  1. I'm happy to put my hand up. 2 year deal, minimum wage (I'm happy to take a hit on what I'm on now). A couple of years of free tracksuits, dieticians, personal trainers, and any free goodies that some of the stars are happy to throw my way. I won't even request a trade at the end of next season or the one after. Also happy to put up with 2 years of fan criticism on Demonland. Just call me the modern day Lucas Cook.

  2. I get your point, but as clubs say, we have to back ourselves to make him happy. We have to create an environment that he is happy. Carlton have shown themselves to be ruthless, both in what they are doing with Martin and what they did in taking Nick Stevens in the same circumstances. I am not sure that you succeed in this world by being the nice guys. The Bombers kept Daniher against his wishes. The Swans did the same with Papley. Silvagni had the chance to do a fair deal and didn't, presumably to steal the player from the basket case, bottom club, that has just received AFL help. I am not sure the AFL would be happy if this is done to the Suns, especially by a side that has about 5 number one picks on their list already. I think the AFL would be happier if we took him, so a bad precedent is not set. Some on here want us to grow balls, now might be the time.

  3. Because you draft a player who will hopefully play for the next 15 years, not someone who will step in and peak from year one (palmer, Rich, Lewis Taylor). Losing most/all of your first year is not the end of the world. Cripps managed just 3 games due to injury, Max King was drafted with pick 4 following a knee reco and Hogan and Petracca played no games due to back and knee injuries. Draft for the long term. There's also nothing to suggest that he won't be back to his best when recovered. If it were a broken leg, I'd have big reservations, but there are plenty of examples to draw on where players have returned from knee injuries to have exceptional careers. If he's there at pick 8, I say we grab him with both hands.

  4. I am a bit surprised that in the trade wash-up there is much talk about our lack of small forwards and no talk of Lockhart as a possible answer. He has dash and in his first year found the goal consistently if not spectacularly with 9 goals in 12 games in a team with a non-functioning forward line. He could not have had a more demanding debut year than 2019 with us yet showed promise. He's early 20s so close to mature and will only improve with a serious pre-season.

  6. GWS don’t have enough picks this year & next to keep us happy, and it’s now too late for them to trade players to get more picks. I think they’re banking on us taking what they have to offer. And I think we’ll decide it’s not enough to slip down 3 places. Bidding on Green also ensures they have to use their pick 6 on Green, and there’s one more player available for us at pick 8 that might not be otherwise. Conpletely comfortable for us to actually select Green. If he’s as good as he should be, you find room for that sort of player. Seriously, if offered Cripps for a 1st round pick, would we knock it back? No, you’d make it work.

  7. Kemp is Dangerfield like. That’s as simple as it gets. Can win it inside. Can burst clear. Can play outside. Can go forward and win it and kick the goal. Physically strong enough now to play AFL. 188cms 83 kgs. Built. His injury kills 2020 but providing rehab goes to plan then he walks in to our best 22 for round 1 2021. If we pass up, he’d be a steal down the order. Whilst I’d like to see Kemp drafted at 3, I know Young is a safe call at pick 3 and I’d support the safe call. Certainly if Kemp was there at 8, I’d be hoping JT is screaming out his name.

  8. Draft him. [censored] Carlton and their scheming p.o.s Silvagni.

  9. If it were my choice Pick 3 after the Green Bid Hayden Young - like his penetrating kick, could be very valuable in transition Pick 8 - Brodie Kemp has so much versatility and despite the knee injury I would take the punt on him.

  11. Having a player of Martin’s talent fall into our lap is nothing short of a miracle. We have to take advantage of this. The memory is still fresh of Collingwood bullying Luke Ball through to pick 30 in the ‘09 draft. People have been calling for the club to grow a pair and take a stand... this is our opportunity.

  12. And that's his choice - but just like any draftee, he goes to whichever club selects him. If he wants to behave like a free agent, he needs to earn that right through another contract with GCS. If he wants to enter the draft he can: a) Go to the club that selects him. b) Play a couple of years in the local leagues, then try again. I'm not just saying this as a Melbourne supporter - it is akin to draft tampering to attempt to scare away other clubs. The integrity of the draft depends upon honest engagement with the process.

  16. We are pathetic if we are not up to our eyeballs in Martin. He brings exactly what we desire. Upgrade on Stretch/JKH and we had the money ready for Jamie Elliott?? We would have the cap space surely? Will be filthy if we let him slip through our fingers.. May and Kolo should of started a group chat with him at 7:30pm yesterday!!!!

