  1. Aaron Naughton wants to come to us??

  2. My concern I have with the whole Grundy saga is what draft capital we have to give up? Jay Clark on triple M stated that the two first rounders we'll get from Freo which he thinks we'll be in the teens, one we'll go to Collingwood for Collingwood. If this is the case then we're making a huge mistake giving away a first round pick for a ruckman who's going to be 29 next year.

  3. However, clubs have the option of contesting a Tribunal decision at the Appeals Board so long as they meet one of four stipulations: Error of law That the decision was so unreasonable that no Tribunal acting reasonably could have come to the decision having regard to the evidence before it. Classification of offense manifestly excessive or inadequate. Sanction imposed manifestly excessive or inadequate. Club believes it is privileged and has rights above others Club believes its season is f--ked if its player does not get off.

  4. IF we want Grundy I would be offering about $600k per year, with Pies to pay the rest and receive around pick 50. If they don't like it Grundy can say he is staying. Step 1 is to get Grundy onside and to say he will only go to the Dees or stay a Pie. Then we do the negotiating. I would never give the Pies a round one pick for him, nor would I accept two lowly round one picks for Jackson. That would be absolutely ridiculous, for trading a 20 year old potential champion, premiership player and former pick 3.

  5. Perhaps a bit more detail in the topic title might include something about 'media reports'. Just because it's not in the media, it doesn't mean conversations aren't occurring.

  6. It’s obvious that the meeting took place. I think what needs to be taken into consideration here is that Brodie has a very healthy long term contract - so why would he go to a meeting for a new job? This isn’t about a manager trying to increase his value. He’s clearly been told to look around by Collingwood so they can free up money. I’d say it’s on. Brodie wouldn’t fit in at Geelong. He’s a city kid. I’ve seen him sitting at games with his top knot, round glasses and cardigan. All he needs is a cheeseboard.

  7. Amon is exactly what we need, Jordan is a really good role player on the wing, but i actually think we're missing his hands inside, and Amons speed and kicking combination is something we really lack.

  8. Luke Jackson is getting talked down a fair bit and not surprising because he's leaving and that hurts. The work he does with ground balls is totally amazing for someone who can also ruck and mark capably. He's only 20, he'll be unstoppable when he fully matures. I can fully understand Freo's big interest.

  9. For me we shouldn't be giving up a first round pick for a 29 year old ruckman. Regardless of who pays how much portion of the salary. That's just silly, especially coming off some significant injury concerns.

  10. Should increase the suspension an extra week for wasting everyone’s time and money. He carelessly bumped and knocked a bloke out who’s now missing two weeks. His suspension is lenient if anything.

  11. Don't quite understand the whole let's get a player who just announced his retirement thing. There where some calling for Kennedy yesterday. These guys are old with shot bodies and retiring for a reason

  12. Well then no deal. This is a salary dump so the pies will have to take a second or third rounder. They have little leverage here. Take lower picks or eat his salary for the next 5 years

  13. I would have thought the ruck situation is less of an issue if we get someone like Meek from Freo as part of the Jackson trade (if it were to go ahead). He would be behind Jackson and Darcy - arguably the two best rucks under 25 in the game. Sure if we can get Grundy cheaply (in salary and trade wise) but otherwise I'm not convinced he's the answer. Shouldn't we be throwing the kitchen sink at a gun key forward instead?

  14. Personally I think he's more good to us as a block on Collingwood's salary cap than as a ruckman on our own team. Surely any tall player we look at right now has to be able to contribute up forward when not rucking, and provide a marking target around the ground as well. Grundy isn't a match for the needs and there are much, much cheaper and younger players who are.

  15. Trade Hogan for Picks, trade one of the picks for Steven May, use the other on Tom Sparrow. Go on to win the flag and then maybe bring Hogan back, this would be some real 4d Chess.

  17. Viney's goal the other night wasa direct result of LJ's freakishness at ground level. Completely agree mate. Will be a star. I think we'll be alright either way though.

  18. Pies had a decision to make between Grundy and De Goey and until recently they were happy to lose De Goey but now they've shifted due to his recent form. Bottom line is they can't sign McStay, Hill and Taranto as they're hoping unless Grundy leaves now. I don't think they'll be asking for a huge amount in the trade, it's really going to be more of a question of if the amount we're willing to pay is enough, i'd say neither us, nor the Cats could afford anywhere near his full salary

  20. They sound very comfortable with Gawn down forward. He actually is a great contested mark, but his shot for goal is really unreliable - similar to Trac. You are just never comfortable with either of them ball-in-hand irrespective of how close they are to goal. If he was more accurate on Friday, we win that game. Need a speical project for these two players in the offseason, where they can really work on their technique and goal kicking accuracy. I think it also answers our questions re KPF plans - hence making Grundy quite an attractive choice in the absence of KPF on the market. My guess is Gawn will play upwards of 70% forward and provide relief in forward stoppages allowing Grundy to setup behind the ball. Whilst we have had LJ, i dont think we have been able to maximise this setup as LJ doesnt impact the contest sufficiently on the wing hence why Grundy IMO will be a huge upgrade here. The more i think about it, the more im liking this. Obviously contingent on the salary we pay for Grundy and the picks we have to handover for him.

