  1. So I take it you guys are happy for Ben Brown to play elsewhere next year because you didn't want to give up 26 or a couple picks in the 30's. I know it's awesome to win trade week but it's even more awesome to win games of footy. Good on us if we can get Brown on the cheap but I won't be sooking it up if we give up picks 26 and 33 for him (and a later pick)

  2. I continue to be bewildered by the love of draft picks. There’s a greater than 50% chance the draft picks in the region we’re talking about will yield a player who plays 0 games. There’s about a 90% chance they’ll contribute little to nothing in the short term. Brown clearly helps us immediately and in the medium term. If Mahoney missed Brown because he wouldn’t cough up two picks in the 25-35 range I’d be furious. Sure I hope one pick gets it done, but I still think it’s cheap.

  3. Think this thread has divulged into a bit of "pick obsession" and Dodoro style lets be a pain in the backside stuff... you get a chance at 60+ goal kicking forward at 27-28 years of age by using a combination of some 2nd/3rd round picks, you just get the deal done. Would we rather trade in Brown for pick 80? Sure. But it won't be that and it shouldn't be that, fair business is good business, so let's just get it done.

  5. This is a myth and was disproven a few pages back with lots of footage and stats. Ben Brown took more contested marks than Jeremy Cameron in 2017...and 2018...and 2019... is Jeremy Cameron a lead up only forward? If so, why is he worth more than two first round picks? Brown will be a steal and is possibly one of the best suited players to us in the whole league. I'm still pinching myself we'll land him. He'd be our most productive forward since peak Neitz. Even if he goes at half his peak output, he'd still be our leading goal kicker. He's that good!

  6. Brown deal to be done tomorrow. I would not be surprised to see TMac move in a give away last minute deal. AvdB is a possibility to move and there is movement for a further pick swap to move into the first round. A couple of days to go and still a bit to play for. If we can make the move into the first round a well as the player trades we have made then I think we will have executed our strategies exactly as we wanted.

  7. Why are North dictating the terms here. Pick 33 in the circumstances is reasonable. They pulled their original contract, put him on the table and he has nominated us. They have no leverage. We just need to keep our heads.

  8. As long as they’re postmarked on the day of trade period they should be accepted. Count every lodgement!

  9. If it takes two second rounders to land Brown, who cares. We get an immediate best 22 player and I'd argue a better player than Cameron. The other thing about Brown is he's incredibly difficult to match up, because like Jackson, his reach is enormous. The King brothers and Daniher are similar threats for this reason. Brown improves us significantly.

  10. I know there's a few years still to go to assess this trade but he was worth every penny in 2020.

  11. i'd personally have no issues giving two picks in the 30s - they'll end up being closer to picks in the 40s brown is easily worth a first round draft pick equivalent imo - he's ready to go and a gun, particularly if you compare with cameron over the last five seasons i think it's perfectly justifiable for north to demand more than pick 31 or 33, for instance, given the fact that gw$ are rejecting 3 first round picks for a player who has similar numbers to that which we'd be looking to give up two speculative picks in the 30-40 range

  12. I don't put much store in what Jon Ralph reports but fwiw: "...Melbourne was “very open” to giving Picks 31 and 33 to North in exchange for Brown". In points that is equivalent to #14 ? Not on in my book for a player they have dumped on the footpath.

  13. Of his 65 goals in 2019 two thirds, i.e. over 40, were not from hit-up leads. They came from either contested marks, frees, tackles, separation, or snaps from general play.

  14. Trade week is just a giant d!*k swinging contest that only further shines the light on egotistical media and manager types that live in a constant state of over exposure and self adulation. I hate it.

  15. One further comment I heard was that MFC are in this as a long game. What they are doing this off season will be part of a much longer term strategy that is in place for the next few seasons. I note the positive, supporting comments made on the exits of both Preuss and Hannan as a marker to other players in the comp as to the respect the club has for the players. (This is my comment, not something that ha been passed on to me)

  16. So bring back Frost and Preuss then with 26 and 31 instead of BB? I hope we just do whatever the damn trade is whether it's 1 or 2 2nd round picks with a pick coming back our way, and we have a kpf next year. Amost any trade result is better than having Frost and Preuss/Tyson on our list instead.

  17. Del Santo also said breaking out of centre, Brown was a great presence and you couldn’t help be drawn to kicking towards him, gave Brown significant praise! Craig Jennings the strategist another to really rate Brown and how much time Melbourne spent on trying to stop him. Brown is a huge get for the Demons, getting him for a draft pick or picks in 2nd round is a big win!

  18. Don’t care. I have a severe dislike for nay-sayers. Let’s go back 12mths and look at all the May haters. Anyone neggging on giving up 2nd rnd picks for a player like BB is merely asinine IMHO. 60 goals 3+ times and if Cameron kicks doesn’t kick a bag in R22 he’s a Coleman medalist and near 2 time Coleman medallist at that. Great player for us and will bring much joy. Royalty or not. Club is extremely well run these days and I for one am bloody excited about #50 in 2021

  19. Would that plan B revolve around Weideman being double teamed each week and a washed up T Mac jogging around trying to get a kick in our forward line? Happy to pay a bit overs here. The rewards could be spectacular.

  20. Or the AFL is holding back the 'juicy' trades to create 'drama'. They will love Treloar, Cameron, Stevenson, Cox, Phillips, Dunkley, Brown announcements being delayed. That is a lot of fans hanging on (click baiting) for news.