  17. I can't see a trade with GWS that would satisfy us now that players are off the table and we've knocked back their future first rounder. Unless they can manufacture something worthwhile like another top 15 pick (unlikely) in this draft to go with pick 6 I think we will keep pick 3. If that's the case I hope we bid for Green and force them to use as many points as possible. We then take the next best talent at 4. Having said all that, I wouldn't be opposed to splitting pick 8 (pushed down to 9) on the night. One scenario (and I'm factoring in that Green will have an early bid and all subsequent picks have been moved down one) could be that Port maybe keen on Dylan Stephens but know he won't last to their pick 13. Would they be desperate enough to package up 13 and 19 to get their man at 9? We may be keen on Weightman at pick 9 anyway and it's possible that we will know that he will still be available at 13. We then have a free hit at 19 for Bergman or whoever. This is of course just a theoretical example but shows the flexibility we have with two high end picks.

  18. While the AFL love to change rules every year, I doubt they’ve changed this one. Martin can nominate a prohibitive salary ask and length so that only Carlton are likely to draft him, and is free to renegotiate to a minimum salary deal after getting to Carlton if he wants. BUT the original ask is what hits the salary cap, not the actual money paid in the renegotiated deal to make sure clubs don’t use this to manipulate the draft. Also, again from memory, I’m pretty sure a player can only nominate X dollars over Y years which prevents them setting an ask of say $1.5m in year one and then 100k per year for the next three if their desired club can accomodate something like that. The player can only say $1.8m over four years. Finally, I think if the player nominated terms (they aren’t required nominate terms, although Martin would) it can’t be just for one year so they can’t do the “$1.5m for one year” and then sign the 100k for the next three in the subsequent contract to simulate the earlier example.

  19. Kemp seems to hit the contest in a similar way to Martin or Oliver. He accelerates into the stoppage, rather than being flat footed. Seems like a natural ball winner for that reason and unlike Oliver, appears to be able to play more time forward, followed by bursts in the midfield. This will suit him coming into the AFL system. It's early, but could have a similar trajectory to Martin. I can see the Bontempelli comparisons too, but will be interesting to see if we're seriously looking at this kid.

  21. Ha ha ha. Sorry, been out and haven’t been glued to the trade radio like some ? The players were from St. kilda, with Tim Membrey being their main one and Bruce second (once he flagged interest to move). Once Bruce nominated the Bulldogs it made it harder of course, and once King re signed it made it even harder. Some of you may not rate Membrey that high, and may not have been so excited by the prospect of him, but I rate him and would love someone who leads up to the ball and actually kicks straight for goal and has a pretty good record in the past few seasons. Attack me at will if you thought I oversold him as a strong prospect we were after ?

  22. So, as the dust settles, I thought it would be worth looking at what we received and what we gave up in the trade period. I think I've got this right, but I'll edit it if I didn't (and please feel free to let me know where I stuffed it up!) In: Tomlinson, Langdon, Pick 8, Future Second Rounder (Hawks), Future Fourth Rounder (Freo) Out: Frost, Pick 22, Pick 26, Pick 42, Pick 50, Pick 61, Pick 79, Future First Rounder,, Future Second Rounder, Future Fourth Rounder Using a scale of A+ right through to an F, how would you rate the trade period as a whole? For me, it's a B, although that could rise or fall depending on how we go about using our first two picks. If we can break one of them up and get something really good back for it, then it could push toward an A. If we were to relent and do the trade with GWS for Pick 6 and a future first rounder then it might drop to a B-. But I doubt we do that. But we finish the trade period with two picks inside the top 10 and we've added a good player in Tomlinson and a very good player in Langdon. We did give up quite a few picks, however we still hold a second rounder, a third rounder and two fourth rounders for next year to go with the two top ten picks this year. I know proof will be in the pudding when it comes to how we really did, but I'm interested to see how people are feeling right now.

  25. I’d absolutely love it if we leaked that to put Carlton at ease and flip on the day! ? I feel like we have been in the position to get screwed so many times in the past, hell he got screwed by missing out on pick 2 this year, I want us to play a little bit of dirty pool. If it gets us to the top I couldn’t give two ?!
    3 points
  26. Why are ‘well placed sources’ leaking now?
    3 points
  27. I can see it already. We pass on him and Blues grab him. He kicks the winning goal against us, putting us out of the 8 by one game and missing finals. Don't say MFCSS is dead.
    3 points
  28. Do we bother? If he wants to join Carlton, would we select him and potentially put up with him sooking through the entirety of his contract? Actually, stuff him. If we can afford him then I'd select him. Stick it right up Carlton.
    3 points
  29. Ironically Carlton were the last club to draft a player through the PSD who wanted to go to the Magpies. A Port player. Port were not satisfied with the offer and let him go into the PSD. Carlton snapped him up. Once a player gets to the club they settle quickly. It comes down to whether we want him and can afford his asking price. Unless we advise him that we have no interest then he is in exactly the same boat as every other player nominated. You go where you are called in the draft. If we call him if he wants to play its with us. You can bet he will not walk away from the game. He can blame Carlton for not paying up.

  30. if they are only moving 2 places up the (10 for 8)draft we'd need to trade the 2020 second rounder we acquired for their 2020 first round selection

  32. Young looks to be a more penetrating kick than Salem, way more agile, and perfect for that rebounding half-back role and given some time could probably rotate through onto a wing.

