  1. Are Geelong who lost to Adelaide and Brisbane by 10 goals pretenders ? Are the Dogs, who lost to an undermanned Richmond as well as your ''pretenders'' ? Are Port, who've lost to Geelong, Brisbane, West Coast and the Dogs, i.e. nearly every top 8 team they've played ? This year is very close and there's no super team. Anyone who finishes top 4 can win it and anyone who finishes top 4 will have queries against them. Melbourne are no super team and there are queries. We have 6-7 weeks to start playing better football and finish top 4. If we finish 5th we're cooked.

  2. Finished watching replay late last night. Our first quarter was incredibly frustrating to watch. This unfortunately brought back memories of 2019. So many inside 50s for 0 reward. And once again it was the same usual suspects who continue to butcher it going forward.. Oliver, Harmes, Petracca and Viney. Notice these are so called leaders? Forward is a complete mess. Amount of times we had the ball forward of centre to then having to wait until the likes of Fritta and McDonald sprint back to give us an option. By then GWS were able to flood back numbers. McDonald played a good game playing as that roaming CHF, but yet we had to rely on Fritsch as our FF. Just a complete mess. I like Jackson, I really do. His ruck work and around the stuff is amazing for a young ruckman. But as a forward, he might as well be a witches cone. Doesn't add any value up forward and unfortunately he's a bit of a weak link because he's simply not a natural forward and this is taking away a spot for Weideman/Brown. Need to work out how best we use him moving forward because him up forward is simply not working. Stafford, Goodwin and whoever else is in charge of selection committee needs to swallow their ego's and arrogance and just get Brown in and leave him in there to build cohesion with his teammates. It was do bloody obvious that majority of us supporter raised this as a concern when team selections came out on Thursday. Petracca and Oliver are doing my [censored] head in. We saw the Hollywood [censored] they dished up against Collingwood and I said after that game that if Goodwin is fair dinkum he gives them an absolute bake. Well it's CLEARLY evident that nothing has been done by the coaching staff in rectifying this because that's 3 games in the row these two Id iots have cost us goals and turnovers through trying to be fancy. If I read another article that Petracca is in the same level as Bont I'll spew up! He is so far daylight apart from Bont that's its not funny. The comments around Hunt costing us the game is laughable. Besides those 3 blunders he actually played a good game. I can easily list 10 other things that cost us the game. He stays in the team. Full credit to May, Lever and Salem who were absolutely a rock in defence. They all did their job while the rest up the field completely shut the bed. I hope May tore shreds off them. How demoralised would it be when you and your back 6 are doing the job, but its the fruit cakes ahead who kill us with simple mistakes. I said last week that I believe the doggies were clearly the number 1 team in the comp as they were complete all over the ground. I said maybe their defence was shaky, but then I read a stat that they were number 1 in the AFL for some of the key defensive stats. Certain individuals who I won't name, had their rosy red and blue glasses on tried to justify this. This is why the doggies and Lions are the best team in the comp. They win they should be. We don't. Overall a very disappointing game.

  3. I'm glad I left opening this thread until this morning and had at least one coffee behind me. Yesterday wasn't on Hunt, Petty or Viney. We've lost three games by a combined total of 27 points by one, two & three straight kicks. Despite not getting out of second gear for most of two of them and switching off with 5 minutes left in the other. What needs to be fixed can be fixed and with the players we currently have. They've been doing things right for a lot of the year. Even for someone without a footy background it was pretty clear at the game that we weren't defending as a team for the whole of the first half. Straighter kicking for goal and an all team defence in that first quarter sees us build a sizeable enough gap on the scoreboard to keep GWS at arms reach for the rest of the game. Losing the midfield battle isn't critical to our game but we still have to be able to cause the opposition problems in all areas of the ground for at least some periods to take the burden off our back six and leading forwards or just to be less predictable. Winning just a few more of those centre clearances and moving the ball low and at speed to a leading forward. Yes, with a little more accuracy we definitely could have won with our smaller forward line yesterday. That said we have Ben Brown on our books for the next four years and he's not going to spent that time down at Casey so we have to work out a way to keep a high pressure defensive game with him as our main forward target and probably do it now. Straight away he takes the best opposition defender away from Tom and Fritta. He leads well, has a telescopic arm reach and above all is a consistently accurate kick for goal. Let the opposition worry about him being in our side, not us. I think a lot of sides wish they had the problems we have right now and the same list to work with. It's really important we don't squander all of our hard work though so need to finish top four and ideally miss a trip to Brisbane in the process if we can. If we can do that somehow then we're as good a chance to win a flag this year as any of the other top sides.

