When the weather is awful in the UK? It was one game, Langdon wouldn't have made a difference to whether we won or lost. Ed has played 17, 24, 23, 25 games since coming to the Dees. He is possibly the most no-fuss player on the list. Turns up almost every week, runs his butt off, then you never hear about him off-field. Yes he is paid well to play AFL footy but it was one game. His sister shouldn't have to work her life around him.

Last night's game was yet another example of what i'm talking about above. The dogs had a whopping 16 center clearances last night, twice as many as the Swans who could only manage 8. The Swans were plus 3 for around the ground stoppages, meaning the dogs were +5 for total clearances Six years ago if a team had 16 center clearances and their opponent only 8, that would be the ball game. But as is often the case now, the dogs center square domination was not a decisive factor in the game. They scored 6.6.42 from stoppages (in total, ie centre and around the ground combined) to the swans' 5.2.32. Like so many games now, the decisive factor was scores from turnover, with the dogs scoring 6.10.46 from turnovers and the Swans 11.2.68. On turnovers, there is no doubt the dogs inaccuracy hurt them, they had 16 to 13 turnover scores after all. But an interesting factor to consider, particularly as it relates to the discussion about us changing our game plan, is that the dogs dominated inside 50s, particularly in the last quarter, winning inside 50s 60-48. I think there is enough evidence now to suggest the time in forward half model, high inside 50 numbers with lots of reentries into a crowded forward line (ie our 2021-23 game plan) contributes to inaccuracy. The other interesting stat from last nights game, also relevant to the midfield discussion (given the key role mids play in terms of winning contested possessions), is the dogs smashed the swans for contested possessions 138 to 105.

Perhaps it's just part of being a fan, but it seems many dees fans, for all manner of things, don't apply the same logic to the dees as they do to other clubs. Flags are hard to win. Yes we won a flag under goody, but somehow one flag in 7 season for us is a fail. We are consistently a contender and give ourselves a chance to win a flag. Underachieved. The cats and swans are a well run clubs that are always in the frame. Wouldn't it be be great to be a fan of those clubs. Other contenders get beaten when favorites, a blip. We get beaten as favorites and it's time to rebuild and 'play the kids'. Other teams struggle for a block of time but they have key players out injured. We have a rough patch for the same reason and we lack depth. And on, and on and on.

Also looks like Jefferson still needs to get his running levels up to the mark. He’s had quarters or halves of footy where you see the talent that made him a first round prospect, but then goes missing. A lot of it looks like he doesn’t quite have the tank to run and present repeatedly for an extended period of time. That’s going to be a problem at AFL level if he gets promoted now. Maybe a late season game or two if we can afford to give him a taste, but I reckon he needs at least one more preseason to get ready. I also get that the Giants have gone a different route with Cadman in playing him regularly and early, but he was more developed physically than Jefferson when drafted and their forward line can better accommodate him (as Cadman develops) at the moment as well.

As I recall JVR was named in the 25 a couple of times late 2022; some were calling for him to debut but the FD wisely held him back. And he went on to have an really excellent debut year 2023.

You know what Collingwood do well. Sticking their tackles. They rarely miss. The scary thing is they have so many good players out but are still winning. It makes you sick.

You'd have to imagine we would identify our lack of midfield depth and look to address that, i am sure if the club knew Gus would be forced to retire we may have retained Harmes, or fought harder to keep Jordan, the outcome ultimately is that we lose 3 AFL level mids from our depth and look a bit thin behind the big names. Unsure who specifically we might target but i'd guess we will at the very least be looking at the available mature age midfielders

I also like it. I’m impressed with how comprehensive it is. Geelong are last on the mullet ladder. They’d be on top of the headband ladder though. This calls for a Headband article!

The Howes blunder with Reid (whilst understandable given Reid's talent) was extremely poor defending. There would have been a few other contests that I can't recall but where the selection committee decided he needs a freshening up

The irony meter is getting a big work out. As you suggest TU Demomnland has been clogged up for the last 2 seasons with cries to change our ugly, forward half game plan. Now we have, and people are pining for the old game plan. I don't think we are using the current method just to preserve bodies/fitness until later in the year, though i have no doubt that is a huge driver. Probably the biggest. As i noted in the saints pregame thread i think we will largely revert to 'our' tried and true method, but hopefully retain some of the elements of our current method, eg hitting some high risk corridor kicks, using the lions style 20 metre forward kicks on the 45, and some run and dare off the hb. Those elements are important I think in terms of reducing the frequency of reentries back into a crazy crowded inside 50 (which had historically been a big driver of our low score to inside 50 ratio - or inefficiency as it is oft described). On that point i 100% agree with @MurDoc516 and you that the way we played in 2022-23 contributed to the inaccuracy we had in finals. I think they need to redefine their mullet criteria. According to them, MFC has 6 mullets: Jack Viney, Jake Lever, Tom Sparrow, Tom Fullarton, Kynon Brown and the Kolt. In my book, you can cross out Jack Viney and Tom Sparrow from the outset - they're not mullets! There's also a technical issue in that Fullarton and Brown grow their hair longer to soften the wingnut effect- also not mullets! That leaves Tholstrup and Lever. In my expert opinion, Tholstrup is the genuine article and Lever has a mini-mullet!

It just so happens I spoke to uncle Colin about this. He thinks we need to get back to our tried and trusted contested game plan, tell max to tap it our players rather than theirs and work on mid forward connection. sound advice I reckon

Adam Tomlinson must have run over Goody’s cat or something left out in the Casey Doldrums. Has kept his head up and has regularly been listed in the best players there this season. With Jake Lever in recovery for a block of games he would be in the frame for a call up you’d think. Though his role would be more as a sweeper than as an interceptor. Lachie Hunter’s halcyon days are well behind him. Defensively he adds a battle hardened body, although his ability to find separation and hurt offensively have declined. Due to losing a yard or two of pace and his kicking has struggled to get over a jam tin at times. But he’s not home alone there.
