The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

I would definitely prefer Shiel. I was genuine emerging gun midfielders and my guts tells me this story came from a GWS source. I doubt we would accept this deal. Roos did say in his article that he wanted to add a defender, but we did have a midfield that Healy described as the worst he had ever seen in the AFL in 2013.

As for rumours - ill have some more tomorrow.

Considering we ranked 18th out of the middle, Healy's description wasn't the biggest of calls going around. If it was the worst going around in 2013, it would be one of the worst for at least the last decade.

One thing we possibly need to get our heads around is working to the Roos type model, not necessarily getting one star with pick 2 but with players he is confident will play roles for him, will add to the team and are solid citizens.

Some of the players he traded for at Sydney had the rest of the clubs sniggering but he backed them in and developed them into their roles perfectly.

He may see this in these two blokes, and considering we still maintain a top ten pick we shouldn't dismiss this scenario so readily.

Trading in picks for unpolished gems who no one else rates highly was a speciality for Sydney and we need to damper our expectations of getting a recognised star and swap it for trust in what Roos sees as the bigger picture, and his coaching and development abilities.

After all isn't that why we are so excited about getting him to the club ?

Not at pick 2. You don't want a role player or three for 2.

We are going to be very well placed.

Sentiment is running against young players who nominate a club which has to work in our favour on the possible deals.

It seems that Adelaide has not given up on Polec and need our pick to pull it off. Port in a rearguard action are trying to snaffle the picks that might send him to Adelaide. Keep fighting lads.

GWS desperate for pick 2 (but maybe dont really want pick 1) and offering us unders until they can convince Shiel he doesn't get to pick and choose how he returns to Melbourne.

I think this has some way to go but I am getting confident we will see some good results over the next week but it may come down to the wire until the " but i want to go to Disneyland" tantrums subside.

Could the MFC very cheekily pull off this..

GWS approached offered picks 2 20 and Jamar for pick 1. They're happy.

In the meantime, MFC on the blower to Collingwood, we take 10,11, Sidebottom for number 1.. Pies get prized possession in Boyd and we get a good midfielder and good picks.

Thinking similar, pick 2 for 6 and 10 from collingwood who could then offer pick 2 and shaw for pick 1?

We are pretty desperate for blokes who can actually kick when coming off half-back...given that we have none. Maybe Clisby...maybe. Given that half-back is where you win the ball back and we turnover the ball consistently atm, I'd think that blokes who do better might well be a priority. Not saying that we should ignore midfield, or that a better midfield won't automatically lead to less ball going in to the defensive line in the first place...but we still need someone who can defend and kick off halfback.

Another wide an unsubstantiated comment to go with the other 500 you've posted

Quote me on the 500 comments i have made then you [censored]

While staying on topic i agree with the people that say we shouldnt deal pick 20 for Vince. Id rather it towards Lyons.

Hoping the Ox is right about Shiels..

Roos' trading history appears to be that he doesn't trade to "complete the list". Rather he trades for players he sees playing in the best starting 22- 25 players. Richards, Mattner, Shaw & McGlynn were traded in and played immediately. I reckon he will do the same with us.

Vichie will start in the 22.

Whether it be Vince and Lyons from crows or Shiel/Buntine from GWS - they will be brought in to play immediately. I am not a fan of the Bugg/Buntine deal because neither of these players have excelled. We don't need better players with pick 2 - we need some great players.

If we can land Cross the same applies - he will play.

All of this is speculation of course, but our starting 22 in 2014 is going to be a huge surprise to us all.

Not since Flower... lets start this argument again.

Lyon was a superstar.. no doubt about it. If he was a player today he would be very well regarded.. Jeremy cameron is someone i look at and think he has Lyon like qualities. Great on the lead, really good below his kness, can play small, tall, defend or fwd. Cameron better overhead!

Lyon won 6 All Aus selections, 2 of them as a CHB the rest as a Fwd. He won the equivilent of the NAB rising Star in 1986 - The Norwich rising star, represented and captained Victoria, Captained our club and is widely regarded as a great captain, in what was a great era, Coached Australia, kicked bags of 70+ 2 years in a row, including 10 in a final..

make no mistake he was superstar, and one wonders what we could have been if his back held up.

Before Lyon there was Robbie.. he was an out and out superstar of the game. Cannot deny that.

Others we had that were close, Stynes, Neitz, Schwartz..

I agree, though, it is time for a A grader..

I dont like the Bugg and Buntine deal.

We've got enough defenders (Frawley, Garland, T Mac, Terlich, Clisby, Grimes, Strauss and there is always Pedersen who did improve towards the end of the season)

We need mids, and a star so its either Shiel or to the draft and get Aish.

It is widely understood that GWS don't want or need what you suggest we offer them. They don't need picks and they don't need Jamar if they're getting Mumford.

I agree I don't understand the hate for this bloke. Compared to some of our other players he is actually not that bad. He does need to lose weight but his size and marking ability is a strength of his which is quite handy.

I believe he should have been dropped after that round one game where he ducked his head. It would have sapped every ounce of confidence he had. Just shows what a terrible coach Neeld was. Like Watts after getting subbed against Essendon then getting dropped only to come back a week later after not even playing VFL footy.

Look at the way Neil Craig handled Jimmy toumpas when he was subbed against Brisbane during the 3rd qtr with 2 disposals. You could see how devastated Toumpas was. So what did Craig do? backed him in the week after and played him again. Played real well that game too.

Just shows the gap between Neeld and Craigy in terms of people management skills.

Any sorry for hijacking this thread! LoL

Can't say I agree.

The guy just doesn't have the physicality you want in a guy his size nor does he have any quality 'outside' ability. He isn't fit, isn't fast and his foot is by no means a weapon.

Plus, where exactly will he fit in next year? Sure he can fill a spot when a couple go down but in my eyes he is nothing but an emergency player with a big body.

Roos will be developing some players sure, but I can't see Pederson being one.

I think Ron's assessment that Sculldog Millionaire went up there and bagged us out as a club would probably be correct. But I also think over time the young players around him might come to see that his opinion might have been scewed just a little by the millions more he is earning over his team mates with comparable skill.

Come on Steve - Jumbo said it.

Jumbo works by opposites. He didn't rate Shiel, yet rates Bugg. :)

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
