If Col leaves and we sign a free agent (say Cross) compensation is zero!

Posted

Considering Roos stated that Watts and Sylvia were required players at the MFC, I can't see how that works.

Fairly simple generic statement froma coach which would be understood by most. "Required" meaning that there is a place on the list for him, there are always conditions attached.

If he demanded 700k a year for 4 years I think we would find other more pressing "requirements"

Uh... No.

Cross has been/ will be delisted, and delisted FA have no impact on FA compensation.

Maybe we should be more worried about Richmond?

Apparently they're the real threat, right..?

We can't and shouldn't hang him on having an opinion and presenting it as such.

OK. Can we hang him because he's a simpering twit ?

I agree with the second part of your comment... but if this was a generic statement, then why was it reserved for Watts and Sylvia only... Roos believes they are worth persevering with and so he is obviously doing all he can to get him to sign on.

I taped the show and the discussion about Sylvia was very brief.

Barrett stated that both GWS and Melbourne have put their first picks up for trade and in Melbourne's case ...

"Colin Sylvia won't sort of get involved in that pick two discussion unlikely as far as I can read the situation for him to be at Melbourne next year ..."

Posted

The FA compensation tailors to the clubs situation. Band 1, Band 3 and Band 5 follow the clubs pick. So if Frawley left next year and we finish with Pick 3, I expect to get Pick 4.

If Hawthorn loses Franklin, they will get Pick 17.

I would keep the compo, simplify the bands (have 2) and have only losing of the best players getting compensation.

As for Colin, if Coll or Haw get him we may be able to trade him but it would be after they lose Thomas and Franklin reapectively; so they don't lose their comp picks.

If we lose him through FA I would expect Band 3 and Pick 20.

And, again, Delisted FA is seperate to FA and picking up any delisted players does not count against our compensation for Sylvia. Please try to understand that.

If Frawley wants to leave next year, i expect us to match the contract.

Meeting a contract that another team has given and that your player has signed means overpaying for someone who wants to leave.

I understand what you are saying and I would keep Frawley too, but if he signed an offer sheet, I will take the top 5 pick.

When I met Colin at training at the beginning of this season he seemed very disinterested in all things Melbourne. I think that he is probably not very committed to a team that he needs to lead on field with his talent. Brock McLean ws the type of player that would take the game by the scruff of the neck but I think that Colin would prefer playing second fiddle in a top 8 team right now.

Lead onfield with his talent??? When will we see that?

Thanks for that. A lot to take in there! But doesn't it also make a difference about what they will be paid and length of contract?

isn't young stretch in the 2015 draft? F/S

don't want to stuff that up.

Sylvia won't leave for ambition.

If he had any of that he'd have left years ago.

If he had any ticker, he'd have taken the competition by the scruff of the neck and done something about success years ago.

The formula to decide what 'Band' a player is considered is secret, known only to the AFL executive and the Commission.

With that said, and what I have said often - Pearce and Chaplin each got Band 3 compensation for Port.

I expect that.

Is there a way for clubs to research what band of comp pick a player would be worth. Surely as a club you would approach the decision makers and try to get an indication.

I would suggest that anything around the 20 mark would reduce our efforts to retain Sylvia.

Before the rooster came on board, I really wanted Col to sign just to show that the club had some relevancy and he had faith in it.

Now I don't care.

Yes, he is an experienced big bodied player who is at times a strong clearance player,or but he kicks poorly far too often for my liking. He is not a leader.

So, meh.

Agree dandeeman, problem is the afl make it up on the spot. When the season finishes the afl should put out a list of free agents and what band they fall into so that the clubs can make an informed decision.

AFL Draft, Trade, Free Agency, List and General News

Tom Petrono has also said that Col Sylvia has just gotten back from his holiday, and will meet with new coach Paul Roos this week and hopeful come to a new agreement to stay at Melbourne.

Sylvia, a free agent - has attracted interest from several clubs, including Brisbane, Carlton, North Melbourne and Essendon.

I hope Col stays, but if he doesn't we must recruit a better player.

We hold high draft numbers. We deal hard against other clubs.

"You want it, you pay for it"

We must use FA to our advantage.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
