Blues trying to get Jaksch , Whiley and 19 from GWS for 7. Great for the Blues if it comes off.

Maybe I don't understand but why did we give up a full 4th round pick and a downgrade to get Garlett who was unwanted, when Blues only give a 12 place downgrade for 2 players.

I think we are soft in the negotiating department.

If MC was at Collingwood or Essendon they would want half of Cats' list for him and we look like getting only Lumumba.

Prove me wrong Dees, get what we need for Frost, as some extra in the MC deal.

You're kidding right? Garlett was a bargain and a half!

You think we paid overs for Garlett?

Very wrong! Dee's got a bargain with Garlett...

I'm quite happy too hear we are more than likely too hang onto Picks 2 & 3. Jason Taylor will get these picks right.

Why not try?

3 to Port

Wines to Melbourne

Port get to use 3 for Paddy R

Why would Wines want to come to Melbourne? He will probably be playing for a flag next and we had our chance and stiffed him. A snowflake's chance in hell!

Just because he was unwanted, doesn't mean they were prepared to give him away for nothing, or that he has no trade value.

Also, what happens with the 4th round pick is irrelevant, because it'll be used to upgrade Jetta. Whether it's 75 or 95 or even 65, it has no value to us in trade terms.

Smart dealing it seems to me.

Am away for a short country break. Just had a nap. Must have still been half asleep when I posted.

What I was trying to explain was that Garlett was going to be delisted and would have been obtained with a last pick by us or whoever. We gave an early 4th round pick and Carlton are trying to get Jaksch and Whiley for only a 12 place downgrade. Not even a pick but a downgrade of 12 places for 2 players who are not being delisted otherwise.

I am ok with the Garlett deal but amazed at the proposed Carlton one.

Redleg, the difference between the two deals is that one is done and dusted and the other is still being negotiated and is far from signed, sealed and delivered.

I'm sure Jaksch isn't worth pick 7...as for the rest of the deal well, Whiley looks ok.

You're probably right. But don't forget that Wines grew up with Viney and, by their own account, they bring out the best in each other when they play together.

And wouldn't he be playing in a Grand Final with the Dees in a couple of years anyway!

Viney to port for pick 17?

Considering Roos spent all year talking about improving the midfield... we're not... uh, actually trading in any midfielders here.

I see a half back flanker, a key defender, and a small forward.

Build it, they will come!

Blease, Tappy and Strauss no longer have trade currency with the advent of delisted free agency.

Any club that wants them can get them for free after trade week, so why bother trading them in? At least picks have currency.

Agreed, no-one wants them. Gee we have developed them well!

Its looking as though GWS are stockpiling draft picks inside the top 20 picks to pass on to the Saints for pick 1 - which the Saints have said they want to go the the draft with 3/4 picks inside 20 like last year.

Doesn't bode well for us getting Petracca and not the best news for Petracca fans on Demonland.

I wonder if we can still force the Saints hand on this?

Who cares, we have picks 2 & 3

My old boy has watched him play and he thinks he wil be a great player. Was playing against men in the RDFL and holding a key position even dominating. If he didnt do his knee there woudl be a lot more hype about this kid.

I cannot say from personal experience with this kid but my dad has a pretty good eye when it come to local kids. He did pick little Brent Reilly as a future AFL player when he was playing juniors. He was also correct when it came to others from Romsey. So i tend to believe him if he tells me the kid can play.

Old grumpy men.. you gotta love them..

Are you describing BBO there?

The Purple Headed Warrior has thrown up a possible trade of Griffen to GWS and picks 4 and 7 to the Dogs.

Lol.

My purple headed warrior has surfaced and says there should be some action tonight!

Us coming out and saying we are happy with picks 2 and 3 could mean 2 things.

1. We have been told by St Kilda that they will be taking McCartin and we are keen to secure the best 2 mids

2. We are currently negotiating with another club around those 2 picks and they are not coming to the party as we had hoped.

Garlett, one of the best small forwards in the competition in the last 4 years and a 150 + game player (of which we have very few) and 25 years old (in an age bracket we also have few of)for effectively a 4th round pick and a slightly lower 5th round pick that we will likely not use is an absolute STEAL. We robbed Carltank today. I expected a minimum of a 3rd round pick.

If we can get Lumumba for Clark to the Cats and Varcoe to the Magpies as a three way swap then every club has won. That would leave us with picks 2, 3, 23, Billy Stretch, 83. With Frawley gone and Stretch in (combined with our delistings) and Blease looking for an out with Lumumba to come in, we have 3 current spots on our Primary list as of tonight (2, 3, 23). Looks like a very sweet position to be in. If we could get another pick for Blease in the 3rd round (2nd would be outstanding overs but lets be realistic) we are in fantastic shape.

I wouldn't fuss about the downgrade in the Garlett deal as we were only going to ever use that pick to bring Jetta onto the primary list anyway so we weren''t putting ourselves at a disadvantage!

We can use 83 for that which we are never going to use in the draft and everyone is happy

Should hold a spot for PSD

We need to move at least one more out than we get in, because at this stage we wouldn't do it. We are required to bring 3 players in via the draft (including F/S and Rookie upgrades) and assuming we upgrade Jetta, that leave us two active picks (2 & 3) to fill the remaining spots on our senior list. Which wastes pick 23 at this stage anyway. But also, if we keep one over the the PSD we waste pick 3 as well. Which would be almost the stupidest thing MFC have done in recorded history.

Reading a lot about how we bent Carlton over, got him for a steal, Roos, Viney, PJ & Mahoney are geniuses etc.

Garlett was OUT OF CONTRACT, and had nominated us as the club he wanted to go to. We gave Carlton a pick that we weren't going to use. In theory we could have got him in the PSD for nothing, but no point burning bridges.

He's a good pick up for a great price, but I think we're getting over excited hailing the negotiation skills of the guys mentioned above.

But getting him virtually for pick 61 means he comes to us for a late pick anyway you look at it.

The alternative would have been Jeff nominating for the draft, and someone else would have picked him up a lot earlier.

At the moment we have delisted 2(Nicho and Clisby) and lost Frawley.

We have picked up 2 (Stretch and Garlett).

Clark and Lamumba will cancel itsrlf out so essentially we only have room for 1 more on our list which at this rate will go to Jetta.

We will delist another 2-3 before the draft I would say

Byrnes retired as well.

Currently there are 2 spots available before upgrading Jetta.

Who cares, we have picks 2 & 3

So it doesn't matter to you who is going to be there at pick 2 or 3? - That's what I'm referring to in my post.

And I'm sure it matters to the Demon recruiters which club has pick 1 and which player that club will take.

So are you sure you don't care about this?

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