  4. We had the third youngest team out on the field this week. We are at the very start of our window, and literally not one single supporter thought we would finish top 2 this year, let alone win a flag. We are not where we need to be to win premierships, but we have a very strong foundation to build on. Nothing is ever as good or as bad as it seems.

  5. Hibbo kept Toby to 7 possies and 3 goals, 2 of which were umpire gifts and the other one was froma smother and then good handball from a team mate, which was unstoppable. Yes Hibbo didn't get much of it, but I am sure all his concentration was on stopping Toby.

  6. I was at the fence for a bit (until security booted me back to my assigned seat ?) and I saw Jayden’s face as he ran past on his way to one of his “brain farts” as some are calling them. It was as though his life depended on his next move. He had a look of burning determination that as a supporter you really wanna see. So yeah, lay off him. Please. edit: not you, DD. I’m referring to those who want his head.

  7. Yes I was at the game. If your summary of it is “we never gave a yelp” then I’m not interested in your analysis. We did most things right all game, but made the same small category of errors. You talk as if we have fallen apart but the reality is yesterday was a poor stoppage performance with missed set shots. Most of the rest of what makes us a good side was still there, including the defensive work and ability to transition the ball from the back half to a position to score from. If yesterday is the sole determinative factor for the rest of the season then sure, we’re stuffed. Bur it isn’t. Yes. We were screaming out for a marking option forward of centre.

  8. Here's the thing. It wasn't a bad day in the office as you say. To say so is glib, 'oh well we're 12-3' This has been building for weeks. We have only played 3 or 4 good games for the year - where we have played 4 quarters. The rest in reality have been scratchy wins an dpoor losses. We seem incapable of starting well, getting a lead and building on that lead. That is not the signs of a good side. Yes we can defend but our defence is under huge pressure and can't stop everyting. We are 3 and 3 from the last 6. We havent kicked 10 goals in the last 3 matches. Our fwd line is dysfunctional. We haven't kicked 100 pts since round 7. In the last 3 weeks Kickett has kicked 1 goal, TMac 1 goal, Spargo 1 goal, and Fritsch got 3 yesterday taking his tally to 4. That is not going to take you deep into September. We are papering over the cracks because we are 12-3. Our vaunted midfield yesterday were terrible. They were obliterated. They have been playing poorly for weeks by only playing in patches. Yesterday they were completely outclassed and were shown up. Bathwater maybe. The sefless footy seems to have disappeared and it was bees to the honeypot yesterday - what happens when players lose trust, don't play instinctive first give football and start worrying about their own stats. We have a hard run home and if the problems aren't sorted quickly we will be rueing a massive lost opportunity. Goodwin has had a good year but his history as a coach shows some deep flaws including not being able to get players up for the first quarter, being stubborn in selection and losing games to sides we should in reality smash. Think 2 losses in 2020 to bottom 4 sides that cost us a finals spot, think 2017 loss to 14th placed COllingwood when we didn't lay a tackle in the first 20mins of a must win game to make finals. This year poor wins over North, losses to the Pies and Adelaide. It's clearly not time to throw everything out and start again, nor is the sky falling, but lets be realistic about where we stand. We have had a good run but the next 4 weeks are probably the most important in the last 15 years. Crumble and this could set us back a long way. Stand up and acknowledge where and what we need to do better. GoDees

