued on from where it left off last week. Poor.

- Tyson played a lot better yesterday.

- The leavers both played well IMO I hope they stay.

I guess it is easy when you know the result but we always looked better than the Pies

The big one for me were the Foxtel commentators mainly Eddy he is just a fan club for the Pies there is not the slightest attempt to be impartial.

Half way through the second quarter I turned off the sound.

How Foxtel can let that crap go to air is beyond me.

I turned it back on early in the last quarter to hear him bleed.

Go Dees

Because he's rarely had an extended run of games in row.

The thing that is currently exciting me about this team is we're starting to really shape up as having a good even list, albeit with a few deficiencies, but i feel we're quite close to fixing the holes that still remain on our list

The way i see it we're still 6 players short of a genuine side.
2 skillful half backs
2 quick, line breaking mids who use the ball well
1 marking key forward to pinch hit in the ruck
1 small forward to apply more forward pressure and kick ~20 goals a season

i feel we already have 3 of these players on our list in Salem (skillful half back), Petracca (line breaking mid), Kent (small forward)

Hopefully the second mid comes from pick 5ish/rumored A grade mid (prestia/motlop would be ideal)

With OMac and Frost as defensive backup/ replacement for the ageing Dunn and Garland and hopefully Trengove to come back and provide another midfielder. Meaning we only need another good kick off half back and a Dawes replacement and we have a list that is ready to push for finals in the next two years.

......or it could be another false dawn and we stay down the bottom for another few years :) .

But a kid can dream

Watching the replay on fox footy. All pro Collingwood commentators unashamedly biased in their call. Why do we have to put up with this? What a disgrace Eddie McGuire is? How can Fox Footy get away with this? Have to watch it on mute.

It was a special thing they occasionally do called "Press Red for Ed", where instead of listening to normal commentary, you can listen to purposely biased commentary,

But I don't think there is the option for the delayed replay.

Bloody disgusting.

Have emailed Fox - no doubt will get the usual corporate 'your valuable input..... etc ' crap.

If Salem got through the VFL today fit and well I guess he could threaten Grimes though he did OK yesterday I thought.

I'm currently watching the replay and I'd forgotten just how good Jetta was yesterday.

He's such a smart footballer and quickly becoming an important leader at the club too.

He has that extra time without moving anywhere like Pendles and Mitchell.

Loved his 60 metre (ok maybe 50m) spoils too.

Cracking player. Different player to Wrecker but has that same sort of presence and fan love.

Just watched the entire game, came to following conclusions:

- Grimes no longer has a future in the side. He was asked by the coaches to work on run out of the back line but does not have this skill and agree he lacks the awareness. His mistakes are morale destroying.

- Noticed Dawes being overlooked as a lead a number of times. His team mates no longer trust him and its the body language and way team mates interact with him that make it obvious his team mate don't rate him.

- Missed too many shots (maybe half a dozen) and were lucky Collingwood did the same.. In a closer game this would have created a lot of pressure

- Agree Jetta possibly the most important of the back line based on his ability intercept and mobility.

- The back line did well, but Collingwood were running with the youngest, most inexperienced forward line seen in many years

- Desperately need Frost or Peterson or backup ruck. Gawn most improved player but a long way off having the tank for a full game with this new intensity.

- A less predictable forward line crucial. Very clear that Watts team mates look to him for good delivery into forward lines but its very clear that Vince and Brayshaw are the best at delivering to the forwards

- Viney just doesn't let up all day long. A gem.

Was watching a bit of the replay today but does anyone think Brayshaw has really starting to put some size on his frame. Looks much more solid around the legs and even his arms are starting to get a bit of definition.

Even Jesse Hogan looks alot bigger aswell. Gonna be some big boys running around for us in the next couple of years.

You been on the porn sites again picket?

Watching us beat the Pies at our ground and listening to Eddie cry on the Foxtel replay gives a guy the same result as watching Porn.

Maybe I'm just noticing his movement more than his disposal, but I don't mind Grimes at the moment. Definitely standing out more than he's been for the past few years, I think his instability in the 22 has given him fire in the belly.

I'm starting to see belief in Garland, just needs to keep his head up and not get dispirited.

Great weekend for our back 6, I'd love to see it every week though. Just have to work out how to stop the monster forwards when they rear their ugly heads

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol
