While tonite was positive for our young players it was the likes of nervous Nellie Garland who again slaughtered the pill. He does it too often for a player who has been in the system for years.

For Christ sake Colin - sharpen up this year and play some consistent good football.

They wont be beating the door down if he doesn't lift his game.

He is capable of playing good footy but it's been a while.

He had a few friends...

I am willing to cut some slack in the NAB Cup.

But poor decision making is tolerated only for so long.

Garland, Frawley, Nicholson, Magner, Couch, Jones, Viney, and a few more, also sprayed the footy.

I've noticed in all nab cup games that skills are down across the board. Don't beat yourself up about a pre season game. He was pivotal in beating the bombers in a real game. I'll give him some slack.

Posted

He looks like he's put on some muscle over the Summer, but his kicking still needs a lot of work. He just looks so lacsadaisical; and if Travis Johnston couldn't get by on lacsadaisical kicking, then Col Garland surely can't.

I've probably been Garland's biggest critic, but I'd be very happy for him to pick it up this year.

Colin has gone backwards under this new Football Dept!!! I could name many mates in this same category.

Who is to blame?

No need to answer, I have my own opinion

Make or break season for Garland. I've been willing to cut him (and Frawley) slack over the past few years as the ball has been pumped in there so many times under no pressure from our midfield, but it's time for him to step up. I wish he and Frawley would stop trying to be link-up men and create play and would leave that to the ones that can kick. Stop sitting in the back pocket for the quick kick-in Colin!

Sadly I think these two might have been infected by the Bailey era and don't defend like their lives depend on it.

Like McKenzie though the coaches adore him, seem to turn a blind eye to his kicking and he'll be in the leadership group again next year.

When all we had was the tanking thread, many were crying out for the footy to start. Now the footy's started, I just wish we could go back to the tanking thread.

Exactly how many goals did Garlands opponent kick?

Serious question? I have no idea!

Exactly.

You have no idea how many goals his opponents kicked, but you're happy to write him off.

Is it a worry that they have picked him in the leadership group?

Wouldn't look good if he were playing down at Casey.

Defensively he is fine unless he goes 3rd man up when he isn't needed. But he makes brain fades by hand and foot too often. It's upsetting. He should benefit from the long down the boundary or safe switch form of kicking but he doesn't do it.

He is one of those players whose mistakes are monumental, rather than many little ones. The passage of play where he gave the ball away cheaply across half back, gave away a free, and then a 50 all within 20 seconds was a perfect example. Probably my most frustrating player on the list.

Tynan and Davis are also options down back. I like Col and he's shown he can play some really good footy for us.

Some good signs last night.

Holy $hit are you serious?

Two mickey mouse games into the year and it's started

You seriously think that Garland, Frawley and McKenzie would be playing and on the list if they were not doing what they were instructed to by the coach? If Garland is in the back pocket as the short option then it's because Rawlings and the coaches want a player there. Barely any of our kick-ins used the option short I noticed, but all clubs put a player there as a last resort if the longer kick is not an option. Rather than bagging Garland and his positioning, why not actually make a comment that Watts and Dunn actually were good in this role of kicking out. First time for a while I wasn't so nervous about the ball coming immediately back in from a poor kick out.

These players by now would have no illusions of how Neeld wants them to play, and if the coaching staff felt that they were not buying into his coaching style and game plan then they would not playing.

It's a really poor comment, and to be honest it's just a cop out to use that for an excuse to slag off our players.

BTW I don't think Col played great last night, but he the best Col we had playing...

His mistakes are noticeable, but he also has games like the essendon one when the successes are noticeable too.

I think I'd prefer him on half forward than half back personally, but Joel Mac didn't have a great game in the second half, and no Strauss either meant that he played defense.

(On that note, Sellar up forward doesn't excite me either, would rather Garland with Sellar back, but thats just my opinion)

Definitely agree re Sellar. We have enough big bodies who can create a contest up forward. Anytime Sellar has looked good enough it has been as a defender.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

    TRAINING: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