  9. Hi All, It’s not helpful to panic or over-react to a loss, and you can’t win every week unfortunately. Having said this, it is important to learn from a day like yesterday. I couldn’t be happier with this year, and the clear improvement choco, Yze, goody and the players have delivered. But, we do still appear to be slow to learn. I will summarise my thoughts below, and interested in any views, agree or otherwise. (Apologies for duplication, as I am sure you would have covered much of this) James Harmes: Is a tagger + nothing else. This is a player, that appears to get too happy with himself at times, and unfortunately is not smart enough to play a half-fwd flank, or wing. So if there is no tagging job for a game, then he should be playing VFL - especially as we have many similar players to him (but a bit smarter). Viney: let’s not panic here. If it takes Danger a month to get back to his best from a similar length injury, then we can give Jack 4 weeks before we start calling for his head. Petracca/Oliver: not at their best yesterday, but we can’t be a team that relies on them dominating to get a win. May/Lever: Thankyou to whoever’s decision it was to chase them - we are nothing without them. Petty: seamless replacement for Tomlinson. Reliable + compliments May/Lever. Kozzy/Spargo/ANB: kozzy needs a rest, a clear coaching error to not identify this. The three of them have been critical all year, but at least 1 of them does need to play a strong offensive game, to compliment the defensive pressure they bring most weeks. A good coaching move to identify that they were off yest, and try Hunt fwd. it nearly won us the game. Gawn: when not ruck, I think he provides most value a kick behind the play on wings/defence. When another key fwd (Brown/Weid) finally stands up, we will obviously have this luxury. Brown/Weid: it couldn’t have been more obvious last week against the Dons, that we needed another key target inside 50. Clearly they decided to take too much comfort from the win, rather than addressing weaknesses. I am concerned with Weid, and his ability to have a presence at AFL level. Please Ben Brown, step up and regain your status as one of the comp’s best full fwd’s. Fritsch: wish he wasn’t so selfish, but has a key role in the team + will benefit when Brown finally steps up. TMac: don’t change a thing. He is not our inside 50 target. He is our CHF that exploits his opponents lack of fitness by leading all the way up to half back flank. Will also benefit when key inside 50 target steps up. Jackson: give him the rising star, and sign him for 4 years. Will be a top 5 player in the competition in future years. Salem: half-back flank, and key cog in defence. Don’t mess with the things that are working. Hibberd: amazing that he is playing his best footy at this age. And let’s hope we have Maynard ready to play the same role next year. Jordon/Sparrow: Keep playing them (especially Jordon). They are the future + I am not sure potential replacements such as AVB + Melksham add more to the team. Langdon/Brayshaw: don’t change a thing. See above re don’t mess with things that are working. Rivers/Hunt: Riv a future star of the comp. Hunt - a great role player this year (although execution was off yest) keep the faith demons supporters. It’s a tough time of the year. Goody - Learn from yesterday, tinker and address the deficiencies, smash Port, then the season is well and truly on track.

  10. FWIW Liam Pickering had a good take on Crunch Time (SEN) today. Reckons it’s just a little dip in form and our issues are fixable with games under the belt in the run home. there was a 10-15 min segment discussing Dees and the theme was ‘no panic yet’

  12. I know times have changed and maybe I'm a bit out of wack here. I haven't really notice any other teams do it but Richmond few years ago. But the last few weeks I've seen our players laughing and joking as they run out or when they are just warming up before the bounce. Our starts have been terrible, and it's a genuine concern that we are always playing catch up footy. Is this a new thing? I question the mind set of some of these players who think it's going to be a walk in the park. Even in country footy we still get a serve pre game if players are seen laughing and joking when playing bottom sides.