  21. I guess we could infer a couple of different long games here: - Positioning ourselves for a strong 2021 and 2022 draft (always a good strategy, but surely secondary to finals in those years) - Positioning ourselves for the expected list and salary cap decreases over the next 2-3 years to avoid a Collingwood type cap crunch or a GC type list crunch while also doing the following: --- Positioning ourselves to re-sign Oliver and other OOC players through trade moves now (definitely makes sense) --- Positioning ourselves to recruit (by FA or trade) certain targets at the end of 2021 (very realistic given i) we need to have the money and picks to do it, ii) that those players will probably improve our chances in 2022 more than kids we draft next week, and iii) these things seem to start planning a few years out). We have been very smart operators in list management recently. We haven't lost players who we didn't open the door for. We have targeted recruits a long way out. The concept of a 3 year trade and draft strategy is something I hope and expect we have, but there are obviously some clubs who don't. With the looming cap and list crunches and the aging of Geelong, WC Collingwood and even PA lists, there is much to be said for making sure we are ready to grab the opportunity as it presents in 2021-2023 rather than selling the farm for 2021. Obviously this is reliant on believing we have a relatively atrong core list which is capable of competing, which the club seems to believe.

  22. My prediction - a good couple of pages of angry Demonlanders after it's announced today that Brown is joining us for a couple of 2nd rounders.

  23. I’m wondering whether the fact that we’re hearing rumours about ANB and and AVB being mentioned as trade possibilities that the club has given up the idea of moving Tom McDonald on but still wanting to make more salary cap room available for a further trade?

  26. i'd give up 26 on its own, or they can take 33 and 50 if they want two picks. both options seem fair enough to me.

  30. It wouldn't surprise me if there is a 3 party brinkmanship game going on. For example: Melb wants to trade with the dogs, points for 14. They have entertained this but Kangas have offered a better deal points wise. Unfortunately, the kangs deal is dependent on the Brown deal with us. So we want to deal with Dogs first, then North. Dogs want us to deal with North first, so they can trade with North. We are holding firm and refusing the higher picks to North right now. If that's correct we have the upper hand, because Dogs lose all if we don't buckle and both deals fall through. But this does require us to hold firm until the Dogs buckle first or the Kanga's buckle to us first (desperate to get something for Brown). We may blink first and make the swap, but that will only be if a) we find another trade with the other picks that we think is better then no deal with the Dogs, so cut and run reducing overall risk (ie lesser outcome but no risk of no deal) or b) if we believe that this holdup is preventing us making other trades e.g. due to salary cap uncertainty, other picks or players, or other trades that need the Dogs or North to come to the party etc.

  33. The points is rubbish unless you are using them for academy or fathers sons. If Nth take the deal they get 2 kids as 31 and 34 not a kid worth pick 14

  34. HUN reporting Carlton have backed out of the Saad deal. Either tactics or just tired of dealing with Dodoro. Doubtful we have cap unless Tmac moves on but perhaps we should contact Saad's management for a chat.

  35. 2 second rounders for Brown is a good deal. Presuming his medical went well. If we can get a pick back that would be ideal.

  36. Reckon we will still end up in the first round to get someone like Archie Perkins.

  38. We had better not give picks 31 AND 33 for Brown. One of them is fair.

  39. Not quite a small forward but if we are after an electric quick forward then I’m thinking Will Bravo. Even his name would be iconic. Saw him in Stingrays 2019 team (when I went to see Hayden Young). Bravo has that burst of speed with the footy and loves a goal. He kicked three on the day and I was thinking he’d be handy asset.

  40. I’m still onboard the Jack Carroll train as the player we need and the player we are targeting. Teammate at East Freo colts with Riv and Jacko in 2019. Plays like? Simon Black. That’s why he is what we need. Skilled. Tough. Outside-in type midfielder. Turning 18 in December. 188cm 6’2 left footer. Saw him in 2019 Futures match and reckoned he would be an excellent fit. Would compliment our midfield bulls. Hope JT agrees. It could be why we are pushing to get into the Dogs pick 14 swap. (Macrae would also be very very good ).

  43. Maybe the AFL should have a kpi around each round needing a 10 goal by one forward game :) it’s all fun and games until it’s Kent Kingsley kicking 10.11 against us

  44. What an era the early 90s were. 9 of the highest 13 scoring shots for a forward came in these few years. Someone was kicking 10 goals every other week. The game was absolutely incredible to watch. Every other sport has found a way for forwards/scorers to score more heavily.. soccer, nfl, cricket since then. Obviously more goals isnt necessarily always more exciting, but yea, um it was.

  45. Why? The Pies lured him with a contract offer. Then twice asked him to shift money into future years - second time they had to extend contract out to 2025 expiry to smooth the deferred payments for ongoing cap management purposes - because they'd stuffed their cap by offering Beams 4 years at 600K when they had not planned for that contract, and by generally handing out inflated contracts post 2018 granny. He is not getting $900,000 to play for each of next 5 seasons because hundreds of thousands of that amount is deferred payments from previous seasons. The Pies cap is a cluster of highest order. They need to salary cap dump a 5 year contract that includes deferred payments from previous seasons that make the contract untradeable without Pies paying 1 to 1.5 million over the 5 years for Treloar to play for another club and that'll go in the Pies salary cap each year. In most businesses staff involved would be sacked except Eddie was driving force behind Beam's return so action unlikely.
