Agree 100% too big a price to pay, they have no cap room and they are looking to trade so we should drive the deal not them. They have effectively made Dawes redundant and they can't afford to keep Wellingham, it's important that we don't roll over on this we have pick 13 and some later picks but pick 4 should be off the table.

I'm with you, RobbieF. Pick 4 in a good draft is extremely valuable and we shouldn't blow it on serviceable players. Draft the A-grade midfield stud that we desperately need and for heaven's sake, make sure he develops properly!

Listen boys and girls, in order to get a handle on filth supporter's unashamed glee at the prospect of off-loading Dawes plus ho hum for Wellingham - have a listen to the radio or if you dare (as I do not) check out a filth forum - just what the doctor ordered.

Under no circumstances should we entertain a top 20 pick for either or both of them.

I'll be the first to admit, they could add to our side, but they are B & C grade.

Give them Martin and a second rounder (20s pick). They need to offload them more than we need them when considering what we could snag with pick 4 and 13. Would rather Toumpas/Wines/O'Rourke/McCrae then Kennedy/Garlett/Stringer.

WTF? That's a bit random considering I haven't posted on the last few pages of this thread - neither I assure you (don't even know who "bubsy" is?) I used to post under Demonic Ascent which is also my name on Big Footy if you must know.

Pick 4 for Dawes and Wellingham would be a massive fail for MFC and if they did this I don't know if I can be bothered wasting more time and money on the club until they can show they're serious. I doubt they would be this stupid but you never know.

We could get a seriously good player for pick 13/14. Think David Mundy, Grant Birchall, Jack Riewoldt, Jack Grimes, Harry Taylor, Luke Shuey, Sam Blease, David Zaharakis, Lewis Jetta, Nat Fyfe, Shaun Atley. That is the calibre of player usually available in that range. I know that for every one of these players there's a dud, but we should back ourselves to pick someone of quality. All of the above players are better than Wellingham and Dawes. Cumulatively, they may be better, but you don't trade a Nat Fyfe for a Wellingham and Dawes, so why trade pick 13/14? It's still a bloody high pick. I'm sure Hawthorn will be confident of picking up a great player with pick 21 or whatever they'll have. I won't be happy if we trade the pick.

Agree, with the strength of this draft in the top 20 I would't be handing anything over in that range. I would expect that players the calibre of Membrey, Graham, MacRae or Stringer could still be around at our pick 13 or 14.

Pick 4 is way too high for both of them together, even if they package the pies' first round pick as well. I would hesitate to give pick 13 for the pair of them. As I have said before, I don't rate Dawes in any way shape or form. Listening to SEN today, they were hesitant to rate him as a third round pick, and I would go along with that notion. More likely 4th. I will be furious if our club is insane enough to throw away one of our prized top ten picks on a forward who is too small to play tall and too slow to play mobile. His currency right now has to be at an all-time low. If someone at the club seems to think he would be of benefit, offer up our third round pick. Even then we'd be paying too much, but better than giving up a top 20 on the guy.

As for Wellingham, why would we want him? Neeld has been preaching his manta of tough, accountable workhorse-style players and then we go and make a play for a soft outside mid who is considered expendable by his old club. We already have players who can play that role and Neeld seems hell-bent on getting rid of them.

Seriously, I am a big fan of Mark Neeld, but he needs to get it through his head that he doesn't work for Collingwood any more and his job is to get us to a flag, not help them to their next one.

If there is indeed some mutual interest in Wellingham and Dawes to Melbourne, I'd say this will be stretched out to October 26 while the Pies ask for pick 4 and we offer pick 14 + stuff. While I'll happily have these two in our team next year, we can't part with pick 4 for them. Unless we're insane, we'll keep pick 4 off the table, and there should become chance Collingwood will relent and accept 14 and something useful given their salary cap squeeze. They have a great recent history of getting the best out of their players, and Wellingham is easily replaced and they've pretty much already replaced Dawes.

But again, I'm bracing for another 23 days of this.

I think we should wait til Tippett is gone to Suns. then deal.

Well i really can't see the deal happening if we don't offer a pick around that mark. Wellingham would be worth getting as he would add a bit of class, and dawes on his day is still a good marking forward who is accurate infront of goals. I really think it would be worthwhile us going for them, but if it does fall through we are placed really well to make a killing in this years draft

Funny, Once upon a time I liked Dawes, but now I see him as the very embodiment of a NQR player. He's not tall enough to play as a tall marking target. He's not quick enough to play as a mobile forward. He's not strong enough to play as a gorilla. His kicking is adequate but not great. His stats are mediocre. He's just not what we need.

I hate this 'splitting of centimeters'. Dawes is 193cm and you say he isn't tall enough to play as a marking target. Fev was 191. Pav is 192. Petrie is 193. Reiwoldt is 193. There are plenty more examples of this. A few centimeters here or there mean nothing. As well as that, Dawes is strong as they come and at 105kg has a fair amount of weight to throw around. Sure he might not be the most athletic bloke, but if he can split the pack and drop the ball to whoever is waiting at the front of the pack (saying that I hope we can pick up one or two small forwards), he is a hell of a lot more than what we have at the moment.

Dawes is no Fev, Pav, Petrie or Roo he is a second string forward, now third string, in the side and has had one really good year. His form this year has been terrible and he would have been dropped earlier if it wasn't for the fact they needed to get him in to some form and for the structure of their forward line.

Remember Benny Holland; he was given a huge contract by the tigers based on one year's good football and after that he was just ordinary, so much so they traded him to us as we were the only mugs who would take him. Benny was a great guy good clubman tall strong but he just wasn't really any good; wonder if Dawes will turn out to be Bennyx2?