  13. A couple of observations - and apologies if these have been raised earlier in the thread - i haven't gone through all pages. 1. Jack Viney is a very limited disposer of the footy. High floating dump kicks - which lack penetration. These kicks are either turned over, or inevitably formed another contest which we lost. He also burnt Petracca very badly at the top of the goal square. I am not convinced his "grunt" makes up for these incessant turnovers on our half forward line (which rebound very quickly). I'm not against Sparrow playing through the midfield - he has a cleaner disposal, more penetrating kick and is a midfielder playing out of position at half-forward at the moment. 2. Clayton and Christian both ball watching and not running two ways - happened at a number of stoppages. The outnumber at the stoppage really hurt us and you could see GWS plan to sit behind our players at stoppage and push players into contests and then hold the outside space for the spread when the ball came out. Kelly in particular carved us up on this tactic. 3. Our ball movement is so predictable it has now become a weakness. The one time we actually used tempo kicking to direct the ball slowly into the forward 50 it was effective because the other team just sets up now for a contest and creates unmarkable balls for TMac (or any other forward for that matter). Let's use some measured entries to reduce our predictability. This includes the short kick across our half-forward line and penetrating into the 30 m out space. Rather than simply relying on crumbing or miracle marks all the time..... 4. Pickett was so quiet it wasn't even funny, I don't even remember him getting it our touching the ball. What is the structural reason for this? Why isn't Pickett getting played through the middle at centre bounce any more? I found this was an effective way to "get him into the game" - he is the sort of player one feels who needs to TOUCH the ball to get into a game. Surprised he isnt getting some minutes through the middle - he is the sort of player we want touching the ball in the middle / half forward area -which leads me to my final point. 5. Is it time for Salo to play through the middle and do what he does off halfback (distribute hit up targets etc) through the middle into the halfforwad/full forward space. No other midfielder has been able to lower their eyes and hit targets in this way. Can we bring in another distributor (is Bowey ready) to play that role for the team, or even shift Sparrow or Rivers into that role?

  16. Lol now I’ve seen it all. I was at the game. We made plenty of noise in the last quarter to help the team. You know what we didn’t do? Select a non existent forwardline and struggle to win clearances. Jesus Christ let’s blame us supporters for putting up with a mediocre club for 60 damn years.

  17. Don't care what people say on here regarding our ladder position, but the Western Bulldogs are CLEARLY the best team in the comp. They are ahead on us so many levels. Their midfield to forward connection is light years ahead of us and they have forwards who actually impact and kick goals. Their mids just do their role so simple. None of this Hollywood crap that Petracca, Oliver or Harmes have dished out the past couple of weeks. Their midfield depth is scary.

  19. Wouldn't be as worried had we won two out of the last three against teams who are well below us. IMHO the rot started setting in against the Pies and has ebbed through the team since. We were effectively a man down while Weid was in and now with Viney back we've been a man down since his return also. He might get back to his best given enough time but for the moment he is a liability through the middle. We looked a bit better when Harmes played more mid time vs Viney prior to his return. We were one inside mid too many y'day and a KF short with the obvious move (once the radar showed very little chance of rain) BB in for Sparrow. BB was a chance of kicking at least two and there's your over the line win. We would still be sitting two clear of everyone and a loss against Port would not be so critical to ladder position. Instead we now find ourselves up against it fighting for a top four place if we do. It's amazing how much better a forward line clicks and how much incentive you offer those coming off HB/through the middle, at center bounces to extract the pill, run their guts out and link up to get it there when you know you have a tall target who can mark on a lead and overhead vs even the tallest opponents ...AND convert! Same with the smalls crumbing the spills. The selectors / Goody only have themselves to blame for ignoring BB's form the week before, missing the opportunity to stretch the Giants backs and make the most of our entries inside 50. Dumbest non selection of the year and it may cost us dearly. Form is a fickle thing and we may struggle to find it again with only seven weeks left against some very tough opponents.

