Gees, he's a chip off the old block. Give him a mullet and he's the spitting image of a young Bret.

Any idea where Jake Lovett would go if on the open market?

2nd a round?

heard he had a major drug problem and likes a drink too much and nightclubbing to 4am

ha, may have some aggression as well, like his dah. drinking & brawling, tut tut, & those skinfolds... talent but weighward.

Wouldn't let the shortage of ruckman in the 2015 draft this far out bother me or even in 12 months time if there is a perceived lack of ruck stocks

Darren Jolly, Dean Cox, Aaron Sandilands, Ivan Maric, Sam Jacobs, Shane Mumford and Mike Pyke have all been significant contributors to their sides over the last 15 years. There will always be ruckman popping up.

think you may have forg otton one or so??? from that little timeframe

With the Demons starting the season with a winning feeling, one hopes that we won't be looking at this year's draft from the position of ownership of some early draft picks.

Yesterday saw the first of the representative matches involving young draft hopefuls when the AIS Academy took on VFL team Werribee ~

Academy guns on show

Those of us who follow these things can recall this preview into the shape of things to come:

LAST April, Angus Brayshaw played on the MCG with the NAB AFL Academy for the squad's annual game against a VFL team. He collected 21 disposals and won the MCC Chairman's medal as the best player on the ground. A year later to the day the No.3 draft pick debuted for Melbourne.

I take it from that draft order that he has the Power on top of the ladder...and the Tigers second?!?

Interesting that he rates Lovett a third round rookie - but has us selecting him in third round proper.

If, as expected, Dunkley nominates Swans then they'll have picked up two of the top three-five talents in the draft for very little. I have zero issue with father-son but the academy thing is a joke.

That would be third round - rookie, as in anywhere in that range I think. It's not clear from the way it's written, but I assume that's what they mean. I'd be pretty happy to get him for our third round pick.

With Petracca to come in next year we seem to have sufficient midfielder/forwards. Set with Kent, JKH, Garlett...

If we were recruiting for need what type of players are we likely to be looking for..?

Good ones. And I don't say that to be glib. The maxim that works is draft for talent, trade for position.

Draft for talent. We need depth everywhere. Would be nice to add more well rounded midfielders to the list and take a ruckman.

Draft for talent NOW though, not "potential" talent in some half-imagined future (Cale Morton, Jordan Gysberts, Lucas Cook).

Sure. That's what we did wrong. We picked assuming certain types would be the fit for the future game rather than just getting the best kid we could and picking them. I think the Saints (though I might have to eat humble pie on this) made that very mistake last year: they drafted McCartin (sp?) because they wanted a forward to replace Roo, rather than asking themselves if he was really the best available. Maybe it will work for them, maybe it won't, but the thinking behind it is still flawed.

I think they did, but I do think McCartin will be a good player for them.

You missed this one WJ. Parish is already top of the tree and barring injury, likely to be up there in November.

Click go the shears: Draft prospect Parish a true son of the soil

Parish got 34 disposals last week and Schache kicked 7 goals so they are probably 2 to look out for if they slip to pick 18.

Does anybody know why Lovett didn't play on the weekend?

I watched Schache kick an absolute bag the other week against Bendigo. He trained for a week with us as part of his AIS academy program so he will be definitely in our sights.

A 197cm key forward who could be a dangerous combo with Hogan has me salivating.

Expected top 10 this year.

If for some reason the Swans pass on 17 y o Josh Dunkley with their 1st pick we must swoop. He is Captain of Gippsland Power, an interleague Gippsland League rep at only 15 (seniors) plus named in (Sale premiership year) GFNL league team of year. He, as a 1st year Power U/18 player made Vic team in 2014 and has dominated all levels he has played at since he was barely a teenager. Built beautifully and has an abundance of skill sets too. There is a 14 y o younger brother hovering around Sale now as well. Dunks snr coaches him here in the Sale u/16's and they are always a premiership contender.

But they won't pass. They will get mills for their first pick (say 14-18ish) and will get Dunkley for pick 30+ ish. So really not worth the discussion because boh will be huge wins for them. If mills wasn't there it might be different (having to use first pick on him etc)!

3 players in 2 drafts that are absolute steals for the Swans IMO. We've done ok with F/S of late, but those 3 (Heeney, Mills and Dunk jnr) are bargains for where their pick is/will be.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form
