The AFL season kicks off on February 8 with Richmond taking on the AFL Indigenous All Stars in Alice Springs.

I'm not sure when the squad gets named but, based on pre season training reports, we should be represented by Aaron Davey and Neville Jetta would be a chance as well.

The last of these games scheduled in Alice Springs two years had to be cancelled because of wild storms.

It's a great way to start a season and given our connection with the Northern Territory, hopefully Melbourne gets the game next time it's planned.

Meanwhile, a team of indigenous youngsters is in South Africa promoting the game over there - Flying Boomerangs

Is Jurrah eligible to play (even though he is not on any list)?

Having seen Neville Jetta at today's training, I have a feeling he might be ready to take a big step forward. I don't think he's had a proper preseason since perhaps his first at the club and IMO a run in a game such as this could start him off on a good footing and give him some confidence after all of those injury setbacks in recent years.

Any news on the squad?

Are we releasing any of our guys to play in the match? Is it on ABC again this year?

Buddy Franklin named captain, good signs for him, seems like he is maturing into a leader...

Cheers.

This has just a wee bit more interest than State football for me.

I hope there are no Dees involved

It is just another chance for players to get injured.

Anyone care to select an Indigenous All Star team?

A Dockerland poster came up with this one:

Backs Dempsey Johnson Burgoyne

Half backs Pearce Lovett-Murray Yarran

Centreline S Hill Lewis Jetta Wells

Half forwards Goodes Ryder Varcoe

Forwards Betts Franklin Krakouer

Followers Griffin Rioli H Bennell

Interchange Wingard Wellingham, Harbrow Motlop

He also gave apologies to the following, so we'll include them as emergencies:

Johncock, Leroy Jetta, Andrew Walker, Aaron and Alwyn Davey & J Hill.

It's a fair side but of course, there will no doubt be quite a few injured or otherwise unavailable which might give someone like Nev Jetta his chance to appear on the big early stage.

Glad to see Aaron Davey and Neville Jetta named in the Indigenous All Stars squad to take on the Tigers. Could give us a chance to sneak an early look into Davey's resurrection and reports Jetta has been looking much improved and ready to step up in 2013.

Does anyone know if this means they are definitely playing?

Only a guess, but as it's only a squad I would imagine that it's not definite that they will play.

Surprised D-Rod didn't get the nod. Hopefully Aaron has a good game and gets some confidence out of it, really want to see I'm finish on a high.

Maybe because he's not aboriginal

Picked with NilNat in the Fijian all-star squad.

That would be a little unfair. 2 vs 22. Although with Nic Nat in the side, I'll be RangeRover would be betting his house on a Fiji victory.

It's an interesting squad but it has a lot of players missing from what would be the best possible squad if all players were fit and available. I'm very hopeful that our two squad members both get a game.

Essendon should be congratulated for their support of this concept.

I'm aware of the possibility of injury but that could happen any time. I'd rather out blokes get some confidence boosting early form under their belts rather than worrying about taking risks with injuries.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
