I know i should know this, but are you allowed to grab the bloke who has the ball by the arm? When Dusty did his fend off on Chip last night I wondered why Frawley didn't grab him around his wrist with two hands and start swinging.

I'd like him if he could make his point in a fraction of the time it currently takes him.

He loves the sound of his own voice but he does make some good points. He likes to remind us all how clever he is and awesome he was.

Pedersen didn't look fat, another highlight.

And courageously flew backwards into a pack going for a mark which I thought was a direct statement from himself more than anything.

All of a sudden the 3 year contract looks valid.

Didn't notice Pedo much on the TV but Dermie was full of praise in his work rate, something I was highly critical of having watched him in preseason last year

'Chicken wing' style bending an arm behind the back shouldn't be legal but otherwise of course you can grab a players arm if they are in possession and lock it up and stop the player disposing of the ball.

Martin is very hard to tackle when he fends though. Really you have to avoid the fend by being smart and then tackle him. Once any fast and strong player (even Nath Jones or Viney for example) has put a big fend on you then you are in trouble

When was the last time we had guernsey numbers 41, 42, 44, 45, 46 and 47 all line up together statsfans?

Dunno, but I seem to recall that we fielded 42, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 47 at times during 2000, with all but the 45 (injured) in the GF.

Fwiw…..

What really annoys me about Dwayne Russell (amongst other things) is he cannot say anything positive about Melbourne without also saying something negative. Case in point was when he was talking about Dom Barry and how he came from Ballarat.

His comment about Jones winning B+F and the best clubman as 'there was no one else' was just disgraceful. Yeah we've been poor. Yes Jones has been head and shoulders above the other players the last 2 years but we are still a footy club and have still had some decent, hard working players.

I've got no problems with real analysis even if it's hard hitting and blunt but blatant cheap shots aren't needed.

Dwayne should pay more respect to teams and current players as they are the ones who get him paid for average football commentary.

Dermie is a bit self indulgent but at least he sees some positives in a lot of players. I think he'd be under appreciated as a coaching mentor

Who else was there? Perhaps Garland?

Just watched the last 5 minutes of the game. Last night i had the radio.

Games like that sell memberships. Peter Jackson would be quietly happy right now.

We were lucky to win as we butchered two seperate kicks trying to keep possession. But that can be practised and perfected.

What i did notice was the tackling ferocity. I have not seen that since Byron Pickett in 2006.

How many memberships will be signed this week?

How many jumpers purchased from the Demon Shop?

Winning Practise Games is important to the club.

Winning Round 1 against St. K just became a serious challenge.

No more BS excuses.

Play the Roos way and we can win games.

You win a game like that in the real stuff and it will sell memberships, I don't think the needle will move significantly just yet.

Thought he had little impact early when played deep forward, but when let loose on the ball really played well.

His running was exceptional to get the ball off and then run forward to create an option and get the ball back again.

I thought Spencer was OK as well and am surprised by the knockers on here. He had to ruck almost single-handedly with his only chop-out coming from an 18 year old kid who played in bursts.

I haven't had a chance to watch the match yet but from those who did, which four players would you drop for the Geelong game to make way for the four guys we will be welcoming back?

If we plan to play our strongest lineup against Geelong then I think it would be something like this but ofcourse Roos may decide to rest some players or give some younger kids (Harmes) some game time.

I think that we could make the team quite a bit stronger for the Geelong clash. I would like to see Strauss have some consistent game time, Yes he isn't very good one on one abd always seems to be a couple steps behind however he did get 22 touches and can kick nicely. He does have speed so I think the reason he is often one step behind the defender is him adapting to AFL pace still (same goes with decision making).

Watts is going to have to fight for a spot in the midfield.

OUT IN

Max King - Dawes

Perersen - Hogan

Spencer - Jamar/Gawn (or both)

Blease - Viney

Nicholson - Watts

Barry - Kent/Clisby/Tappy/Harmes

Why are you dropping Spencer for an over the hill croak and someone who has yet to prove he is fit and can fill the first ruck spot? Edited by old dee

Many years ago my mum (a Footscray supporter, and not someone that takes things overly seriously) wrote a letter to Dwayne because she felt that he wasn't just biased in his views, but he was also badly informed when it came to talking about Footscray and their players.

What came back was a long, patronising reply that not only showed him to be an arrogant [censored] but a thin skinned one. The gist of it was that he was a professional and therefore knew all that there was to know about the game, and she was just a supporter who didn't really understand either the media or football. And there was a real undercurrent of 'you're just a woman so what would you know' to it also.

Now mum is a life long friend of Kevin Sheedy, Norm Smith came to her wedding, her brother in law just happened to play in 3 flags for us, plus she goes to every Footscray game she can - by herself usually because dad won't go to any game not at the 'G. But this Dwayne character talked to her as if she was a child interrupting the adults. She wasn't upset by this though - that ain't her style. She laughed at the reply and happily shows it to anyone that might make a comment that Dwayne is a good commentator. I'm yet to see such a person not change their mind after reading the self absorbed and condescending drivel he wrote her.

i hope you are wrong in this instance. I suspect a lot of people have been waiting for some visible change.

Sure it was a February hitout but the signs were strong imo.

I didn't expect to get within 5 goals last night with that selected side.

Very happy to be proved wrong.

What stood out was our adherence to the fundamentals (as highlighted by many previous posters) We looked and played like a proper AFL footy team ... and we looked self assured in the process. Nothing startling if compared to how other clubs go about it but when compared to our previous years in the doldrums, last night's performance was more than heartening.

Now we have to back it up - again and again. Just having Roos at the helm creates a natural motivation for the players. They won't want to let him down. Not only is Roos an excellent tactician with a message that would be easy to understand, he'd only have to walk into a room in order to motivate the players.

With Clark, Watts, Hogan, Viney and Garland to come into the side, we can only get better. There's a few others that will press for selection as well. Things are looking good.

Having 2 weeks off until our next match (against the Cats) might be a good thing as well ... it gives the group some extra training sessions to work on our new game plan.

she's probably forgotten more than dwayne has ever dared imagine.

there is more to footy than just positioning & how someone kicks.

& in a club sense, how to develop people & how different ones learn, & understanding the club environments effect on the list.

I suspect dwayne in a forest, would just see the trees, without understanding what keeps the whole ecosystem them there.

And the not yet committed members to get excited and buy a membership.

Next Thursdays intranet club game should get a bit ordinance. Planning my diary already.

I'd bring in the our senior Talls after the next game in 'The Alice', Friday, February 28

early March would be my idea of a time to step things up.

the first week of March I hope to see Dawes & Hogan back in the side alongside Pederson. Clark closer to the March 22 Rnd 1 game would do me just fine.

lets hope our midfield is pumping by Rnd 1.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