  21. When KPF’s see the quality of our forward 50 entries, I’m not surprised no one’s banging the door down.

  22. Who are the available players that would improve our list who do not want to come to the club? Good key forwards are hard to come by, and expensive to recruit. If Collingwood want to pay McStay $600K a year, good luck to them. Franklin is 35 and wants $800K which prices us out. I don't see a Tom Lynch or Jeremy Cameron on the market this year, not even a Peter Wright. Maybe you could make a play for Mitch Georgiades, but West Coast would seem more likely. Perhaps better to save some cap space and make a play for Harry McKay next year.

  23. Let's for a second imagine Dogga is gone. We are still in our premiership window. Max is 31 next season. Tmac and BB are getting injured or playing sore more often. Weid isn't up to it. JVR is still developing. We have massive holes up forward and now also in the ruck when Max gets injured or needs a break. Established forwards and rucks aren't falling out of trees. As long as the pies are picking up some if the bill, then its a no brainer. Dogga isn't better than Grundy in terms of output anyhow, its an upgrade in the short to medium term.He is a way better mark and ruck

  28. Flynn (24 y.o), or Briggs (22 y.o) from GWS. They are pretty well stocked with those 2 and Preuss. Surely one of them would appreciate more opportunity, and playing with a better team. Both have shown some ability to take a contested mark / kick a goal, in their short careers thus far, on top of basic competent ruck craft.

  29. I was too harsh in this post and I can see a role for him if we get him. It just needs some planets to align before it's possible. The contract is a huge one. It would also require Grundy to change his play a bit to fit in with our style. He probably wouldn't be allowed/encouraged to play the same way as he has at Collingwood. He's a massive body who could play well into his 30s as a sort of premium Jarrod Witts. He gives a great contest in the ruck and competes long and hard. Gawn is a better player and we need Gawn around as long as humanly possible. Grundy would be great at soaking up those minutes allowing Gawn to play as a tall marking forward for a number of years, with shorter ruck stints. Grundy would need to play more as a conventional, wrestling, down the line ruckman, transitioning away from the 'extra midielder' role he's played historically. He can do it because he's huge, but he's always tended towards the easy ball around the ground rather than being happy to just compete for the long ball. He's not a great contested mark for his size but we would only really require him to stand under the ball, compete and halve those contests. Grundy would be playing first ruck, with Max giving him a chop out. The contract would need to be sorted out (!!!!!!!) and he'd need to 100% buy in to what we need him to do but anything that keeps Gawn around for longer is extremely tempting.

  30. One is 24 years old and one is 19 would be the starting point I think. Johnson seems more a lead up player not a crash the pack player.

  31. Grundy is a box filler. He doesn't win the important possessions that you need a ruck to win for your team to be successful. He's a hard worker who you can plug into the ruck all day and get an honest contest, but he's the smallest 203cm 108kg player that you could ever see. More important than that, though, is that his contract makes him completely untradable to a contender. Hard pass.

  32. Basically if he can hold more than one mark a game in the forward line then he’d be a significant upgrade on Dogga

  33. Yep, I was just picking a number as an illustrative tool. It wasn't meant to be exact. It could be 90%. The point being the pies are probably close to their peak readiness. And we are getting closer, but still seven weeks away from ours. The analogy I used is an Olympic swimmer who has a gold medal race in 7 weeks. She is swimming brilliantly, the best times she has since prior to commencing her big training block she finished two weeks back to maximise her chances of winning gold. Every day she feels better, and her times reflect that. On these times she'll beat almost every other swimmer in the world. Her current time isn't matching her own PB, is not close to a WR, and she knows won't win her gold in 7 weeks. However, she is confident she is on the right track and is confident of winning gold. As she did at the last Olympics. But she knows there are no guarantees. She has the fastest PB of any of her likely competitors, but is experienced enough to know someone else might have gone to another level, or might pull out the swim of their life in the final. Or maybe she'll blow her start like she did at the nationals. Maybe that upstart swimmer from abbotsford, whose times have been dropping at an alarming rate, has another gear and will pull something crazy good out come show time, like she did at the nationals. Or maybe her new conditioning team hasn't quite got the training program right. Maybe the little niggles and distractions she didn't have last time might have an impact. Maybe she will have some bad luck. No guarantees. She is raging even money favourite, but even at $2, if the race is swum 10 times, she loses 5 of them So, as i said on the show, if you think the pies are legitimate flag contenders, then by extension logic says so are we. Hard to argue we should have won that game. Should have doesn't pay the bills, and they fully deserved the victory. We had no excuses. But on expected scores we scored 13 more points than them. For the first time this year, goody was noticeablely furious. And that no doubt was because we should have won. If you accept we are not at peak physical readiness yet (even if we are at 90%), then it is only logical that we have another gear to go to. That, after all, is the whole point of a periodisation training program. Swimming your best time, even a world record, seven weeks out from the Olympic final means nothing if you don't win gold. No one cares about your scintillating performance at the nationals. I'm hoping tbe pies don't have another gear to go to, but even if they do I'd be confident if we played like we did last week we'd beat them.

