  1. I saw RDB play a fair bit of footy first with us then with Carlton who were very often televised in the mid to late 60s, then at Port Melbourne. He was my favorite player as a kid and because I really didn't understand the reasons he left MFC until much later, it hurt to see him play at other clubs. Much as I wanted to have his endeavour and spirit and attitude (and a little did rub off), as a footballer he was not quite in the talent class of Darly Bulldock, Kevin Murray or Ted Whitten his peers of the day. RDB was guts and determination and he pushed himself to his limits. As a player who was able to read the play to find the ball, miraculously create time where no time for decision making existed and then to CONSISTENTLY execute the required skill, by hand or foot, in my view Robert Flower was without peer. His slim physique should have been an impairment to his durability as a player, but it wasn't. Rob could carry injury and fans were often not aware of it, such was his graceful ability and timing to get the ball and avoid being tackled by the opposition. There are plenty of other players who had a bigger impact for us, but they played in a different time or could not last the journey of a full career. Rob played when we were rubbish. He was the only reason I went to the G for a decade to see us get flogged. In his interview with Mike Sheahan he said he always felt we had a chance, that was hard for me to understand as a spectator but easy for me to understand as an observer of a player who lived and breathed red & blue. He could see nothing else but the spirit that was the club at that time, knocking back money and finals to be true to himself and his club mates. May he rest in peace and from a good place, soon see his club finally secure his football life's dream.

  8. Irrespective of the Jessie situation, people need to understand that clubs lie, players lie, AFL officials lie and Managers lie. It is an art form in AFL football.

  9. Everyone, including the AFL admin, have to get over making scores happen in AFLW! Its not the same game! Low scores make for great contests... That's CONTESTS!!! Accept that the scores will be lower. The women are already limited by the time allowed and modified rules. Accept that if the men played under the same conditions, the scores would be considerably lower! Our women did extremely well today after kicking into a gale in the first Q, and having to field an inexperienced team due to injury. North were considered one of the power teams of the comp. Credit where credit is due... Great win Dees!

  10. Ok, I'll be upfront and say my view of the Media in general is coloured by experience (including a Ch9 reporter who tried to stitch me up because I repeatedly asked her to stop talking). Strange way to start an apology I know. I've been critical of the coverage in Maroochydore and I can be quite blunt in my opinions. I'm also a person that can congratulate those doing a good job as well. It appears our media people have been busy on a number of projects and having just watched the Daisy comeback promo, I would like to acknowledge what is a great story well presented. Keep up the good work and "Go Dees"

  11. I think most people have compassion and empathy for Jesse and his situation, but obviously footballers are news as we all know and their lives and situations are media fodder. A story like him not playing again is big news and that is the business journos are in, so we don’t need to shoot the messenger, whether he is right or wrong, he is doing his job. I am sure he has heard something, as he wouldn’t just make up something that is totally wrong, as he would look a fool. Even Robbo in his article, said he may never play for Freo again, actually repeating the original piece, but then including a statement from Bell, who denied him leaving, but not that he might never play for them again. If Jesse retired, after a few days of headlines you wouldn’t hear his name mentioned again. Lastly, I personally feel very sorry for a kid who I thought could be the next Carey, with all he has and still is enduring. I hope he gets back to full health.

  12. Not worth a new thread but for your information I swung past Gosch’s paddock this morning on my training run and found a small squad working with Daniel Cross and another trainer. It might not have been rehab but perhaps a voluntary extra session, no MFC training colours on at all. Cross was running repeat 100 m sprints with TMac and Melk while Brown and J Smith were doing longer, slower repeat runs of 200 plus. Bedford was doing agility stuff between cones on his own. TMac, Melk and Bedford then did some 30m kicking to the other player on the lead and practiced some high marking, all pretty laid back from what I saw but they could have going for an hour before I arrived about 9.40. They were finishing up when I left just before 10. I thought the main squad would be doing something today, maybe up at Casey?

  14. I am only interested in watching the dees play (and the grand final). But that largely applies to the men too. I don't mind the low scoring and different skill level. I look at as different game to an extent. The arm wrestle has its own fascination. And skills aside the courage to put their bodies on the line they way they do is phenomenal. So gutsy. And tough. And they are at huge risk of injury (without the same sort of income protection) given their bio dynamics, strength, size, inexperience and the fact they are not professional (far from it). But i had a very familiar sense of tension and nerves in the last 3 minutes of today's game as they battled to keep it in our forward half and fight to to hang on for a win. And i was pumped when they did. Loved how joyous they were too. Go dees!

