What do we do with Grimes?

How did he go against Adelaide? How did he go against Carlton? Gets a tough assignment each week. Some of you should get a grip.

What Grimes does not a lot of others on our list can do. Could Blease,Tappy,Strauss,Evans or Alex G read the play the play like Grimes does? I doubt it. He finds space and the ball without his direct opponent getting too many touches. His problem is obvious. His disposal is woeful. Maybe he should be instructed to go for the simple safe kick down the line.

Yep, some players are just not suited to the short kick disposal. They may see their target alright but unless the pass is bullet like, an opposition player can often intercept or run on to it. By trying to be too careful, the moment is lost.

I reckon he could be instructed to do as you've suggested or alternatively, a long kick to forward target is also an option. Players running and receiving a handpass from Grimes is another way of increasing his disposal efficiency.

Grimes can get the ball alright, has good courage, reads the play well and never gives in. He's at his best when he has a no-nonsense straight ahead approach to his footy. Terlich is in the same boat. Hopefully, after a years coaching from Roos, both these 2 as well as a few others will improve their decision making and disposal skills.

Terlich has improved IMO and there is no reason Grimes can't improve.

Grimes is the captain and should be leading by example.

He needs to fix it and fast.

He may be leadership group material for his around the club stuff, but he's no captain. Show me one thing he does on field that sets a standard.

He should hand it over to the one and only bloke that deserves to be captain. Man up like Trengove did and go back and work on your individual game which is well below standard.

I've read he needs to keep it simple. The sad thing is, he does.

He's stuffing up the simplest of things. Even when he's been in form he opted for the momentum killing sideways 20m kick. Now he does that and misses the target.

He gets turned around back into the corridor more than anyone. This is basic stuff. Make your man go boundary side, not carve us up down the middle.

His game against Adelaide was good, I think it was the Carlton one he was excellent, apart from that I can't remember his good games.

Very ineffectual or costly.

Defensive forward would be my Hail Mary just to keep the team mojo and sooky fans happy.

Grimes isn't going to get any better. His poor tackling, decision making and disposal won't get appreciably better. He's 25 and has played lots of games. So many of his mistakes result in opposition goals which are momentum killers.

Perhaps someone could put new words to the song "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" (from The Sound of Music)? Substitute "Grimesy" for "Maria" would be a start.

The side was great today. Well, for most of the match. The killers were the poor start, and lack of composure at crucial times.

Saw that coming Nash, and it was great. But it's hardly something we've seen very often.

I think standards need to be raised now to build on the improvement we've made.

Big stage next week, we'll see if he can redeem himself.

Defensive forward would suit him I reckon, get around it.

To be fair, it's not something a player gets to do often - in that fashion. And it's not just the spoil, it's the demonstration of intent; in my opinion it's always there and that's the reason I think the idea of dropping him is a joke. Especially when people (not you, I realise) toss in names like Blease and Strauss as potential replacements.

That's a problem, there's no one to push him out.

As for his intent, I think it's been lacking from him of late. It's something I've noticed all around the league with players tentative going for the loose ball (was a classic example in the Brisbane game this arvo). But Grimes in particular for us isn't hitting the contests like he used to, it sticks out too because everyone else is cracking in hard now.

He cost us a couple of goals today with poor decision making and poor disposal. For mine he can't play in the back half anymore but where else do you play him?

I find this over concern just a bit silly really. just as well Clark is off retired, & Hogan hasn't played yet, or we'd all be onto them as well.

If Grimes'y is out of form he's out of form.

Roos has mentioned that the past number of years since 2006, have been tough an many of our players, & that this has been a negative on their development. the more senior of this group since 2006 have had it worse, than the more recent ones.

If some are a bit tentative in the big games ATMO, then we need to be patient with them for them to try to recover from the Shell Shock they've been subjected to all these years they've been at the club.

Putting even more criticism & burden on them, when the team is going fairly well, isn't the way to treat a shell shocked soldier.

leave the criticism for others when they're not putting the required effort in.

Agree. He was really poor today I thought but his deficiencies can be easily fixed. He just takes so long when he has the ball and then makes a poor decision. The amount of times he sells his mates into trouble is an issue.

No way should he be dropped though. At the start of his career he looked so poised and knew what he was doing, Now he just keeps making the wrong decision.

Fantastically, both games.

The other games? Not so much. That's the problem. He's capable of being great, but he's also capable of being a liability.

Jeepers, ease up.

The point is a valid one - it's not that Blease or Strauss are right now in a position to challenge Grimes, because they're not. But we all want them to pull their fingers out, and what do we do if that does indeed happen?

On a related note, McKenzie has equal intent to Grimes, but we had no problem dropping him for his poor skills and drop off in form.

The thing that troubles a few of us is this - if the deficiencies are so easily fixed (and they probably are), why has he had them for years now?

A report on the match read that Grimes contained Wingard. Have I got it wrong because I was sure Jetta was on him?

Jetta was on Jake Neade for some part of the game, from what I saw.

I'd say Jetta and Grimes both spent time on Wingard.

I have it from a reliable source in support staff that he's been playing in a lot of pain every week - not sure of the injury.

If Grimes is the biggest issue we've got we are certainly on the right track!!

Well he should be rested then. He's not indispensable,

As I said in the post-match thread, the issue Grimes has is that he panics when he has time to think about it. When he's in a tight spot and has to act without thinking he's fine. His defensive work is very good. It's when he manages to get himself a bit of breathing space and looks around at his options for a few seconds that his brain gets in the way and he tries to do something stupid. The obvious solution is to simply ban him from trying to be a playmaker. He's fine if he sticks to his guns defensively and when he has the ball in hand his options are to belt it long down the line or switch if the man is wide open. If the coach simply bans him from trying to finesse the angled pass into the corridor that will remove most of his clangers.

I don't understand the thinking of backing Grimes without question but dismissing the notion of someone like Blease being able to make a claim for a spot. Grimes hasn't done enough over the journey to warrant that. His good games are several apart.

I reckon he tries to do too much, maybe because he is captain he tries abit hard to influence games, I'd rather him keep his opponent down, show good leadership and make good decisions when it's his turn to go

Less fitness, a bucket load more speed and weights training so he stops crapping himself - by that I mean not backing himself to run, break tackles or draw contact and use the ball under pressure.

Has actually improved a fair bit as a stopping defender but we can use Jetta and Garland in those roles. We need skill from half back. Terlich and Grimes don't provide it right now.

Maybe he needs time in the VFL refining his ball use and ability to wisely take on the game at times and not at others. If Cross retires he could play midfield but I really don't like him as a midfielder.

He's not horrendous but he's playing like a guy who wouldn't get near a game in a top 8 team. With Clisby injured I don't know who at Casey is up to taking his spot.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
