I heard the interview live while cooking a bar b que. I was actually surprised at how articulate and reasonable Blease was. I also thought he was quite fair and realistic, and even though he did comment on the matter of so many high draft picks failing at Melbourne, it was far less caustic than the vitriol on this site.

Sam's in for a rude shock. HE says he wasn't suited to the defensive gameplan at Melbourne, what he means is he didn't want to do the work. Now he's off to one of the best sides in the competition and he thinks they'll let him train at his own pace and gift him games when he shows no defensive intensity? Good luck with that mate. This is another ex-demon who's going to spend the next year twiddling his thumbs in the seconds and wondering what's gone wrong.

I guess Geelong, a recently very successful club, may have had just a little bit of a think about all this, and decided that it was worth a gamble. Nobody can know just how it will all turn out, but he clearly hasn't displayed any work ethic at the Demons. Can a leopard change his spots?

MELBOURNE’S instability has stifled the development of its first-round draft picks, new Cat Sam Blease says.

Blease, 23, was signed by Geelong on Monday as a delisted free agent after playing just 33 games in six years at Melbourne.

He was taken at No.17 in the 2008 AFL Draft, and along with a host of other high selections, has been unable to help lift the Demons from the doldrums during his tenure.

While admitting the players had to take responsibility for their performances, Blease told SEN the club also had a bit to answer for.

When asked whether they were developed adequately, the speedy midfielder was emphatic:
"I've had five coaches in six years. You can only imagine if your boss changes every year almost, it's hard to keep consistency," Blease said.

"I find it hard to believe that people write that (former Melbourne recruiting chief) Barry Prendergast stuffed up all the draft picks and picked the wrong players, I find that really hard to believe that 15 (or) 16 first-round draft picks could be no good.

"People forget how unstable the Melbourne Football Club has been at times and that's reflective of five or six coaches we've had.

"It's a shame it's that way, players have to take responsibility, but AFL footy's challenging at the best of times and when there's other obstacles in front of you, it makes it even more difficult.

“A lot of the players would be more mentally exhausted from their time (at Melbourne) than physically.”

Blease said the defensive side of his game had been under the most scrutiny, and believed it was something he could address at Geelong.

"Most of the time Roosy's game plan was based more around defence and I guess I lean more on the side of offence … and defence is something that hasn’t come natural to me," he said.

"It's certainly something I've been trying to work on over the journey of my AFL career.

"I just felt like anything I did I probably wasn't going to get an opportunity, I just wasn't in the plans at Melbourne.”

However reasonable you consider it, he still had a whack at his old club as he left. Bad form IMO. He might speak well, but he's gone way too early on the "Melbourne couldn't develop me" line. It irks me that he works on his major deficiencies only when he knows he has to find a home elsewhere. When he is a flop at Geelong, this interview will look mighty stupid.

I will start by saying I have never been a fan always thought he was a one trick pony.

However it is hardly his fault he was drafted by the MFC.

Was not good enough IMO however he is not the devil incarnate as a few on here are suggesting.

We did not want him and he has picked up a spot at the cats.

I wish him well but I think he will struggle at the cats he just ain't that good.

I'm not a Blease fan but the facts are that our game plan and that of Neeld didn't suit Sam. He could make it at Geelong where they are much better placed to use his attributes and other players far better at covering his weaknesses.

If he makes it at Geelong so be it but I doubt he'd have ever made it at MFC and it has little to do with development.

What, other players cover his weaknesses at the second best two way running team in the league. I think not. I think he's in for a rude surprise if he thought defensive running didn't suit his style of play and thinks that is going to be ok at the Cats. Sylvia says hello.

BBO you have an interesting take on this. I heard the interview live as well but I was driving home from work!! I thought he was not very articulate at all, he tended to waffle on too much and I am not sure why Half and Dr Turf let him ramble on. It crossed my mind and it is only a thought bubble that the elite A graders tend to speak very well, very concisely and with authority, a sign of their confidence, leadership and focused thinking. I thought Blease knew what he wanted to say but took 20 words to say what could have been said in 10 words. Maybe that is just me. However I had some sympathy for his argument, looking at the data how could we have got a dozen or more first round picks so wrong, it has got to be something about the development versus talent. Having 5 coaches in 6 years is a good argument for failure. He has a point but then having watched him over 5 years you still wonder why he couldn't improve his game given his physical talents. I still think his problem is his decision making, not his physical gifts. He is a dumb footballer with some other great attributes. I hope he matures and makes a go of it at the cats.

how is slagging off mfc going to help in any way possible in his future

he's at the cats now and the only thing that will help him is completely up to him alone
