Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The thread anticipating a thread that Jack Grimes has been named an emergency

Would rather him in than Howe. I like Howe as a player but he has not played a preseason game. Grimes has played 3. As you can tell I am a fan of Jack and I'm a little disappointed that others have been picked ahead of him when they have either not played as many preseason games or in my opinion have played worse ( Howe, Viney, Toumpas). Whilst at it, I am struggling to understand how Howe is picked ahead of Vince. Does this mean players have a better chance of playing when not playing for Casey than when playing for Casey. Seems odd to me.

For what it's worth I think he will address the weaknesses in his game and come back as an important player for us. I reckon he needs to build confidence in the magoos and will break back into the team about 1/3 way into the season.

As for misspelling his name, let's keep it how it is until he stops misspelling his kicking.

They clearly signalled this was on the cards when they took the captaincy off him, so they could drop him more freely. He was shaping up to be a great player before that very first foot injury and he's now simply been passed by younger, better players.

Exactly, Grimes being dropped does not equal depth.

I agree with this.

I feel for Grimes, he clearly loves the club and gives 100% each time he steps out there, but he was a victim of being given the captaincy too early in his career and a few bad injuries hindered his development as well.

He certainly has his shortcomings, and I won't miss the hospital handballs or missed targets over 20-25 metres by foot, but I'm hoping he can work his backside off and come back into the side at some stage throughout the year.

Vince is underdone fitness wise having missed the majority of preseason. Howe has done all sessions up to his hammy tweak in January so he is cherry ripe in terms of fitness.

Feel somewhat sorry for him but I did say that Grimesy was a bloke who should have been looked at for a trade in the last period. Apparently, the selection panel were thinking in similar terms to myself in that they don't view him as an automatic first 22 selection. I feel bad for Jack as he has been a loyal soldier but I'm not too browned off over this (as opposed to the attempted trade of Trenners). Grimes has played an average of 18 games per year from 2012 onwards and sadly hasn't eliminated the clangers that have marked his game for said last 3 years. I do appreciate as well this isn't a Mark Neeld faux punishment for 'not having a go'. Sadly, Jack's issue is not effort, it's polish. That kind of polish can be attained through proper guidance and hard work on the track but Jack hasn't gotten it yet. I hope, and I'm sure it is the case, that Jack will be out of the squad until this deficiency is addressed.
We haven't bounced the ball on round 1 yet and this may seem premature, but it should be said that if Jack doesn't get back into the first 22 then we need to do the right thing by him and try to find him a new home. Like a lot of others, he was hosed badly by the previous regime. Made captain before he was ready so he could sideline CS's playing group enemies and at a time when he constantly was called up to give the reasoning as to why we were so bad during the '5th quarter' as well as being played out of position at times, I would feel a little s***ty if I were he. Like some others, a change of atmosphere might be just what the doctor ordered if things don't pan out here (which could be the case as dropping a captain, even a former one, is a pretty big statement).

I am a Grimes fan but he lacks confidence so I hope they play him at Casey for a while and not make him the non-playing emergency.

I also think it's a sign of strength from the selectors to leave him out.

It looks like M Jones, Bail and McKenzie now are officially depth players - as it should be.

The advent of the forward press has meant that backmen can no longer be dour "defense only" type players. If you can't clear the lines through creative running or precise disposal, you become a liability. Unfortunately for Grimes he's a dour player who's not great in a one on one contest, and doesn't possess an attacking game.

I'd like to see him played as an onballer at Casey, and instructed to take the game on. I haven't given up on him, but he needs to reinvent his game.

Why is he even on the Demonland banner? Jetta should be there. At a crossroad and evolved dramatically.

Because he deserves to be.

He might be struggling on the ground at the moment but he has had to stand up to a lot in his years at the club. Even in his first few years some genius kept putting Jack up to do the after game interviews when we had been thumped again.

Jack should have been allowed to develop his game instead he had to do damage control for the club time and again. I hope he can come back and play good footy but even if he does I know he will always be the whipping boy for many on here who wouldn't know a footy if they fell over it.

Jack was a big possession winner in his early years so hardly a dour defensive only type.

I do worry about his strength in the contest though. I'm not sure when he started the veggie diet (sorry 'Webber', I know you won't agree) but is it a coincidence that Peter Siddle has also struggled since taking on a similar diet?

Being dropped is the best thing for him.

He needs to find his speed again at contests. Needs to trust his body and put it on the line. Needs to develop confidence in his kicking. He can't do that at AFL level under pressure.

Due to injuries and an ill prepared body he just hasn't been competing at AFL level and instead has just been hanging on for grim life. Now he can reset.

I said it a few weeks ago he needs to take a few weeks or even a few months to do another preseason to get some weight on and push his body back to AFL standard. Then he needs to come back and play at least a month of being in the best in the VFL. He has to be a physical half back flanker, that's the game to suit him. He can't have this lean listless body and game, he doesn't have the pace or skill for it.

Different issues, but look at Mitch Clark at Geelong. He looks a new player. Grimes needs that. I'd seriously consider sending him to train in different circumstances. Maybe some more proper sparring boxing. Or some martial arts. Add in some basketball even. Anything with spatial awareness and in close movement and strength. Then go to work on his footy skills.

Both had a lot of injuries and dropped weight to stay fit.

Instead of that approach I think they need to put the weight and power back on and live with the fact that if they get injured so be it. Otherwise they will be part timers at the top level.

I have no understanding of vegetarian v meat eating, but with supplements (legal) and the right foods I think you can get everything without eating meat. Time for Grimes to bulk up and muscle up although his current frame would do the job at VFL level so that is the other approach. Fix your form that way and see if you can compete when back in good habits.

Really can't believe the fall of grimes. Is captaincy the poison chalice? Haven't had a good one since junior and after years it's taken someone of the character of jones to turn that around

In his first few years grimes was so competitive, never lost a one on one, great spoiling and read it so well

What happened?

It's quite sad for it to have come to this, but I'm all for the decision. For one, I think it's the best thing for the side to not have him in the 22. For another, I think it's best for him to go back to the VFL, get away from the spotlight, and work on the deficiencies in his game. He can do that this year without having to be the captain of an AFL side, without having to worry about whether he should be dropped or not.

It might not work out for him, which will be even more sad. But it just might work out too, which would be wonderful for all involved.

Best of luck to him.

This is a poor thread. Grimes had the responsibility of captaining our club during those dark days, anyone who brings him down in a way that is unreasonable way should look at themselves and ask WHY.

He was only a couple of years ago a main part of our back line, midfield and leadership group.

Jack Trengove and Jack Grimes were only a couple of years ago, leaders of our great club and we should show them some respect. Period! Otherwise we will regret it in the future.

They deserve our respect as past captains of tho oldest club in the afl ??agreed

So if someone is not performing and no longer part of the best 22 we should gift them game because of their previous feats?

Your post has a nice sentiment but it won't win games or get us up the ladder.

Et, I'm not saying give him a game based on what I say, but some on here want to make him part of the reason for our bad form over the past several years...which isn't true one bit.

I'm just saying be kind to him and Jack Trengove , because years down the track we will take our hats off to these boys who did their best to lead our club through a [censored] of a time...

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
