What's this bs Evans has come out with now? Players have to basically die before a PP will be awarded? Making it up as they go.

It's not a matter of if we deserve. I'm sick of the club bloody asking for hand outs ever other week.

Get your shite together and make the club stand up without asking for charity.

Just on SEN I heard something about the PP. I caught the back-end of the report so I didn't hear who made the statement, but what I did hear was, "...said it will be unlikely that Melbourne will be granted a priority pick." It was a serious report, not some [censored] journalist making the statement, so I can only assume it was an AFL official.

I think the club is obliged to ask for one, but considering the number of top 10 picks we have, the compensation we're going to get for Frawley, not to mention the cap space we have, I don't think the AFL will give us one.

EDIT: Wow, F-L-O-G is censored?

Barrett says "Forget Handouts Try Fighting".

I have changed my mind on PP's, I agree.

We should start fighting. Below is what I would start fighting for.

An equal draw so everyone shares equally friday nights and the better days and times and the worst days and times.

An end to club's Academies. This year and next the Swans will get 2 boys rated top 5 for a pick 20 in each year.

A direction from the AFL that quality FA's must come to us and other lowly clubs if we offer similar money to the top clubs.

An end to Salary cap benefits of some clubs like the Swans COLA and Carlton's Judd Visy deal.

An end to the avoidance by some clubs of playing at Skilled Stadium.

An end to AFL arrangements that deny clubs like Melbourne, access to players like the American, recently allowed to go only to Collingwood, because we didn't have the money to go to the USA to interview him.

A reduction in the salaries of the executives of the AFL which can lead to more money for the clubs. There will be no problem in replacing them if they decide to leave.

An end to the list benefits of club's like GC and GWS of more players on their list.

An end to working parties of the AFL dominated by Eddie and his selected mates.

Need I go on?

Yes lets start fighting for our fair chance to improve on a level playing field and we can forget the PP.

Given Evans is now telling the media we won't get one, perhaps we should adopt the Barrett method and fight. I would start mentioning the above and more in press conferences to get it all out there. We now have several of the media heavyweights behind us.

If we are to not get a PP so be it, but we need to fight for an even playing field. The rigged competition together with our incompetence in drafting has combined to put us in this position.

Sad, very sad, that we need to ask but that is what it is.

If they deny us again then the whole concept must be scrapped.

It was AFL Operations Manager Mark Evans saying a PP was unlikely because the rule was kept really to deal with some sort of player tragedy scenario? Huh, they make it up as the go. The wording of the rule makes no such reference. Then what is a player tragedy? A death such as Troy Broadbridge or if a player wrecks his knee in a match? Does Mitch C qualify? If the tragedy happens after the draft how do you give a club access to a priority pick? Evans is making it up as he goes.

As the Executive advises the so called independent AFL Commission of Drones you can pencil in a big No.

Basically all agreed on afl 360 that we need one, hoping if we got one a handshake deal with the saints occured ensuring they get mccartin

It is beholden on the AFL and its league clubs that the Demons are not shackled to their past altogether but given a key to a better future. Melbourne need and warrant a priority pick.

Crucially, any recommendation put to the commission would look long and hard at what Melbourne has the opportunity to do in the next three or four years, not what it has failed to do in the three or four just gone. Hogan, Viney, Dom Tyson, Christian Salem, Jimmy Toumpas, Jay Kennedy-Harris have only just started out and should be on a big upswing. Nathan Jones, Jeremy Howe, Jack Trengove, Jack Grimes, Colin Garland, Jack Watts, Neville Jetta, Chris Dawes and others are all good enough to be part of a team that wins a lot more games for some time yet. The Demons have the No. 2 pick in this year's draft, and probably No. 3, too, if Frawley goes. Whether they trade those picks or keep them, they have the chance to use them well.

Should, thanks Emma but will they. We're going back to the crystal ball again like last year and look what happened. The pick is not based on what might happen, it's about what the cold hard evidence tells us. We're no good.

I have doubts about JKH. Toumpas and Salem have shown very little to date. The other players named have shown to date they are not good enough to be part of a team that wins a lot more games.

The Frawley pick if it happens has nothing to do with it.

I think the loss of Mitch Clark needs to be factored in. His departure was due to exceptional circumstances and as such should be covered by the spirit of the rule.

You can add Jurrah to the equation as well, if we are talking tragedy scenarios. We took a big gamble to give indigenous player from a remote community a chance to show what talent is out there. It ultimately failed due to tragic split in Jurrah's community and extended family. Jurrah and Clark gone in tragic circumstances that would put a hole in most Clubs lists!

We lost 2 exceptional footballers to exceptional circumstances in Claek and Jurrah

If you remove the GWS game and convert a couple of those losses under a goal into wins, would we even be having this debate? I would suggest not.

Saying you have doubts about JKH who is a first year player that has undeniably shown promise is a sign that the justifications for this are getting totally out of whack.

Some faith needs to be placed in Roos' ability to develop the names that Quayle reels off. And despite this nightmare end to the season, the middle segment showed that the group is coachable. They just feel vulnerable at present with their careers on the line. I'm not defending that as a mindset, but it's a reality.

Yes, we're bad, but we've seen light at the end of the tunnel at different stages this season. I know it's tough, really tough, but more patience is required.

A curious position I thought for Emma. Not sure she really gets it to be honest. Problem with many a journo's scribblings, and I rate hers is that its an observation from outside a club. She may not fully comprehend the mechanisms by which a club works.

Maybe she should stick to young talent observations. She suddenly out of her depth

They shouldnt harp on about equalisation when its always the same teams at the top. If they want to keep the competition looking the same every year then the crowds will bore pretty quickly. This years ladder isnt much different to last years and will probably the same again next year. Same [censored] different year.

What if Carlton kicked straight?

What if Essendon put us away in one of the worst halves (the first) of football under Roos?

What if Adelaide had Walker?

What if...

What if we are historically bad and the rule to help the league in this scenario needs to be applied?

If you remove a couple of those close losses and add 5 goals to some of our losses to better teams, would we even be having this argument (would it not just be a dead certainty)? A spade is a spade. We have improved on our shizen 2013, but are no better than we were in 2012 and still are a long way off the form of our 2011 side.

As you say, JKH is a first year player who has shown undeniable promise, but he is a long way off cementing himself as a regular AFL player, he has shown signs, but until he cements himself it’s fair to doubt that he will make it.

I have faith in Roos to develop those names, unfortunately I have just as much faith that John Longmire can develop the likes of Membrey, Hannebery, Mitchell, Cunningham, Z.Jones, Bird, Rohan, Reid, Parker, B.Jack, Lloyd and the addition of two top 10 rated academy players over the next 2 years.

Not only does one of the top teams have significantly better senior players, it has significantly better ‘development’ players as well. Add to that GWS and GC. When those teams smash us now with depeleted sides, younger lists and more talent it is hard to see us challenging for a flag in the next 10-15 years, let alone winning one.

We may have had a lot of draft picks but we are not alone. The issue for us is that a good deal of them haven't worked out and the pool of talent is diminished because of the xpansion clubs.

We have not been able to replace those picks with talent. So we are getting killed twice. Once because the pool was bare to begin with, twice because we can't replenish.

    Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft.
