Has Bernie Vince become our best player?

Recommended Posts

Another top-notch performance yesterday by Bernie - he kept the in-form Armitage to his lowest possesion tally of the year, whilst racking up 38 possesions of his own (on the way to a perfect 10 in the coaches votes).

A question for everyone: Has the growth in Vince's defensive game and his overall toughness made him (currently) the best player on our list?

Personally I believe he's on his way to the Bluey at the moment; such a well rounded player - A silky smooth, goal kicking mid who's also our new number one stopper.

Interested to hear some opinions.

McDonald certainly hasn't gained any points in the Bluey the last couple of weeks so Vince would be pushing up there.

Personally, I'd still have Jones a nose ahead of Vince in terms of our best player. He's a bit more consistent, but Vince does have the x-factor. If he keeps up current form, he'll surpass Jones in my eyes.

Bernie has a well rounded game and one that makes him the archetypal footballer. Has the inside game, tagger, outside game, toughness, good overhead mark and can break lines with his kicking and positional play. His kicking for goal from the 50m arch is just about the best in the business. Lacks pace but makes up for it with his other attributes. He has become a consistent performer this year and plays with a desire and commitment lacking in some others. Hard to separate Jones and Vince. I like them being on a par.

Nearly in career best form. His ability to change from an outside midfielder with polish to an inside tagging grunt has completely blown me away with that development. Could see him doing what Crossy is doing now and play till he is about 32.

He had more X factor than Nathan Jones when he was at his best at the Crows and now he has returned to that kind of form. It's just a shame there are not more like him on the list!

I love what he has brought to the club. Hard work, professionalism and a willingness to be an excellent role model for the younger players.

What I love the most is that he has totally embraced the club. You can see in the way he plays and talks about the club that he loves being here and wants to do everything to help us succeed.

Now if we could pick up a player or two like him at the end of the year through free agency....

I reckon Vince's offensive game is benefiting from having Gawn in the ruck. And yeah, he's playing well.

AFLCA Votes- Rnd 11
10 Bernie Vince (Melb)
8 Leigh Montagna (StK)
5 Jesse Hogan (Melb)
5 Nick Riewoldt (StK)
2 Sean Dempster (StK

Looks like both coaches agree about with this thread!

Bernie is 2 players in 1: Can close down champs while getting fair bit of the ball and a few goals.

Looks like Jesse got 2 and 3.

Happy for both getting this recognition.

I think right now he is our best for sure, he absoluely smashed one of the comps form players and collected 38 lazy touches as well

Hes about to turn 30, I wish we got this guy 5 years ago!!

Still reckon hes got plenty of good footy left in him and like Crossy he will just keep producing into his 30's

Such a professional

Back to the sort of form that made him a star at the crows......so glad we got him off them.

Do we have what can be considered a 'best player'? Maybe Hogan, that's it. FFS we just got beaten by last year's wooden spooner.

These guys aren't our 'best' players yet but id consider Salem Kent Frost Vandenberg as players we genuinely missed on the weekend.

Vince and jones are about par this season, T-Mac thereabouts as well.

Id like to think that by the end of the year and into next year Tyson is back to his best and along with Viney these two should be challenging for the title as our clubs best/most important players.

Watch for Salem's game to grow to a new level next season

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