  34. I'd like to see us fit him back in. He was looking a bit exposed at times physically before he was dropped but we have definately missed his creativity to turn defence into attack with a 20-30 m kick from the back half recently

  36. Ruck is the most physically demanding role there is. Gawn gets absolutely smashed in there and 99 out of 100 times it’s play on. Given he’s had 3 knee recos, there is no doubt that playing FF will absolutely extend his career. Plenty of FF retire in their mid 30s. Look at Kennedy and Hawkins.

  39. Wasn’t the long term contract Eddy got Grundy to sign supposed to keep him a magpie for life? Imagine what Grundy must now be thinking when, with 5 years left, he’s told to look elsewhere! Particularly when it’s essentially a f- wit like de Goey that the pies seem to want to keep in preference to him.

  40. Fair points. I was just expressing my frustration at what to me appears to be a supporter base that has more than its average of fair weather supporters. My hope being that these supporters whilst at home (presumably at the very least watching our boys perform on tv) also then take the time to breed the next generation of supporters who will rebel and do the opposite of what their parents did. I am joking of course……okay, maybe just half joking.

  41. The contract is the issue. The price needs to be right for us (which is nowhere near $1m. What a ridiculous contract that is) But why posters would be arguing against bringing a 2 time AA ruckman to the club based on his ability/style is beyond me. He can adapt and thrive with us I'm sure. And we fill the gap left by LJ departing while saving the picks we get for a crack at a KPF in a year or 2 (hopefully one of the King boys). If the price is right this move makes plenty of sense I reckon

  43. Please. That's enough. It is getting ridiculously tiresome. I could not have been clearer- I'm not blaming the loss on the loading program. In case you missed it, i'll say it again - to be crystal clear loading is not an excuse for the loss. Please stop misrepresenting my comments. It is so very frustrating. I never said the loading program guaranteed we would win the flag (for clarity, and to avoid the need for a rebuttal, not saying you said i did). I did say i thought we would go unbeaten after the dogs game and win the flag. I was obviously wrong about that, but that doesn't mean i was wrong about the loading program. Was the loading a factor in the pies loss? What do you think? Who ran out the game better? Was running out games an issue for us in the finals last year? It was for the dogs in the gf - which is completely unsurprising because their no doubt carefully calibrated physical preparation program (because you know, they a professional sporting organisation playing in the highest level of a fully professional sport) was thrown into chaos when they fell out of the top 4. As it will for us if we don't finish top 4. I actually think the crowd was a bigger factor in the loss than our physical readiness or any loading program. No one is revising any theory to match the results. It is equally frustrating to be accused of doing so. To be frank, suggesting this is the case indicates you don't actually get it. In fact, there is no need to 'revise' the theory. Quite the contrary. The pies game is evidence the 'theory' is CORRECT. You are confusing performance with winning. The fact we lost doesn't disprove anything. Our performance indicated we are on a clear upward trajectory. Our performance was better than that in the freo game. The fact we lost doesn't change that. We just happened to play a team who was better than us on the day. Our performance against the pies was way, way, way more impressive than our corresponding game last year against a much weaker Eagles team. We were level pegging for much of that match, had 10 mins of dominant football in the third and then slowed to a walk (for whatever reason) and nearly got run down in the last. So you could argue we are tracking better from a physical readiness perspective than last year. Anyway, that is it for me on this topic. I've had enough. Believe what you want to believe.

  44. Disagree. Grundy and Jackson are totally different. Jackson has the ability to get space and be an outlet at clearances, through his athleticism. He's also miles better at ground level. In ruck contests, Jackson relies on his leap, whereas Grundy relies on his strength and size. Neither have proven themselves to be great contested marks. Jackson still has time on his side to change that. Grundy was a high possession getter at Collingwood under Buckley, because of how indirect they played. He'd often be on the end of a sideways chip pass. Once Buckley was sacked, his stats dropped. The Pies would be rapt to get him off their books, even if they're paying part of his salary. I can't project how good Jackson will become, but it will be completely different type of player to AA Grundy.

  45. I think the footy department boffins have enough credits in the bank to be trusted to make the right call. If they reckon he's a good fit and the price tag is right then why the hell not? Ruck is the position of least depth on our list and Grundy is a proven commodity, albeit he hasn't been amazing the last few seasons. Trust the process

  46. I can see the appeal. Gawn over 30 and I'm sure we'd like to start transitioning him forward more over the coming years to prolong his career. He can be a head ache for opposition backmen, regardless of his questionable goal kicking. If it were to happen, we'd have to change our method going forward, especially if Ben Brown is still playing. And perhaps there's another forward we're eyeing off. Interesting to hear nevertheless.
