  1. I find the fact we have to travel from Perth to another away game, with only an 83 day break disgusting.

  3. Oi! Let's not waste energy on a discussion of all the theoretical ways me might lose. I'd rather focus on the thought of a positive demonstration of the "Melbourne style of play" and a thumping win. Even if this is the definition of insanity. I'll only start using up negative energy slitting my wrists if we actually lose.

  6. Hi Mr Shadow back after a length illness that is still not fixed, have had no interest in sport last few months however life goes on and I come on to Demonland and the second thing I see is the subject of a home ground. Your comments are spot on! I have no problem with the MFC being head quartered at Casey but it will never happen. The board has said on a number of occasions that the facility has be near the G that leaves one option the Goschs paddock area. IMO the plan would have been announced by now if not for the Virus. The state government is not going to be seen giving money to a silver tails football club in this envoirnment. IMO unless we can fund it ourselves the tradition will continue. Forget about us having a new home for the rest of this decade the funds just won't be available. Collingwood won a flag using Goschs we can too it is not ideal but there is no other alternative while the facility has to be close to the G!

  8. So they steal Scully, Ward, Davis etc then complain when it comes back to other clubs looking at GWS Talent. Sheedy = A grade tool And GWS gets a recruiting zone. So it’s already imbalance towards them

  9. If you go by R1 performances O Mac definitely warrants selection. The problem was up the other end of the field. The only way O Mac misses selection depends on the match ups. Looking at Carlton’s injuries on another thread I can’t tell you which other tall forwards they have available apart from Casboult.

  14. Actually pretty happy with this draw. Blues first up will be a good litmus test as to how this season will go, but with our Marvel record and them missing some key targets up forward, even a neutral would expect a win for Melbourne. Essendon at the G is another good test against a team that is probably around our level. They were very patchy against Freo, so again I'd probably lean towards a win here. Cats at the G is the best possible scenario really to play them. I'd really love to see us get the win to atone for our woeful round 2 performance last year. This is a 50-50. Swans at the SCG. We play smaller grounds quite well and without the pro Swans crowd in attendance as well as beating them there last year when we were terrible leads me to expect a win here. 4-1 would be great, however 3-2 is a reasonable expectation for even the most balanced Dees supporter.

  17. Sadly I have to agree Mr. Leg. To me going to the footy is 80% of the enjoyment. Not sure how I will adapt with only 20% to work with. The up side is in early June we are still in the running for a finals berth. How often does that happen?

  18. The 3:30 Sunday time slot would have to be the fourth best time slot of the week outside of Thursday, Friday or Saturday night given it's the only other game on free to air. Not a bad result from a TV point of view with 3 out of 4 games on free to air.

  19. Glad there are no crowds allowed. We play in the Sunday arvo death slot 3 times, but it is made for tv!

  21. No.24 1991 Round 20 v North Melbourne at MCG This match ultimately saw the Phoenix of Allen Jakovich rise. It was an amazing day that saw the Dees have a player with such charisma arrive once the football scene. The background to the match is worth noting. We had been stung by a 20-game loss to the Kangas in 1990 yet recover the make finals and almost go all the way. Then we played them and got revenge through a 10-goal win in round 5 1991. So we were confident but were battling it out with North to make the finals (Dees in 7th place on 10 wins 8 losses and Kangas in 4th place in 11 wins 5 losses). North had just beaten the top of the table Eagles and had young gun forwards in Carey and Longmire. A loss here would probably make it very tough to make the final 6. The Dees opened on fire but inaccurate kicking for goal was proving costly. Jakovich has kicked all our goals (6) but we were behind 8.4 to 6.12. North’s full back Mick Martyn was unable to stop Jako who 6.4 up to half time. Longmire also was proving hard to match as Dees defender Paul Bryce struggled for pace. The third quarter was the story of the day. The Dees finally got on top with a 10-goal quarter. It was highlighted by Jakovich’s soccer style goal over his head from 15 metres out. We were in shock. We knew he was a talent. But that was ridiculous. By 3/4 time, Jakovich had 10 goals. Goal number 10 coming with a tight angle banana kick on the boundary line after the season. North were in disarray as Sholl and Brayshaw were tried on him. The Dees had marched to a 38 point lead. Through the amazing work of Stynes both in the ruck and around the ground, the midfield of Obst, Dyson, Stretch and Steven Clark has now got on top and were giving our forwards good supply. The last quarter saw us calling for more Jako goals. But instead he nearly exploded. A very very soft free kick was awarded against him and he let the ump know. Unfortunately despite a warning his temper and his mouth (and the Dees runner trying to stop him) led to a report for abusive language. Jako missed a few chances but finally got goal 11 and our 20th goal. We won by 52 points and our season was alive. Stynes and Jakovich were clearly our best, but Peter Rohde’s job to shutdown Carey also was very crucial to the victory. We enjoyed the win but couldn’t stop talking about the soccer scissor goal. Surely goal of the year was the common talking point. Jako had the spotlight and we had a new star in the team. Melbourne 20.20.140 defeated North Melbourne 13.10.88

