  1. (in Luke Darcy voice:) "But, aw, gee, he wouldn't have meant to break the rules. You can't penalise someone just because they've broken the rules? You can't turn this game into netball. Can you?" (in Slobbo voice:) "Hey Gerard. This is the -- this is the -- let me explain -- let me -- Gerard. It's unfair Gerard. That's what it is. You can't tell me -- YOU CAN'T TELL ME THE AFL NEVER -- THEY CAN'T DO IT GERARD. They can't do it. They just -- it's unfair. If they try to -- IF THEY TRY TO -- you want my honest opinion? My honest opinion? ..... I don't know." (in Gil's head:) "An Essendon player? Nasty precedent. If we send him down, what happens when it's a Collingwood player? Eddie would ...." (trails off & breaks into cold sweat)

  3. Yup... I'm not bothered at all to play Fremantle in QLD, and would be perfectly fine staying up there to play both the Crows and Port too. Much less of an "interstate" game than playing them at Optus/Adelaide Oval, their actual homes, in front of a crowd. As for away games in VIC, are they really away games if there is no one in the stand? What's the difference, other than who controls all the LED boards around the boundary? Only true away games in VIC this season is GMHBA and we avoided that. Don't really get the melts, tbh..

  10. No.15 1989 Elimination Final v Collingwood at VFL PARK Waverley Another elimination final and another final at VFL Park Waverley. The Dees had (1989) another year like 1988 where a form slump would again cast them into elimination finals footy. We were flying high at 13-3 after 16 rounds and 2nd in the ladder amongst the powerful Hawks, Bombers and Cats. But injuries and lost form saw us lose 5 of the last 6 games. We held onto 4th place (14 wins) but a percentage of 96% showed our demise. We had hoped after the disappointment of 87 and 88 but no confidence leading into these finals. We would play the inform Magpies, a strong unit with 3 straight wins leading in. We had knocked them out in 1988 (they lost both finals) so they wanted revenge. They were arrogant. You could sense it in their supporters. Shaw, Daicos, Brown and many more very good players. The Demons were missing 4-5 key players through injury and we thought the year would just descend away. The game opened with the Pies taking an early lead. The Dees had the breeze to the big scoreboard end but were behind. The Pies kicked 3 goals to start the 2nd quarter to get 4 goals up. We felt like it was all over already. But somehow with the last 2 goals to the half to the Dees, it meant we were only 9 points down. We were still in it. In the 3rd quarter, I remember the avalanche of goals. We were sitting in the forward pocket to the right of the scoreboard. We kicked 7 goals in the first 15 minutes of the 3rd quarter to grab the advantage and despite the Pies kicking a few majors, we managed a 9 goal quarter and had a 4 goal lead. The goal frenzy was led by Darren a Bennett, Brian Wilson and Ricky Jackson. “Willo” was exciting and lifted the whole team. Bennett was brought in 1989 to address our weakness of a recognized full forward. He’d delivered. The Pies were shaken. Yet they had the wind now and 4 goals seemed barely enough. However the Dees held on, with the sealer kicked by Bennett. The final margin was 23 points. What a turnaround. Jimmy Stynes was BOG and he had carried us. Lovett had shutdown Daicos. Stretch’s run on the wing was excellent. Alan Johnson was sensational again. Bennett’s 4 goals were crucial. The Pies supporters were shattered. Two years in a row they’d been bundled out by their old enemy. We enjoyed the win and the September action. Melbourne 17.9.111 defeated Collingwood 13.10.88

  11. Gotta be honest. I think Petty is vastly overrated on here.

  14. Throwing up a thought, if hypothetically we could have a full crowd in Alice Springs, and bearing in mind that Tourism NT are one of our key sponsors, would people be keen for us to have a home match up there? My personal thoughts are that in this crazy world of ours if we could have a scenario of having a game with a crowd there vs an empty MCG I would take Alice Springs with both hands.

  15. Yep. If they'd dealt with it properly in the first place it would be water under the bridge by now. Completely understand Hertier's stand on this. Just wants them to own up to it and apologise like decent human beings. This just keeps swinging over Eddie's head.

  19. I know he is the expert, but how can he say there is nothing unusual? I don't think too many people would have been tested as often as Conor has been and to go Negative, Positive, Negative in such a short timeframe seems very unusual to me. If this is not unusual to be able to clear it in a short space of time, we are never going to get a hold of it in Victoria with asymptomatic cases. Essentially everyone would need to be tested every few days or we're flying blind.

