Jack is exactly what we need over the next few years (and beyond) - hard at the contest, strong bodied, great endurance, good developing skills and leadership potential.

Why the hell would we risk that on some sort of bluff calling game? Let's get real.

We WILL take him with our first pick if another club below us bids. Plain and simple.

If we 2nd last and GWS nominate Viney then we will need to decide between the 2

If we finish last, we can have both......

Not sure if we need him, but we are sure as hell going to sign him, regardless of how the cards may fall.

Viney is just another guy on the end of the shovel.

What we really need is about three wheelbarrows, players that can receive from Jones, Mckenzie,Viney and the other battlers.

Players that can run and carry with pace, mark overhead, hit the scoreboard, hit targets with both feet, from a distance, a bit of midfield height would be helpful as well.

When lamenting our woes my Brother recently asked me, "When was the last gun midfielder we had ?". I said, "It would have to be Todd Viney, who made our Team of the Century". He replied, "FFS, we're just about to draft his Son". "Yes, it's been a while".

I note that some are saying that we call the other minnows bluff. How about we just accept that we're going to draft a very highly rated progeny that may just be the best mid we've had in a while ? Lord knows he won't go astray.

Didn't Woey win a brownlow?

Yeah, so what ?

In my opinion, he was a gun in our midfield in that year. He won the league B&F.

That's what.

He played about 75 decent games and was a battler by the time he was 27.

Setting the "gun" bar that low is part of the reason we've been wading in mediocrity for 3 generations.

Maybe we should all lower our expectations then. :)

One year, though. It'd be nice to have a midfielder that was "a gun", rather than "a gun once".

Todd was a really good player, but he wasn't "a gun". He was on the cusp of B grade and A grade. Hard at it, yes. Leader? Absolutely. But his kicking would often let him down, which prevented him from being a star. I'd go as far as saying we haven't had a gun mid in my life-time (I'm 25 and wasn't old enough to see Robbie Flower play). If Jack's kicking is any better than his dad's, he might go the distance.

I tend to agree with you Adam, but considering he won two B&F's, made All Australian, and was named in Melbourne's Team of the Century, which had access to a dozen premiership teams I was happy to give him the nod. But I wouldn't argue against those that say he falls short, as I have some sympathy with that view.

Yeah, terrific CV. A premiership would have helped his cause. Loved him as a player though, except his kicking. :P

I reckon Todd's kicking improved a lot as his career went on

The last 'gun' mid we had was Travis Johnstone. Regardless of his fading in and out of games he was amazing, and was one who I used to come to the footy to watch as a 7/8/9/10 year old. He was a true gun but was lazy, if he had the work ethic he cudda become one of the greats of the club.....but we all know what happened here.

Woey wasn't really a gun. Even though he won a Brownlow he is much like Adam Cooney...HOW???

Viney has all of the attributes and with the potential talent in this draft pool looks like, if we get it right (TOUCH WOOD), we will have multiple 'gun' mids!

Trapper's best was as good as you'll ever see.

When he was on, he was on. A rare occurrence unfortunately.

Not sure why people are worrying about Jack, he's a definite upgrade on McKenzie and these types.

Travis Johnstone is still unarguably the best midfielder to play for our club in my lifetime. He's underrated by Melbourne supporters who are bitter he didn't live up to what they hoped for, but also shows the lack of superstars we've had at the club in the last few decades.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
