It's early Dawes but he's not Gawn yet.

Demons manager of football Josh Mahoney said: "Max has injured the same knee which was medically repaired when he ruptured his ACL in 2011.

He is likely to require surgery to repair his damaged meniscus.

A further review of his ACL graft will need to be undertaken during surgery to confirm this diagnosis.

What this means is that there's still a risk of an ACL if the surgeon notices anything untoward with his ACL graft when the damaged meniscus is repaired.

At least it's not as bad as was first thought and with luck he'll be right to go in early 2015 pre season training.

"The initial reports from the scans have shown that his ACL is stable but there is damage to his medial meniscus."

From Dees website, so it appears not to be an ACL. But this of course will be confirmed during surgery.

I am a stupid arse when it comes to this stuff.

What does that mean in dumb arse language?

Damage to the cartilage pad on the inner side of the knee joint. Dumbed down enough?

His last ACL injury was thought to be just a meniscus injury until surgery, if I remember correctly. Not out of the woods yet.

correct. it could also be a major inoperable meniscus tear that won;t be known until surgery time

A damaged Meniscus is still a bad injury. if it is probably torn it will require stitches to repair. The repair process still takes many months of intensive physiotherapy!

Given Max Gawn has had two reconstructions on the same knee this is still not good news.

If he has done his ACL I'll call it! I reckon he may well be Cactus! Unfortunately! Three ACLs for a big man is not great!

Some Knee reconstructions go extremely well due to the fibres of what is left of the severed tendon still being more or less intact and partially attached to the knee.

This is at the better end of repair as when the graft, ( generally taken from the tougher hamstring tendon) is used the fibres tend to attach better if there is something left still attached to the knee. If not the graft is completely new.

A secondary meniscus tear either partial or full to the meniscus( cartilage) is at the upper severe end of Knee surgery!

The reason for this is because the cushioning agent cartilage ( meniscus) does so much more work

As I have said two previous reco's mean that the knee tendons are more vulnerable than ever.

It seems that even though some specialists believe that a repair strengthens the actual joint through a tighter knee. specific physiology of the patient means that this factor is very "Hit and Miss"

Specific quad strength is the key to both strengthening the knee and promoting a better base of strength and stability.

I hope his Meniscus is not torn and that his ACL is not anything other than a minor strain!

I hope!

Gawn just posted on Instagram that no problem with ACL and that he will be back training in 10 weeks

Yep, says he "dodged an acl".

10 weeks until he can train will eat a bit into his preseason preparations, but, for MFC, is is a reasonably good bit of injury news.

Go Max !!

Good news. I think we all know he's likely to have troubles with that knee for the rest of his career but if managed well there's not reason he can't give us quite a few years of really good footy.

Anyone got any updates on who else has to have post season surgery?

Pedersen with his nose but that's not too big a deal. Gawn, Spencer, Trengove now rehabbing.

Bummer that his pre-season start will be delayed, but I'll take it over the alternative. A relief!

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
