  1. I think the whole way 7 use their broadcast team is poor. They need to get rid of all the blokey Crap and concentrate on calling the game. It seems like the broadcaster cannot have even a second of silence which generates hours of crap. Just let the the game play out on TV. Silence is golden sometimes.

  3. Having now watched the finals replays on numerous occasions, l think it is time we use our new found power in the AFL community to demand some changes in the leading commentary teams. The first to go must be BT. Not only is he so often factually wrong, but his understanding of basic tactics is so rudimentary as to be embarrassing. He is also quite open about his prejudice against the Dees. For instance: 1. l remember during the commentary for the game against Richmond on ANZAC eve last when we were leading by over fifty points, James Brayshow suggested that Melbourne should be now favourite for the flag. BT’s reaction, “l will never believe that until Max Gawn holds up the cup in September, no matter how successful they are during the season” 2. He has no understanding of basic team tactics eg. during the GF Langdon gathered the ball on the half back flank and raced up the the wing with Kossie racing with an opponent from the centre to get in position on the wing. Further up the field McDonald was racing towards the boundary line on the half forward flank with his opponent to give him an additional option. Langdon chose McDonald which prompted an outcry from BT saying he should have chosen Kossie (“l like Kossie” were l think his words). Several minutes later, Daisy Pearce, who was sharing the commentary with him and who has ten times his football sophistication, pointed out that he kicked it to half forward to lessen the risk of a turnover which could result in a goal to the bulldogs. Pretty basic football common sense but totally lost in his populist nonsense. 3 Angus Bradshaw: when the Dees were surging in the 3rd quarter of the Grannie, Brayshaw took an extremely courageous diving mark on the half forward flank about 45 metres out on a severe angle. If he goaled he would put us in front for the first time since early in the second quarter. He deliberately walked back slowly with his back to the play concentrating on what needed to be done to covert. BT went ballistic saying he needed to concentrate on the game. He clearly had no idea of Brayshaw’s history in poor accuracy in kicking for goal. In fact for much of the season he was having special tuition at training every week to improve his goal kicking at Choco’s skills academy and clearly was using that to ensure he nailed it. He did, which was a key part of our resurgence. The deliberate slow walk back was part of the process to ensure successful convergence. If BT had just basic football knowledge he would have known that. 4 Neal-Bullen marked 40 metres out in the last quarter when we were six or seven goals up. BT said he has to kick this so that the side will be able to enjoy the rest of the game, but if he doesn’t they won’t. This of course was totally nonsensical,. This can be bracketed with his ridiculous comment with five minutes to go saying “not a single person had left the ground”. How could he possibly know that?—- and it was said very dogmatically. I’m sure there are other examples that others could add to this list. We can do a lot better than BT. Time has passed both him and Eddie Maguire by. With much more sophisticated, and/or younger commentators (eg James Brayshaw, Daisy Pearce, Gerard Wheatley, Nick Riewoldt) providing much more nuanced commentary on a game which has become much more complex and subtle over the last 20 years, there is no long longer room for these dinosaurs. I propose we keep a record of all our examples of these incompetencies on Demonland, publicise them, and build a case for BT’s removal. We can do a lot better.

  7. I thought he was done, and Weideman would swoop in over the top. He pushed and pushed in the preseason, got himself into his best ever condition, and had a super, super year, especially early on. I am so glad one of the older crew - along with Max - got to see finals success. Well earned. While he wasn't in the best form during the finals, he continued to work very hard off the ball. In re-watching the finals games, the amount of times he was running goalward, 5 metres off his man and not used, was astonishing. His running capacity allows him to get to contest after contest, and if the opposition don't account for him, he will end up with 2-4 goals. Rapt for him.

  17. There were only a few of the 2016 Premiership team playing: Bontempelli, Wood, Libertore, JJ, Daniels and maybe Hunter. That is pretty much the leadership group, no? Very poor role models if that claim about 'abusing' our players is true. Our leaders walk the talk on humility and respect. If they are upset about our players singing 'Freed from Desire' they are as soft off the field as they were on the field in the GF.

  20. Watched the replay of that recently. Aside from the 24 to 11 frees in dogs favor we were not that bad. But boy did the umps give footscray an easy run. I think dogs actually train for high tackle frees and they certainly dont get pinged enough for throwing the ball. Maybe it lulled the doggies into a false sense of security. The dogs probably were the 2nd best team this year and they lost a few key players with injuries. But they also got a good ride in the lions final and were very lucky to just win that one. I'm so glad the umpires didnt spoil the granny for us. So looking forward to playing them again as well as Geelong. It was strange that the dogs were heralded as having the best midfield about because ours smashed them. Same with the touted cats forward line. I hope the free differential next year is much more even as I think it really carried the dogs a long way. Same with cats home adavantage which is why they are exposed come finals. Anyway, ive had my rant. Cheers.

  21. I'm trying to think of evidence to support keeping him. Best I can come up with is; - BT's channel 7 commentary is a huge boost to radio. - every time BT and Daisy Pearce are both commentating a game, the most positive version of feminism goes a bit more mainstream. - it keeps BT busy enough to not run for parliament.

