You would think Sam Blease has finally earned a call up

Jordie McKenzie has been offered 1 week by the MRP

Time to rest some of our youngsters? They look tired, though they aren't the only ones.

Doggies will be without Cooney (hammy), Giansiracusa (suspension) and possibly Ryan Griffen who was subbed off with a back injury vs Port

Viney/Salem looked tired and Bail/Kent had 'mares IMO - but not sure who is pushing through the ressies and don't want to drop players unless someone is knocking the door down.

I reckon there are five players they will consider for inclusion this week.

Terlich - he was 23rd man this week and we missed his pace - he may have been able to do a better job on Harvey than Grimes. The Dogs are also smallish up forward so he is a certain inclusion in my opinion.

Gawn - toiled manfully against Hawthorn's bigs (McEvoy et al) and showed he is worthy of another game. Big issue is whether he can come into a side that includes Jamar, Dawes and Pedersen so unless one of them gets injured I suspect he will be emergency this week.

Michie - racked up 30 touches and whilst it was more accumulation than impressive, he must be close to being given another shot and Mckenzie's week off makes him a likely replacement.

Blease - we now have a great method of play, but we are slowish and struggle to break lines unless the ball is in Jones, Watts or Dunn's hands. Blease was sensational in first half for Casey and he's a linebreaker. While we all can see he has some limitations defensively and lacks peripheral vision, the same can be said of several others who are getting a game ahead of him.

JKH - He hasn't set the world on fire at Casey, but he's always clean with his touches and he has that freakish goalscoring ability that was missing against North.

Ultimately though it will probably be:

Out: Mckenzie (susp), Salem or Riley

In: Michie, Terlich

McKenzie out, and Blease in is the expected change.

Blease was named emergency after some good form, and back it up with 25+ disposals, so he is the first "in line".

But this is not a like for like match up, abd Michie also got a lot of it at Casey. Therefore I'm going with :

Michie and Blease in for McKenzie (suspended) and Salem.

As mentioned above, Blease will give us something we haven't had all year, and while there is no certaity it will translate to AFL, now is as good a time as any to roll the dice, given the numbers he has been racking up.

The other option is, Riley in to the 22 for McKenzie, Blease in for McKenzie, Salem to sub. Only one change, but still keeps similar "types". However I think the two changes is most likely.

Playing Michie and Blease could possibly mean if they perform that Viney and Tyson can spend a bit more time at half forward instead of big midfield minutes.

Evans and Barry have both being doing tagging roles at different times at Casey so they might be considered. The reality is we are shuffling deck chairs a bit with those last 3 or 4 spots on the half forward/midfield rotation to which we don't have the cattle yet.

Actually Terlich was the emergency as Blease played for Casey and Terlich was held back. Notwithstanding, Mitchie sounds like a logical swap for McKenzie and Blease for Salem if Roos wants to rest him.

Out McKenzie, Salem (rest no reserves)

In Michie, JKH (sub)

Roos said in his after match presser that he thinks Michie is right to go and would talk to the other coaches about how he is going.

Just not seeing anything consistent from Riley or Salem. I'd drop one and make the other the sub, probably Salem.

Michie for McKenzie. Blease for Salem/Riley.

Garland needs to find his form and that's in the ones. He doesn't have the same game time this year as the other defenders yet.

Would like JKH back in somehow but can't see it happening. Kent had a poor game last night but he's taken JKH's role and showed much stronger fitness last week. Doubt we'll see JKH in the team again until the last few games, Roos says he's too tired.

Actually they name three emergencies every week. When Casey plays first they tend to only hold one back (or let that person pay half a game as happened the other week).

Regardless of who is held back, all three are being treated by the coaches as part of the squad.

In addition there is no intention for the held back emergency to actually play. I think that there is a fair chance the decision regarding which emergency is held over could be based on "who can afford to miss this week".

Terlich has played AFL level consistently. We know what he can do. Blease on the other hand was finding good form in the VFL. Holding him back means he doesn't pay for two weeks, potentially damaging his form.

If there was an injury on Friday maybe Blease came in, but they were willing to risk Terlich for 24 hours in order to make sure Blease gets a run.

McKenzie out suspended, Salem needs a rest (don't play him for Casey, give him a week off altogether), and I'd seriously consider dropping Garland who is just useless at the moment.

Not sure we have three players to bring in. Michie hasn't earned it, not sure Terlich has done well enough since being dropped either. I'm very reluctant to play Blease as I don't think he has the defensive game that's required, but we have to replace McKenzie and we need to move at least one of Salem and Garland down.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
