Today we remember Sean Wight who passed away on this day 11 years ago. A great footballer and, along with Jimmy, one of the success stories of the Irish experiment. Sean Wight (15 March 1964 – 30 June 2011) Sean is a member of the Melbourne Football Club Hall of Fame and was named as one of the 150 Heroes of the club during the club's 150th celebrations. The 185 cm tall, 85 kg Wight played for the Melbourne Football Club between 1985 and 1995, playing 150 games and scoring 63 goals. He is not only the first player to be associated with the Irish experiment, but also considered to be one of its most successful products. Wight was scouted by the Melbourne Football Club's Ron Barassi and Barry Richardson on a visit to Ireland in 1982 as having the potential to play Australian rules football. Before playing Australian rules, he played Gaelic football with the Kerry minor (Under-18) team which reached the final of the 1982 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship and with the Listowel Emmets club - the same club as Tadhg Kennelly. Wight was brought to Australia in 1983. He was part of an Under 19 VFL premiership side just weeks after his arrival from Ireland in 1983 and was widely hailed for his rapid conversion, though others who joined him from Ireland had much less success. Wight made his VFL debut in 1985 and became a regular backline player, recognisable with his trademark moustache. Wight played in two Demons night premiership winning sides, in 1987 and 1989. He began to develop a reputation as a dour defender, with an exceptional ability to not only spoil opponents marking attempts, but take high marks himself. Wight, along with fellow recruit Jim Stynes was a member of Melbourne's 1988 VFL Grand Final team which lost to Hawthorn. Retiring in 1995, Wight's career was somewhat overshadowed by Stynes, whose career in the midfield earned more accolades and media attention. Wight died on 30 June 2011 after a short battle with lung cancer. From Wikipedia35 points

Reported that Turner is set to get a contract extension until 2024: FRESH from his recent AFL debut, Melbourne defender Daniel Turner is set to sign on with the Demons on a new deal. Turner, who was selected by the club at last year's NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft, is expected to sign a two-year extension that will tie him to the Dees until the end of 2024. He has been improving at VFL level across the season, with the Demons set to lock him in to bolster their group of key backs. The intercept marker was overlooked at the 2020 national draft but his form with the Murray Bushrangers took the eye of the Demons at last year's mid-season intake. – Callum Twomey He could be another Taylor 'special'. Sad he was injured in his debut game. I'm sure we will see some very good football in the years ahead.14 points

Th best thing about this is it was so random. I mean no one was talking about Oliver, yes I know he wasn't out of contract this season but everyone is so focused on Angus and LJ and Melbourne just went boom this morning and dropped this. There is also no fan fare about it, no presser just an email. Now I bet today journos are rushing down to melbourne to speak to him. I reckon whoever sent out the email was pretty happy to be pressing send. It also says that Oliver has no issue what so ever playing under Goodwin and the stuff that was bought up about him in the off season. Well done Clayton.13 points

Best player in the AFL. I’ll fight anyone who disagrees. Well done Clarry. Forever a demon legend.12 points

I agree. As a middle aged man, what I’m about to say is completely pathetic, but I watch how enthusiastically these kids sing the club song each week - in particular Luke Jackson (and also Clayton Oliver) - and, in my observation, Luke seems to be right into the club and his teammates. Unless he’s a complete sociopath (which I don’t believe he is) and the money’s commensurate (which I expect it will be), I just can’t see him leaving. As an aside, now that Clarry has signed a 7 year extension, I won’t ever watch his enthusiasm when singing the club song ever again. Certainly not for another 6 years at least. I now have other targets.10 points

By signing now he takes all the 'fugazi' out of next year, his Free Agency year and everyone can just get on and play football.10 points

Yes, look I'm worried about the strain on his neck from all the Brownlows and Premiership medals.9 points

It’s funny as I don’t care how much or if it’s back ended etc cause I now have faith in our club to manage the $$$$$ properly. It’s an unusual feeling but one I am getting used to.9 points

Grundy's contract was always rubbish from the moment it was signed (in January with a season still to run from memory) - midfielders are different to ruckman and he was overvalued off one good season. Clarry is a multiple B&F, champion midfielder with one flag already under his belt and leading the AFLCA award and warm favourite for the Brownlow and he's only 24. You wrap these guys up the minute you have the chance.8 points

Being caught up with Gus and LJ I forgot about our No. 1 priority! this is the best news possible. gotta love this club, our best player of a generation and we don’t have to worry for one second about losing him or Trac to free agency. could not love this bloke anymore.8 points

Reckon the club wanted this first. No doubt will help get Dogga and Gus done as the $$$ will be probably backended to an extent.8 points

Both can stay. It’s not a case of if one leaves the other stays. It’s just individual choices for both of them, but it’s not because the club can’t keep them.7 points

Maxy just made an interesting comment on the Gus & Gawny podcast in regards to Weid. He said "I'm not the match committee, but I think that's his best position, Ruck/Forward". A fairly subtle statement, but I think it reads really truthfully, especially coming from a team mate.7 points

I’ve never supported Collingwood. But perhaps I was a feral pig or a desert rat, or something similar.7 points

And not to jinx him, but he’s been remarkably resilient. Has he missed a game since debut?7 points

I think Gus was keen to play more midfield minutes and assumed that had to be somewhere else - but then saw what Jack Viney delivered on Thursday night and thought ‘Actually, I don’t want to play against that. Sign me up!’7 points

It could be a nice touch if we announce his contract extension in late July, just a few days before we play Freo in Perth.7 points

Nothing to be ahead of. There’s been talks since the GF about it. Much like Petraccas extension last year. Almost exactly the same. Gus will stay, Jackson is still making up his mind but his manager will be in Melbourne next week.7 points

This is the big one. Our midfield is set for the next 8 years. You beauty. Well done MFC and well done Clarry.7 points

Great news and why wouldn’t he sign up for life. Our window is wide open for the next 5 years, great list profile at a stable well run club these are great days we’re living in folks7 points

Oh ok, how much do you think the best player in the game should be on during his prime? We are giving more years so they will be happy on less money. You like competing for flags, yeah?7 points

Fantastic news. He didn't look out of place at AFL level against Collingwood and hopefully he is back soon from his injury. His family would be stoked.7 points

The last I heard Jackson was staying, so hopefully nothing has changed. I think his manager is just getting his cash up.7 points

It’s a big decision for a 21 year old with the world at his feet. His decision has nothing to do with money. It’s going back to his family or staying at the Dees. It’s as simple as that. He’s torn, but loves the club, loves the boys and the club feel the same way about him. I THINK he will eventually sign, but a young guy offered a stupid amount of money to go back to his home state will obviously take time to make the best call for him and that’s his management and Melbourne are encouraging. There’s no pressure, yet.6 points

Has literally signed on to be our games record holder. Realistic career targets to chase; First player to crack 10,000 career possessions. All time records for contested possessions, clearances and Brownlow votes. Get after it, Clarrie!6 points

Puts a lot of what people, who claim to be “insiders”, say into perspective. Lots of people in the know in the media and on socials completely missed the lifetime contract about to be signed by the league’s best midfielder.6 points

Brilliant news and definitely our number 1 priority IMO - even though he's not out of contract until next year. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in our list managers meetings. I wonder if Clarry was always priority 1 in there eyes before focusing on AB and LJ or if maybe one of these two has confirmed some not so friendly news which has freed up more cash to get Claytons signature and lock him away. Champion midfields are what wins flags. Having two of the very best in Trac & Oliver locked away for years to come is going to see us at the pointy end of the ladder for a long time. Wonderful work!6 points