  23. It’s perplexing. The MC seem to have done that thing where you tie yourself in knots convincing yourself something is the right thing to do. And then when you look back at it in the cold light of day - it’s just stupid and self defeating. You recruited a FF, because you wanted to have two talls plus a resting ruck, and then TMac form and the first 6 games scuppers that planning? And to play a bloke on and off for a half only invites ridicule and pressure. We have 7 weeks to fashion a forward line that has TMac, Brown, Jackson/Gawn, Fritsch, ANB, and Pickett. That is talented enough to score 80 points…

  24. Full credit to GWS. Can you remember them giving us any easy uncontested possession? The 3 holding the ball calls against Hunt in the last qtr were a clear reflection of their defensive appetite throughout the game. Unlike the Pies and Adelaide games, we were flat out beaten by a better side on the day that brought defensive intent and superb skills, as per Kelly and Whitfield goals.

  25. We were horrible in clearance today, but where it was lost was the ease of clearance against. In other words, our post clearance pressure was disastrous. No one wants to lose clearance by 15, but despite what some say, that doesn't have to be a big issue if our mids can immediately force the game onto our terms by pressuring the clearance and ensuring there isn't a clean takeaway. However, the number of times we let them get clean clearance was not good enough and it completely exposes your defence. GWS mids were very clean by hand today and we fumbled everything. Post clearance is the stat that really matters.

  26. Bit harsh on the calls to drop Hunt. When the game was in the balance he was trying to lift us. He got done holding the ball twice. One of them was a joke where he had no prior opportunity and the other he took 2 bounces but had no options because our forward line isn't functioning yet.

  27. When you lose a game by 9 points, keeping your opponents to 64 points, while you have a multiple 60+ goal a year forward in the VFL after kicking 5 goals the week before, is there any point in reviewing the match? The only review required is into what happened prior to 6:35pm on Thursday evening.

  29. Interesting stat caught my eye having a coffee this morning and looking at match review in The Hun. We had 23 shots at goal for an actual accuracy of 30% (7 goals, 13 behinds and 3 out of bounds) while the expected accuracy was 70%! The expected accuracy it seems, is based on the AFL average accuracy for where each shot at goal is taken. So average accuracy would have us kick more like 13 goals 7. That is a long way off the mark for a top team. GWS were a bit better at 40%, expected 65% I think. It’s those set shots from inside 40m and very little angle that we miss seemingly every week that do my head in. Fix that accuracy just to AFL average and we win most games.

  31. It's an interesting situation - I think a few of us need to take a deep breath. Fact is every club other than the Bulldogs are looking at us are envious of our position. Until next week at least. I think the combination of the lack of any large margined dominant wins, together with our fragility as a supporter base, is creating this sense of panic that really isn't justified. Personally I've never had a season where we just...keep on winning - I think it's natural that then when we lose, we get dramatic and think the wheels are falling off. We've known nothing else for our football supporting lives. The evidence says we've met every serious challenge this year under a variety of different circumstances -beat red hot Sydney despite playing poorly ourselves ('winning ugly') -reversing momentum against one of the best front running aggressive teams in the comp (Brisbane) -going after the wounded champion (Richmond) -systematically dismantled the gameplan and contest skills of our nearest competitor (WB) Whilst we beat Geelong, there were missing a host of their best players and I'm not sure we'd fare as well against their full strength 22. Unfortunately those who have led the charge - Petracca and Clayton - are immature. There are weeks or months (apparently) where they lose focus, lose application and lose consistency. The forward line is also generally very immature. It's no coincidence that Kozzie's drop in form has corresponded with the team's drop in form. Barring injuries to May and Lever, our defence will keep us in most games. The rest will turn on the mood and attentiveness of Petracca and Oliver. Think about the week to week consistency we get out of May, Lever (who is a very old young man), Hibberd, Gawn, Tom Mac, and the quietly mature Langdon. If we had that sort of consistency of output from our prime movers - Petracca, Oliver, Harmes, Kozzie - we'd look a lot more like a premiership team. The forward line needs work in general but I honestly think that lack of maturity is the problem. We just can't rely on our game changers to show up on any given week or even in any given quarter. We can fiddle with structure, we can add BB in, etc etc....I can't help thinking that is all academic. Our fortunes will rise or fall on the mental positioning of our prime movers come finals time.

