I think Roos likes Bail.

Let's not forget that he has been around for a long time (one of only about 8).

He will need to take his chances to stay in but a little faith is probably allowable for him.

I'd say

McDonald - Westhoff

Dunn - Schulz

Jetta - Wingard

Garland - Monfries

Port have bought in Paul Stewart so maybe Fitzy goes to him

Looks reasonable to me. Westhoff generally plays well against us and was the difference last season.

I like the selections. Good role players hold their position.

Expect them to play the same roles this week on Broadbent and Pittard. If they get similar results then we should win.

If Bail is a better option and playing a defensive forward he better bloody learn how to kick goals from set shots.

He is ok on the run, but seriously, he is one of the worst set shot I have ever seen.

I've never felt confident when he has a shot.

Pigdog should not have been dropped, Play as a sub, do a great job and then get dropped...

Poor decision from the coaches imo.

Bail played really well last season both times against Port. Roos seems to like him...he had a couple of good games last year off the wing and playing deep forward. I don't mind him and think he can play a good role. He's a downhill skier though so yeah he's going to look a lot worse if we're playing bad, but if our mids can get on top like they did last week he has the potential to be dangerous.

Matt Jones will probably pull out - I honestly can't see him playing after that whack. I hope Riley holds his place.

I feel sorry for Newton. He wasn't great but I thought he earned his place for another game.

Rapt that Viney and Jetta come in and that Tyson has been given another week.

But looking at how Port play at their best, we need quick negating players to counter their manic forward surges. Which, by the way, I reckon it was Roos who was the first coach to figure out how to counter their attacking flair. I am a huge Bail fan but his flaws are glaring, so it can only be his negating role that keeps his place.

I don't know what I feel about this game - could be anything.

I think Bail simply lacks composure and if he can address this part of his game will be a good player for us. i think if he had been developed in a decent side he would be quite a good player. This said he needs to show improvement this season or might have to be moved on.

Reckon we need the leg speed Bail and M Jones provide against the fast running port. And that is what has kept them over Newton and Riley. Salem, JKH, kent will more than likely overtake them when they're back

Poor ol' Riley

SO happy to have Jetta and Viney back.

Fresh legs will be key here, so glad Tyson is getting another week. He'll be ripe to rip it up against Collingwood hopefully.

Hard to complain about the team changes. Realistically everyone played well last week and don't deserve to be dropped, but you don't leave quality on the table.

I'm scarily optimistic, which is a bad sign.

Might go stand outside before the game and hope a bird pees on me again. Was great luck last week.

People pay big money for that.

interesting that Fitzy has been named in the forward pocket...

I expected the two ins but the two outs surprise me!!

punters got it wrong but hogans heroes might be right about late withdrawal

Hard to believe he'll play there. I'd have expected him to start on the bench and rotate through the backline.

You are a bull shiter Biff!! Drugs is the only thing you've had faith in.

Just guessing, Bail and Jones possess speed and endurance for negative roles.

Yep.

Not saying I agree, but they get a go due to their pace and roles. Although Bail is hardly "express".

Society is to blame.

Maybe, but with Trengove out for port the addition of Fitzy to Pederson and Hogan will cause them issues...

I am really confident we will win this...getting the same feeling like I did before GC and Richmond...

. M. Jones had 24 or so disposals against Port in Alice Springs last year and bail had 20 odd with a couple of goals.....Viney and Jetta were in our best aswell....

Let's hope they realise that their position in the team isn't safe and they play the games of their lives.

If I recall correctly, that's where he was named last week as well.

Edit: Yep, just checked the round 8 match preview thread and he was named in the same pocket.

I work with someone who knows Ollie Wines really really well and spoke to him after last weeks match. He was furious after last weeks game that others did not do their job....I reckon if we hit them early they will lose faith... They are brittle. .They actually are not that different to us.. the difference is confidence. If we have it..... we can win.

PS Ollie loves life at Port... The Toump will do us proud and be in our Premiership team.... Different players, both great.

PPS At their interview Neeld asked him who do you reckon is the best player (at Melbourne's pick). Ollie said Toump.

The Toump will be fine.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
