  1. Some on here might not be too thrilled with this decision, but i for one am very happy we have decided to stick with Casey.

  3. Melbourne will retain its affiliation with VFL club Casey as AFL braces for talent overhaul Following decisions from Carlton and Hawthorn on their VFL alignments, Melbourne has also made a call on its future with Casey. The decision comes as big changes are on the horizon for the second tier competition.

  10. Basil Onyons is the correct spelling. 1905-1908. He also played first class cricket for Victoria after WW1. Met him once in the mid 60s when he was quite old.

  12. Yep, John Fidge played for us. We had very high hopes for him, but alas ... This from Demonwiki: The 1982 Victorian Teal Cup player and younger brother of Ted Fidge debuted two years later as a 17-year-old, and was a reliable forward in his first two seasons until right foot stress fractures kept him to just six games in 1986. He had been rumoured to be pursued by another league club earlier that season, but for 1987 was cleared to the newly formed Brisbane Bears at the end of that season for $125,000 - their fifth highest transfer fee for a recruit. Fidge played in the Bears winning first match, and appeared 16 times for them in 1987. After eight matches the next year he was sacked by the Bears three weeks into the 1989 season, apparently after punching Warwick Capper in an intra-club game and abusing coach Peter Knights. He then threatened to take the Bears to court for full payment of his contract. At the end of the year he was drafted by the Sydney Swans but instead chose to join SANFL side Glenelg where he became their full-forward. In 1990 he booted 124 goals. At the end of that year Essendon picked him with selection 24 in the National Draft, but he did not play a game for them. Returning to Glenelg in 1992 he kicked 92 goals out of a total of 316 in 69 games for the Bays, then joined Frankston in 1994. During his playing career Fidge had 20 operations, and later revealed that he played with spondiolythesis (back injury) throughout his time in the game.

  13. Ted Fidge was pretty tough and played some decent footy if I recall correctly. He came from Bentleigh. Did he have a brother that played ? Fidge never took a backward step.

  15. What rubbish. Round 23 2017 was nothing like last weekend. Round 23 2017 was indeed "everything to play for". Round 1 2020 was a maelstrom of stress with potentially nothing to play for, if the season can't get re-started. They ran out there last week with significant job and financial uncertainty. A game that could have had plenty of importance turned into an odd shell of a game that could literally mean nothing when the ink dries on 2020. And I don't buy the "West Coast were switched on" argument as if to say they were on some other level to us. They weren't exactly dominating. The game turned on a 5-minute patch at the end of the first quarter where they kicked 4 quick goals. For the rest of the game it was quite even. Incredibly different to Round 23 2017.

  16. I liked Nathan Carroll. He was undersized and fought like hell against the big forwards. HE was also a legitimate Dumbass off the field. What's not to love?

  17. I regret to inform those that have taken out a Life & Annual Membership with Demonland that as of the 1st of April you will see the return of Advertisements on Demonland for at least one month. Not having any footy has severely cut down our visitor numbers for this time of year and has had an huge impact on our revenue stream to pay for the costs of running the site. I know that everyone has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and that is why I’m not asking anyone for assistance or passing the hat around. The return of Ads should hopefully cover the costs If any Life or Annual Members would like a refund I will happily provide it. Please let me know here or via PM and I will arrange it I apologise for the inconvenience and the annoyance of having the advertisements back temporarily but I assure you that in time they will disappear again. I will reevaluate in a months time. As a Life and Annual Member you will still have the following benefits. Life: As an added bonus Life Members can change their Display Name once every month as opposed to once every year, they have a higher storage quota of messages within the Private Message system, they have a higher storage capacity for attachments and they can edit posts up to 4 hours after postings instead of 1 hour. Annual: As an added bonus Annual Members can change their Display Name once every 100 days as opposed to once every year, they have a higher storage quota of messages within the Private Message system, they have a higher storage capacity for attachments and they can edit posts up to 2 hours after postings instead of 1 hour. Thank you for your understanding. Andy

