Matt Jones - Evaluate his first 7 games

Recommended Posts

Sorry guys, thought we needed an onfield thread for a change.

What's everyone's thoughts on him so far?

I've been reasonably impressed so far. Averaging about 20 touches, seems to be a good athlete, continually provides an option, plays with a bit of heart. On the flip side he lacks class and is clearly not a goal kicking midfielder.

Overall he's been a rare good news story, but can he make the step up from average to good over the next 18 months?

He is a workman, hard running type mid, reminds me abit of Daniel cross, never going to be an out and out superstar but reliable and definately in our best 22 at this stage

He has been more successful so far than I thought he would be. He has composure and disposal skills, unlike so many other Dees and can find the ball. Good selection at around pick 50 I think.

With the exception of the kids he is IMO the best by far from 2012 draft.

Compare him to Gillies, Pedersen and Roden

He is better than all three put together.

At least he has a dip. As first year players I can handle the occasional skill error as they adapt to the speed of the game. I'd say Terlich is the same category. I don't mind mistakes when they come from players who go and get the footy and are still adjusting to the pace.

Both of these blokes are good picks by the MFC (can't believe I just typed that sentence).

No complaints with Matty Jones, doing very well, better than most of his mates out there. He has a go.

But its his 1st season, next year, they'll try to turn into a running back pocket. He'll be howled down as a next biggest spud.

(sorry sarcasm)

When drafted I shook my head, as Jack Hannath went west. Both would have been ideal, But M.Jones has been a decent pickup.

He doesn't have elite finishing skills but he works bloody hard and finds a lot of the footy. Really like this guy and hope he continues to develop.

You can add Byrnes to that group.

He is on my TV screen more than any other player, meaning he must run his guts out. Lacks polish at the moment, but that may come with experience and he's improved significantly already. Overall I reckon he's been a great low cost midfield option - certainly players like this look a better option than a Weetra, McNamara type speculative young player.

Hah, Isaac Weetra! I'd forgotten about him. Wonder where he's playing these days..

I think Jones has been good, but not exceptional. He's like a poor man's Micheal Barlow? (maybe a bit harsh?) I think recruiting players in their early-mid 20's will come into vouge even more so than what we are seeing currently. The game is played at such a high pace and intensity that for draft picks to come in and have an impact straight away in their 1st year they need to have mature bodies.

It wouldnt suprise me to see them up the draft age in the coming year and maybe even have a nation wide u19 comp

He's a solid consistent B-grade midfielder. He does his job week in week out and we know we can rely on him with the ball in his hands. Hes a pretty good kick, a good runner and gives a contest. If he had a bit more pace and some x-factor with his skills he could be a potential A-grader, but as it is I think he is a very useful, consistent and solid performer without being a star. Happy to have him in the side.

Matt Jones has been great, good to see someone with a bit of work ethic running hard for us.

I think we should look at getting more mature age recruits out of the comps around Australia.

They are perfect picks for later in the draft an we should be looking at more of them along with our youn stars early in the draft.

Been even better than Magner in his first year.

I really like the look of him..

Seems to find the footy quite easily and past couple of weeks he has posted some high disposal counts.

Looks like someone who could fit quite nicely with N. Jones, Grimes, Trengove, Viney and Toump in future years.

Hopefully he turns into a leader in the midfield

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