  23. I don’t agree that Bedford can’t be considered for selection. I hope he is named. He and Kozzy running around our forward line is a sight I would like to see regularly this season.

  29. Bit of bullishness on this thread today . . . quick question . . . who's going to kick our goals?
    2 points
  30. I haven't seen Sheedy's article, so I won't comment on what he said, but wasn't GWS established deliberately with a larger number of players which required them to "lose" some over time via trading, retirements and free agency? If so, the model effectively invited clubs to pursue GWS's excess players.

  31. Dee 56 not sure your logic is correct. Omac does not fill in for Lever! Omac takes a key possie and plays totally on that player ie WC Darling or Kennedy and Lever plays his own game intercepting What does happen Sometime is that our defence pushes up and Omac is left minding the oppositions nearest goal forward on his own with no teammate nearby to help (each other) Hore is not a bad player BUT he is not strong enough for the monsters or quick enough for the speedsters. He in fact is an interceptor like Lever and I don't think we can carry two of that style in defence. Also neither Hibbo or Nev really did anything to suggest they are back to their best ( or even near) in Round1. I believe Rivers and Lockhart should be not far away from getting their real chances to shine and stay in the team. Lets see but plenty of room for improvement. May Lockhart and Oscar were easily our 3 best in Round1. Harmed was lost mostly get him on the ball or forward or maybe a wing. I also believe Tomlinson May end up being our third tall some times As I am still not convinced ring is his best position fir us. Go Dees

  32. I stand by my opinion. We’re likely to lose. However will be happy if we suddenly change our game plan and ability to hit targets in the forward fifty and to run back and man up in defence and WIN!

  34. Great winnable draw. Very happy to avoid Richmond, Collingwood and GWS. Could be a great chance to get the season off to a good start (well re-start, lets ignore Round 1). Sunday afternoon is a good time slot for TV. Especially now the weather is mostly awful, and we are still living with restrictions. And to have 3 of our 4 games on FTA is a win. Saints get none!

  39. I can see why you chose your screen name... are you talking about the coach who got us to a preliminary final in his first full season? Sure they failed miserably last year, but I'd be holding off on the crucifixion a little longer; and the first game of this year was lost in the first quarter after which they adjusted but were not good enough to overhaul what they had already given away. And have you noticed that the new "improved" Carlton have a rather extensive injury list that includes two of their main forward targets, while we are pretty much at full strength (something we were nowhere near in the first round).

  41. Mark Stevens confirmed that Bennell won't play round 2 but may come-back in the early rounds. Spargo, Brown and Bedford can't be considered for selection. The first 2 were woeful while the latter had no impact as a rookie. Jetta was slaughtered by West Coast's small forwards but will be given an opportunity to make amends. Salem and Jones are obvious ins while Smith or Petty could be considered as a third key forward, with Weideman taking the #2 role replacing Brown.

  42. i'm not a huge fan but his round 1 form was reasonable and i think it all depends on match ups. He is not bad against the big, not so mobile key forwards. Time will tell.