  15. I'm in the same boat. I watch it because it's Dees related and I want to see them win! Women or men. I dont understand why others feel the need to shoot someone else down just because they don't agree with the concept or have no interest. I can see why people don't enjoy it.

  16. It wasn’t going our way early, we weren’t clean and North took their chances in the first. Effort was there and when you’re looking for something to inspire or just lift the team that little bit more up steps Hore with that great tackle that led to her and our opening goal. Game changing moment for me. She was fantastic today. Great win by the team.

  17. An enjoyable day down at the park. A very good win by the girls. I thaught we shut them down with good contested footy and our backline was magnificent in the 3rd quarter. Downie and Birch played fantastic games. Birch was an important pick up. Daisy was quiet today but was there to direct traffic from the backline. I thaught it was a good coaching move. Our midfield lost it at centre bounces and thankfully there was only a few of them. Howeveer around the ground they were very good and applied a lot of pressure. Paxman played a great game and was supported well by O'Dea with Hore and Scott playing well. Although a low score I thauught our forward line looked dangerous with Zanker and Cunningham. Zanker was fantastic in the last quarter and presented well all day.

  20. He was ripped this time last year. So what’s the transformation? i reckon he’ll be better this year but incrementally as he has done over the last 5 years. team performance hid how good Trac was last year. If we perform well, he should dominate and be in our top 5 players easily

  22. I think Norm Smith was more responsible for that era - and was probably undervalued as a player. directly involved in all but 2 of our premierships. without him our history would look more like st Kildas.

  24. I don't often agree with Cornes in fact we have a saying in my household; "Always bet on the guy that Kane Cornes picks against". In this case he is spot on. Particularly when he is talking about this stupid Pre Season Doco. Whoever signed off on this should be sacked. I couldn't give a rats how good the quality of the video is with the slow mo and the close ups and the inspirational music. The fact is we haven't COME BACK FROM ANYWHERE. TO HELL AND BACK. Where is the back in this narrative? If we win the [censored] lot this year then by all means make you doco with slow mo and inspirational music but until then do all your talking on the footy field. Yeah sell some hope but sell it on the [censored] footy field.

  31. Give credit where credit is due. Not to take away anything from Swooper but Barassi assembled that list and mostly did it the hard way. Came in 1981 on the condition Ray Jordan came across to coach U19’s & Reserves. The core of that team came through that system or were recruited by Barass.

  34. I’m currently in Byron Bay for my wedding anniversary. It’s raining cats and dogs. Biblical proportions. Being an old fashioned romantic, I’m drinking single malt and reading Demonland. I just read this entire thread. We’re going to win the flag in 2020. I’m convinced of this. Thanks for the reports.

  39. Generally, I agree with your sentiments about Jesse’s recovery and also in general about not shooting the messengers. However, it should be known that the messengers in this instance are well know for flinging about questionable scuttlebutt and their message about Jesse doesn’t deserve to be given much credibility if at all.

  40. One would seriously be happy if this was correct (May and Lever with a full season). There are the usual and some newbie supports for the backline, as well. Many of us here on DL will still miss the 'excitement machine' with the red hair, freckles and ears worthy of some appreciation. It is ponderous just how far Frosty might have continued to improve - and it is sad that Whoreform have the right to display such progression.

  42. It really is a remarkable comeback by Daisy. Giving birth to twins 12 mths ago and how much her body would have changed and tonight at 1/2 time they showed a story on her coming back. She was at 94kgs after giving birth and has got her body back to footy fitness. You can sense how much the players love having her back and she is a great leader for our club.

  43. Big statement there mate. i have made 100’s of Promos. I know what they are. And that is exactly why i do not like the timing of this one. it’s too early. and if others disagree so be it. but this time i agree with Cornes. You don’t. maybe i am older than you, and have seen more false dawns.

  45. Spot on chook, he also told me he got more running a place in a profession foot race meeting than he got for a Saturday footy game. Don Williams left Melbourne and played in Gippsland for two years ( Sale I think ) because the money was better. He then returned for the 64 flag.