  20. Agree. It seems to me that as you say Goody is modelling the forward line structure (and perhaps the defensive structure too) on the model employed by Collingwood. Tmac is filling the Mihocheck role and he is surrounded by medium, mobile marking targets such as Hannan, VDB and Melksham. With Kozzie playing the small crumbing role, Bennell the skilled deliverer and Fritter the finisher. I wonder if that sort of mobile structure helps disrupt an opposition''s zone system and also stretch and disrupt their defensive system as most teams have at least two to three bigs as key members of their back six. Geelong worrying about picking Taylor or not is an example of this issue. The other potential benefit of a more mobile forward line is an ability for that group to push up the ground and provide a defensive zone or wall something the pies are brilliant at.

  22. I should clarify... He showed promise and did play a few good games. I just feel that a few posters on here think that promising games equal future gun player. I'm not convinced with his move to the forward line.

  23. What a laugh. Tell us when do you become concerned by a new plague? When it exceeds deaths by all other causes by 10%, or 20%, or 100%? Of course people die from all sorts of other causes including food poisoning for example, but if suddenly loads more people died from food poisoning you might consider there was a problem there to be addresed. Ditto for respiratory failure.

  24. Petty may turn out to be decent depth, he turns 21 this year so he has time on his side, but gee wiz if we're throwing around Petty and Smith as "best 22" then we're not going very far in the near future.

  25. I thought you were joking but your serious. He was very promising last year and injured this year. No way should he be delisted. I think he would be in our best 22 ahead of Smith if he was fully fit. He's a keeper unless there was a suitable trade for him.

  29. While Lethal is my number 1 player over the last 50 years, he was a thug, who would king hit from behind, when he went after a player probably because he wasn't having a great day. No, the rules did not allow him to do that. My favourite player in the same period and also most talented was the great Robbie. Top footballer and top bloke. Sadly missed.

  30. They make these sacrifices to play football, which no one else is allowed to do at this stage. Exposure to a confirmed case needs to be a blanket rule. No exceptions. Essentially his manager argued why should he have to sit out when he is negative, which is happening to people all over the country. Football is not that important in the scheme of things. Inconsistencies, such as this and letting people attend a rally set a poor precedent and people will continue to disrespect the rules when they are not enforced consistently and fairly to everyone.

  31. Problem with this vs Geelong is that their smaller/medium size half backs are far better than our smaller/medium size half forwards. We're talking; Hunt, ANB, AVB, Melksham, Fritsch, Bennell, Pickett, Hannan vs Stewart, Tuohy, Bews, Kolodjashnij, Jordan Clark (who I rate highly) I think this area is Geelong's strength, moreso than their key defenders. That's why we must put in a lot of time working out our match-ups against them, and that's why I would be trying to pick a team that is designed to limit our opponent's strengths. The Geelong side, week to week, make very few changes, which is why they know and player their role so well.

  32. Setting a terrible example for the community, no one else is allowed such luxuries. As much as I love football, having had to remain in isolation myself even after testing negative, I fail to see why they get a seperate set of rules to the rest of us.

  37. Why bring in Brown for Hannan just so Harry Taylor has someone to pick up. Your playing into what Geelong want. Why not make Taylor pickup Hannan/Bennell etc which if delivery is right is a massive match up in our way. or with Stanley injured and if we go in with only 1 tall I wouldn't be surprised if they put Blicvas in the ruck to exploit Gawns run .

  39. And if they played now they would play for the times. You dont just lose your footballing ability if you get transported to another era. If you are a star at Aussie Rules, you are a star. Whether your name is Ablett, Blight, Carey, Lockett, Neitz, Hird, Buckley, Fyfe, Kernahan, Voss, Glendinning, Barassi, etc etc... those types of elite talent would dominate any era. Youre not making much sense.

  43. Disappointing to hear that he is going on for surgery on his groin tomorrow and will miss a large chunk of the season. I rate him highly and thought he looked quite promising as Key Position player that can take a contested grab and play either end of the ground. I believe he is out of contract this year so would love to see us sign him up soon.

  44. There not being much footy on after rd 1, I watched the replay a number of times. Brown grassed five marks that were relative sitters (ie not contested). None of that was due to the delivery, he just wasn't very good in that game - he was dropped for a reason.

  46. Why are so many people angry that we're not playing the game tomorrow? Why do we need/want to play so soon? For one, as has been mentioned by others, it's not set in stone that our game will need to be crammed mid-week at some point. There is the potential for byes, staggered rounds and other positive tests to create gaps anyway. But assuming it is going to have to be played midweek, why does it have to be this week? Why not aim for a situation in which the AFL gets us to play on a Thursday night, Friday night or Saturday afternoon, then back up to a Wednesday vs Essendon, then back up to the following Sunday or Monday night? Space out our games as much as possible, with notice to us, so we can prepare (rather than putting all 40 of our fit players into a match on a Sunday).

  47. The AFL are currently trying to work out the WA fixture and which 2 teams get sent over there into a hub first, one good thing is that having played WC over there already it's highly unlikely to be us - in fact we're probably unlikely to get sent there at all and get to play Freo here.
