It's the time of the year. They haven't forgiven Carlton for beating them in the 1999 Preliminary Final.

I haven't forgiven Carlton for Ron Barrassi. Earl Spalding, Greg Wells, Brock Mcl etc.

No, it sounded recent - like something someone from Carton club had said or something going around on social media.

The EFC statement:-

Essendon Football Club is understandably disappointed at todays Federal Court decision.

Before deciding the next steps, we will consider the reasons for the final judgement, including whether or not to appeal this decision.

In taking these proceedings, our priority has been to protect and vindicate the legal rights and interests of the players.

The Club maintains its confidence that, on all the evidence available to us, neither harmful nor banned substances were given to the players during the supplements program of 2012.

Out of respect for the competition and the Clubs still competing this season, it is not our intention to provide any further commentary on this matter beyond today’s statement.

Edit:- Don't you love the all the evidence available to us line. Could that be because all the damning evidence has been lost or destroyed?

Next. I can't see how the AFL can avoid giving them severe sanctions for running a drug cheating regime.

Little made sure that he protected what was left of Hird's reputation by insisting in the settlement last year that it expressly said there was no suggestion of drug cheating and the sanctions were expressly only for poor governance. Can't possibly see how the AFL can avoid giving them very serious sanctions otherwise the reputation of the AFL as a sport will be more damaged than anything that is going to happen to Essendon.

This case has set another unrelated but incredibly significant precedent. The Judge referred to the fact the players had entered into binding contracts with the AFL to be investigated and give up their right to avoid self incrimination and that contractual agreement is binding. This is the first time these contracts have ever been commented on in the Courts. The significance of this is that the court is saying the Clubs and Players contractual obligations with the League are binding. These contracts include the salary cap and the draft. In the past there have been rumours of threats by Eddie No Where that if he didn't get what he wanted he would get the salary cap etc set aside for being anti competitive but the Court is saying if you sign a contract to be part of the AFL it is binding. People have often wondered what would happen if a player or Club took it to court. Well here is the answer.

That obiter dicta may have bee influenced by the introduction of free agency, it being assumed that players are not locked into endless contracts at the best of the clubs.

swans haven't forgiven carlton for the 1945 gf "bloodbath"

The game, played in extremely wet, muddy conditions, is remembered as "the Bloodbath" for its overall continuous violence (on the field and amongst the fans), and its plethora of crude king hits and brawls (many of which were broken up with the assistance of team officials and the police). The Melbourne tabloid newspaper The Truth called it "the most repugnant spectacle League football has ever known", with ten players reported for a total of sixteen offences

From bomberblitz - they seem to have a problem telling the time as well as the truth if you look at the first timestamp. Thought some of our depressives would like to see the reply that was made to this post

Just a question, with the draft coming up, what happens if someone gets picked up by us and they or their parents say, we do not want our son to be drafted to or play for Essendon. Do the AFL say, well sign the contract or go elsewhere to play footy? What happens?

Ralph declares on radio that Goodwin 100% to sign with Crows and news leaked out he ahd signed with the dees. Warner could not have been more wrong with his pathetic cricket score analogies in the case just decided. Yobbo - say no more.

Is it any wonder their only award at the Hun was an internal News corp prize - which they jointly shared with Rebecca Wilson!

Reading the judgement it's clear that Essendon has copped a comprehensive belting which begs the question were their lawyers taking them for a ride the entire time?

They don't even get close to a win.

I guess it depends. Maybe they were just trying to delay everything for as long as possible.

If that's the case, they've done pretty well.

Another few more years of delay and they won't have to worry about half their list sitting on the sidelines for months on end.

Because I am a notorious sticky-beak I set up an account on bomberblitz when this all started. So I can see into the inner sanctum.

I've rarely logged on, but did today. There is a mixture of views there ranging from Middleton J votes Labor (!) and it's all a plot to I'm sick of this, respond to ASADA and take the punishment if any. Mostly 'keep fighting' type posts.

But I've yet to see anyone calling for Little's head and a clean sweep of the club. (If it was demonland, they'd be calls for that on a

All the Dons blokes at work are shattered and wanting the entire joint cleaned out... let it not happen until they spend some more money on lawyers.

I think that must be their strategy. It is always possible that a stupid litigant will instruct his lawyers to pursue a foolish case regardless of advice, but there are surely enough people at Essendon to have intervened to stop that. So dragging things out for years might well be their strategy. Might even been seen as club bonding - us against the world etc. The AFL which doesn't want a 10 player Essendon team next year may be quite happy for this to go on for years in the background too.

But it carries risks. A few cracks could become rifts, Ryder's could abound. But maybe that is less to them and the AFL than the risk of having a decimated team in the short run.

Last financial year, ending 31st October, Essendon incurred $1,939,710 in legal and consulting expenses associated with the ASADA investigation (plus the $2,000,000 AFL imposed fine).

I'd hate to think what their bill is going to be this year, particularly if they have to pay ASADA's court costs.

Middleton J's decision.

Justice John Middletons full ruling against Essendon and James Hird in the Federal Court

Brilliantly put together and a very difficult finding to appeal against.

Of course, the Bombers won some time and will win more time in the unlikely event that they appeal but it's as damaging a defeat as you can get. An innings and 350 runs.

Then there is this one "I fail to see what impact today's outcome has on Hird coaching next year."

These costs will pale into insignificance once the 34 players eventually take Essendon to court for compensation. Failing in their duty to provide a safe workplace, loss of earnings and inability to pursue their careers, pain and suffering due to stress and pressure that the elongated denial of responsibility that Hird and Little are happy to continue and so on and so on. Where are they going to find the money? Will the afl bail them out? Only a miracle can save this club. I feel sorry for their players and supporters. Well Hirdy sit back and count your money and Little enjoy your business interests. There may be a place for a Tassy side shortly.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