  24. Nibbler has always been a very ernest player, He was plagued in his earlier years by fumbles and turnovers. He appears to have ironed out those deficiencies (largely) - perhaps he has become more comfortable with his role and spot in the side. Nonetheless he has turned into a key role player for us that covers more territory than anyone other than Langdon. He is super important for us in terms of the pressure he brings to bear and the consistent effort he brings across four quarters. His kicking for goal has gone to another level this year and his wet weather banana against Richmond was absolutely outstanding, He should be very proud of the footballer he has become.

  25. Brian Taylor is in the top echelon of the worst commentators in the history of the game, with Rex Hunt, and Kellie Underwood. And please don't wind me up with Brayshaws "bang" call. It really does my head in. The combo of his horrible voice coupled with the inability to think of something good to say. My head hurts. Have a listen from around 1hr36min of this. The commentator who calls the Oliver goal is a life long Melbourne supporter. You can feel the emotion in his call. Brilliant. Also listen to his call of the final minute or so, almost cheering his team on to a flag.

  27. My magic moment is just a little later when Jackson plants a handball so perfectly in Oliver's grasp that he doesn't even need to change his rhythm as he runs towards goal. That is as precise a single piece of play as I have ever seen.

  28. In response to Mac Andrew questions, draft guru 'Knightmare' wrote on bf: "He gets completely bullied at ruck contests physically. Put a body in his way and stop him from running and jumping at the ball and he's unable to impact the contest. So he's very much a long term project". "Some may be viewing Andrew as having key position scope. And maybe he could develop as a key defender. But with the way he leaps and so perfectly places his ruck taps for his teammates, I'm still at least projecting him in the long term as best suited to playing through the ruck". He seems some way from the crash and bash of ruck work so it is no place for him for quite a few years. Elsewhere, I've read his one on one work isn't great; not surprisingly given his slight build. These skills can be developed but in the short term he wouldn't fare well as a KPF or a KPD. Jackson took English to the cleaners in the GF. I mention English as he seems to not like the physicality of ruck work. Imagine what Jackson will do Andrew in the ruck if he plays there in the next few years. I'm thinking that even if we were allowed to match a bid for him in the top 20 we would probably pass.

  31. Sorry to see Jay go. First saw him out at Casey in 2018 where he was runner up in their B&F. Was thrilled when we picked him up and that he was given an opportunity to play at the top level. Has a good combination or run, skill and doesn't take a backward step either. Also has the ability to play back, forward and on a wing. Really hope he gets an opportunity at another club. He'd walk into a team like Carlton.

  32. ANB was far more than a role player. Role Players don’t nail goals 50 metres out on the boundry line. That takes skill under serious pressure

  34. Agree. I also think a call-off between BT and Rex Hunt would be worth listening to just so you could see the cringe-O-meter explode. And then get Brayshaw and Underwood together and count the seconds to tinnitus.

  39. It mentioned about tension from the clash late in the season, where things got personal. I seem to recall Hannan getting a late goal to seal it and he carried on like a pork chop which started some argy bargy. Not sure if it was the issue, but remembered thinking how pathetic the dogs looked. Anyway, we own them now..

  40. Our agents in Perth have sleuthed out this incident and have uncovered what really happened. Some Western Bulldogs supporters were on the balcony of a hotel. A hotel that doesn't have a 3rd storey. Some Melbourne supporters walked by. Some high spirited banter followed, which escalated to sledging. One or two of the blokes from each group wanted to go on with it but were met on the stairs by bouncers who told them if they wanted a punch on, said bouncers would oblige, with relish. Dogs guys went back to drinking, Demons guys went on to where they were going originally.

  41. I may be in the minority here, but honestly for me personally the moment for this has past. You can't replicate those spontaneous feelings of joy we all had imeediatley post the game and the party atmosphere they enjoyed in Perth, while most of the rest of Australia was excluded. To me, this would just be a slightly better than normal family day type function. I am much more looking forward to Rd.1 or whenever it is that we unveil the flag for the first time in front of 80,000 MFC supporters at a sold out MCG and give who ever we play an absolute hiding. Following that it's winning the 2022+ flags at the G, with my mates, son and old man that I'm looking forward to and then this moment will be complete and real.

  43. Can’t wait to watch it again when the DVD comes. We were the only Victorian team that had no premiership DVD. Now we have one in glorious colour. I remember when the grand final videos were released in 1996 (some people might remember them with the Barassi sticker “watch ‘em when you WANT to.”) I was dismayed to find there was nothing for the 1964 grand final. There was even the 1961 one, but there was no more until 1966. A while later, they rediscovered the 1965 one. I was hopeful that 1964 would be rediscovered too. Alas, it never happened. I was so jealous of Saints having their 1966 one (in great condition too.) Now I know they’re jealous of us having a recent one (and an AFL one.) I’m going to treasure this DVD for years to come.