  18. i can't be bothered going through all the legitimate reasons they might not have been switched on. in the circumstances i can find it quite reasonable, despite the fact that many posters think they are robots. these were extra-ordinary conditions and the game probably should have been abandoned after the announcements only hours before ball-up. i don't expect many to agree

  19. whilst i was initially bitterly disappointed with the team's performance i have rethought the whole situation and come to the conclusion that (without going through all the obvious reasons) the player's minds were simply not focussed on football that day. the game was rendered effectively meaningless (just before play) and the players just reflected that, consequently i take no realistic meaning from the resultant display. deconstructing anything is therefore also meaningless. of course those most afflicted with mfcss will continue to analyse and criticise every minute detail to add to their masochism pDc

  20. At that game and visibly recall the Fidge- Millane 'incident' to this day. Ted rather publicly and mistakenly retaliated to sly whack from Millane, during the play, with a powerful right cross to the head. Millane was dazed, confused and on very rubbery legs. So much for the faux tough image, Millane attempted to project on the footy field. Unfortunately for Ted, Swooper massively disapproved, it was Ted's last senior appearance and he was delisted at seasons end. The match itself? After an three goal opening burst by the Magpies, a fabulous Brian Wilson lead recovery by the Demons, who stormed back to secure a memorable victory.

  22. The Eagles were playing at home...a quick drive from the ground and they're back safe with family. Everything was falling apart around the country, state borders were being closed off and our playing group were stuck in Perth playing a meaningless game. They're not robots...I was upset with the performance on game day but after settling down and having a bit of empathy for the group I realised we could not judge much if anything from that game...

  28. Dead set one of my all time favorite Dees. Gave us fantastic value at C.H.B after crossing from Adelaide. Great judgement of the ball in the air, gutsy as hell, good 1 on 1 but had the prerequisite ordinary kicking foot on him.

  31. The other Mann - Len. A ruckman and cousin (?) of the first Mann Bob Miller - first permanent back pocket ruckman in the days when there were four followers (ruckman) who used to rest in a forward or back pocket (where else did Gary Dempsey take so many marks in the last quarter?). Bob was not really a ruckman but a dashing defender. Peter Smith - Norm's son

  33. Very interesting perspective: https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-31/coronavirus-scott-morrison-consensus-jobkeeper/12106334 Shows how petty and self serving politics has been on all sides for such a long time I did have a laugh at this description of Alan Jones: "...he gasped, like a dowager clutching a scented hanky while tottering through plague-ridden streets."

  36. Rod Owen played some great footy for Melbourne as well, albeit before injury, 19 goals from 9 games in 1991. Steven Clark, ex Essendon, played some bloody good footy in his 21 games, 18 of them in 1991.

  40. Robert Walters. Played about 25 games for the Dees in the late 70s and early 80s. We had been belted by 190 points to the Lions in late season 1979 at VFL Park. It was as dark a day as I can remember. I sat through it and was gutted after the game for hours if not days. Then in round 2, we played the Lions again at VFL park. Walters has shown ability as a 6ft tall opportunist full forward. Walters kicked 7 goals as we upset the Lions by a few goals. I think they almost were going to carry him off the ground. I think he was injured shortly thereafter in the season and then always was injured again with a variety of problems.

  42. I'm with you. If the players weren't switched on that is an indictment. A bit like rd 23 2017 when we had to beat a lowly Collingwood to make finals for the first time in a decade. Everything to play for but the players weren't 'switched on'. In fact they didnt lay a tackle inside the first 15mins. I am so sick of Melbourne not turning up to play. The coaching staff is on notice this season and they have fallen at the first hurdle. Yes there was an unusual circumstance but it didn't bother the Eagles. It would seem in fact (and has been pointed out elsewhere) it wasn't in this case their lack of endeavour. It was the complete failure of their game plan and ability to have any system bringing the ball into the forward line. Same old crap we have been dealing with for a decade. What doesn't help is people making lame excuses for them.
