The second game of the NAB Cup campaign v Port Adelaide promises to be a hot one with temperatures in the low 30's predicted for the picturesque Murray River town of Renmark, just a two hour drive away from Mildura.

The squad should be announced some time today or tomorrow.

I'm hoping for no injuries, not really worried about the result unless we get flogged, don't show them everything prior to round 1.

Will be interesting to see the squad, hoping Strauss is fit.

I read earlier that we're taking a young team over, so won't be too concerned about the result.

Unlike last year, when we took a full strength side to play Port in the final pre-season game, and duly got flogged by 8 goals.

I'd love to see a win or two before the season proper starts. I'm a big beleiver in going into the start of the season with some momentum. Something we haven't done in probably a decade.

The game against Port in Renmark doesn't mean much to me because it is still too far away from the season proper, is played in belting heat, and the newbies, young'ns, and rookies will make up the majority of the team. We will get better measures of foot skills, sure hands, playing to instruction etc... but I can't see the game being used to assess whether we can actually win.

The NAB cup round 3 game will be more important as we see which players are being genuinely considered and which players have already cemented a spot.

Hope the kids give a good shake.

They are only kids rpfc a number have yet to play a real AFL game.

Not expecting a lot but it will depend on how serious Port are about winning.

I suspect they need to win badly in their situation.

If so I think we will be lucky to keep the loss under 5 goals.

Frankly I would rather see the attitude with Port trying to keep their loss to us under 5 goals!

I am far from convinced we are taking this seriously

And as I think we saw last week when we take out a few of the better players we still struggle.

We are still short of having a good list.

Port beat us twice last year I have seen little to suggest the relative lists have changed enough to expect a reveresal

Lets see the teams before get over excited

Not having a go OD, but just curious as to why you think Port would "need to win badly" and not us? I would see a win being equally as important to both teams and so we can maybe expect to see a real contest.

Happened to run into him the other day and both him and Fitzpatrick were both told they wouldn't play Round 1 of the NAB purely for load purposes, James mentioned he had pulled up sore earlier in the week so that's what the club decided. Both should play this weekend.

My team for this week

Strauss Davis Sellar

Dunn Gillies MacDonald

Taggart M Jones Tynon

Kent Pederson Tapscott

Davey Fitzpatrick Barry

Spencer Magner Couch

Clisby, Stark, McKenzie, Nicholson, Evans, Terlich

I don't care about this game, protect the players that should be playing round one, give some fringe players a chance to stake their claim. Week 3 and 4 go in full strength.

Have as many go's as you like hardtack.

My reasoning is they have big debts, falling membership, falling attendances and desperate need under a new Coach and Chairman to get the season off to a good start as early as possible.

While I think the MFC need a good start for a number of equally as good reasons I am confident the MFC / FD do not agree.

I think we will see a lot when the teams are announced.

I expect Port to name as strong a squad as possible.

I expect us to name a squad with a far greater number of new / untried AFL players .

I am keen to see the sides

While I don't disagree about our priorities for this game, this bit sounds a bit familiar doesn't it...

Yes it does!

but I think this weekend the difference is they have as better list than the one we have available.

Not sure how we are getting to Renmark but it must be a lot harder than a 250 km bus ride from Adelaide.

Seems the odds are stacked against us.

FB: Strauss Gillies Nicholson

HB: Watts Sellar Jetta

C: Toumpas Magner M Jones

HF: Taggart Hogan. Tapscott

FF: Davey. Pedersen. Fitzpatrick

Foll: Spencer. Couch. Viney

Int: terlich. Davis. Kent Barry macdonald Evans

Rest frawley, garland, Dunn, mcdonald, jones, mckenzie, Sylvia, Byrnes, jamar, Dawes, Howe, grimes. I'd only play Viney and Toumpas for limited minutes to get some experience at the afl level as well.

Really the aim of this game should be to find out who we can put in the team the next 2 weeks to push for a round 1 spot. There are guys in direct competition for small defender, midfield and forward spots

God I hope the side is a bit better than that one.

That side is cannon fodder.

Practise game or not I don't want a ten goal loss.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