  34. No issue with how people viewed his game yesterday good or bad, but the blaming that he cost us the game was unjust IMO from what I heard leaving the ground. The move forward might not have worked but it certainly created a bit of a spark that we desperately needed. He’s proven in the previous two seasons that he can find the goals, I just wished he backed himself with that run and had a shot from 40 to a vacant square rather than stepping inboard and looking for an option.

  35. We did pretty well to get so close given how badly we performed at centre clearances and stoppages, how poor our kicking for goal was and how inefficient Petracca, Oliver and Viney were by foot. Despite losing the clearances by 15 and the midfield being so poor with kicking, we had more inside 50s, 4 more marks inside 50 and 1 more scores. The game plan is ultra defensive and we get lot of our scores from interceptions in the middle of the ground. GWS were disciplined not to give us these. The plan needs to be a bit more flexible to go through the corridor and use the open wing. Particularly if we bring in another key forward. The biggest concerns are our centre clearances and the output of the small forwards. While Hunt made bad errors in the final quarter, at least he gave a spark that Pickett and Spargo couldn’t provide. I would think about playing Hunt forward in place of Spargo and bringing in Bowey. In the centre we need to try to surge forward and not be so cute. Ben Brown not being selected was not the reason we lost. It was our midfield and execution in front of goal. Fritsch was good in the deep forward role but got poor delivery/supply.

  38. Well, we’ve put ourselves in this situation by not picking Brown after he kicked 5. Now he has this weird “did he play” game and the angst sets in further. IMO it can’t be Weid next week. We gave that an extended crack and it didn’t work.

  40. Disappointing loss but, when you boil it all down, if we kick straight we win. TMac is the big worry for me. We badly need him to find his goal kicking mojo again. I love Trac but he has to slot that goal. Dusty wouldn’t have missed. Or Toby Greene. The Port game takes on huge significance now. Win and we put 2 games between us and them. Lose and we’re back in the pack fighting for Top 4. I’m still confident we can win over there. Our defence is so good it will keep us in the game but we must convert our chances. BB has to come into the side. His goal kicking is his key strength. And I wouldn’t be against bringing Melks back into the team either. Our delivery was ordinary yesterday and he would definitely improve us in this area. I’m very aware of his defensive deficiencies but we need to add some class and poise.

  42. Hunt's charges into the forward line in the last quarter explified his enthusiasm for a target - solely carrying the weight (and subsequent consequences) of a static forward structure, and he must be congratulated (at least) on the territory that he singularly gained in at least three of these forays. It is as if our forwards (other than Fritta) have limited desire to complete the plays or to make ground to receive with evasion, space and innovation. These are the consequences of playing forwards who are too comfortable with their responsibilities thus affecting their effectiveness and impact. Whilst our midfielders do take far too many wayward long bombs or unsighted clearances ahead, it is not entirely their fault. The forwards initiate zero plays with movement and clever positioning, thus providing zero targets for effective midfield clearances.

  45. That is sad news. Wayne and I became friendly when I sounded him out to run for MFC President, which he obviously agreed to. He then appointed me Team Manager of the senior side under big Carl. We tried to set up an Australian version of IMG, the big USA Sports management Company, but were both busy with other work and we let it go. Later I tried the same thing with Whispering Jack of DL and we managed several players, including Wayne “the Dominator” Johnston, the great Blues finals player. But back to Wayne, he was a nice and humble man and I wish his family and friends sincere condolences and RIP Wayne.

  48. Agree on this BBP, they beat us around the ball early and defensively were very disciplined to not allow us to get any overlap run. Hunt was doing the right thing in trying to generate some run in the 4th and him being caught is more a reflection of the pressure than what he did. Players such as Spargo and ANB were also caught a couple of times early in the match as well which I'd say is pretty uncharacteristic. Similar to how we denied Richmond and Doggies there ability to play the game on their terms, GWS did the same to us. Where we failed is that despite evening up the contest in the second half we didn't matches their pressure defensively right across the ground. How many times were they able to run the ball out of our forward 50 without enough pressure.