  33. According to the contracts post by Lucifer's Hero, Harmes. Petracca & Viney are the only big ticket items we have to tick next year. Still reckon Martin gets to Carlton. They can horse trade some picks to satisfy GCS who will promptly delist him. If he wants north of $700K a year, Carlton are welcome to him. Let him chew up their cap. Because if most of their high draft picks & young "stars" progress, the old Bluebaggers are headed for a cap crunch of GWS proportions. Can't keep 'em on minimum chips forever !
    3 points
  34. No they can't be traded. We should be taking him with pick 2 in the PSD. Gold Coast won't take someone who has refused to sign a contract and walked out and moved to Victoria. If he is set on Carlton, then we hold them over a barrel and make them compensate us for not taking him ahead of them. We are in a win-win situation here. We either land a good footballer who fits our needs for no trade cost, or we negotiate compensation with Carlton for not taking him. If the club doesn't stand firm and make the most of an advantageous position, then nothing has changed and we're still a weak feeder club. Surely we've grown some balls now?!

  35. That'd be right McQueen. They finished 16th, or third-last, on the ladder this year.

  36. Some nice highlights. But playing devils advocate here: I've always heard discussions about a correlation between top end talented juniors who win their own footy going on to be successful at AFL level. I don't know enough about Stephens and this may just be a limited sample, but the centre clearance at 1:20 is the only time in that video that he won the ball himself, and he fumbled, the rest came from a team mate winning it. I'd like to see more of him winning the footy himself.

  37. Assuming we go to the draft with picks 3 & 8 this gives the club a chance to add 4 good players to our best 12 (Injuries aside and assuming Tomlinson & Langdon perform up to standard) And the best we've done in the last 15 years in terms of adding good players is 2014 when we added Petracca, Brayshaw & Harmes (3 only) But the draft can cough up busts as well as gems so fingers crossed.

  38. The clubs who have the currency to do this are Freo (pick 7 and 10) and GCS (15 and 2020 1st round (likely 1-5) and their mid 1st round pp (likely 10-12). Just can't see any benefit for either Freo or GCS needing pick 3. So l also think we will go to the draft with 3 and 8. It will be interesting to see if we bid on Green at 3. Two scenarios: If GWS get 4 from Adelaide, I reckon we will bid on Green at 3 to force them to use it. No reason for us to gift a Grand Finalist a free hit at another top 5 player especially if it is the player we want at 8 (and I'm guessing the quid pro quo of players for GWS to not bid on 3 if they got it would have been discussed in a nudge-nudge, wink-wink manner). If GWS don't get 4 from Adelaide we can pass on Green because Sydney will definitely bid on him at 5 forcing GWS into pick 6. Sydney won't trade GWS 5. As and aside as this comment not related to either post above. For posters concerned about bidding on Green and then 'stuck' with him because we already have too many 'inside mids' we can always trade one of them out next year. And Green may well spend some time at Casey as most first year players do so I have no problem taking him at 3.

  39. But in that case, any player out of contract is effectively a free agent. Why trade when you can just wait, let their contract expire and then sign them as a DFA.
    3 points
  40. They have nothing more to offer us...player trades are finished & they've given us their best pick options which we've turned down for good reason. Can't see any reason why we won't go to the draft with these picks unless we can turn pick 3 into 2 picks in this years first round...

  41. I'd keep him and delist JKH and add Murray as a free agent. B: JETTA, MAY, LEVER HB: HIBBERD, PETTY, SALEM C : LANGDON, OLIVER, TOMLINSON HF: HARMES, T.MCDONALD, PETRACCA F: MELKSHAM, WEIDEMAN, FRITSCH FOLL: GAWN, VINEY, BRAYSHAW IC: JONES, HUNT, YOUNG, WEIGHTMAN EMERG: VANDENBERG, MURRAY, J.SMITH, HANNAN CASEY B: JORDON, O.MCDONALD, J.WAGNER HB: MURRAY, HORE, KOLODJASHNIJ C : STRETCH, SPARROW, BAKER HF: HANNAN, J.SMITH, NEAL-BULLEN F: LOCKHART, BRADTKE, C.WAGNER FOLL: PREUSS, VANDENBERG, SPARGO IC: DUNKLEY, CHANDLER, BEDFORD, NEITSCKE EMERG: ROOKIE

  42. I don’t agree with that at all, Should St Kilda have passed on max king last year Due to his acl injury ? Who is the 2019 version of max king ? There isn’t one.. Next years draft is heavily compromised with academy picks which is one reason we traded into this years draft instead and the second reason in my opinion is because we’re backing ourselves to bounce back next year and that our first pick would have been late first round. If we rate Kemp as the clear 3rd best player we should take him, A year on the sidelines learning in a professional AFL environment would set him up nicely for 2021. There’s only a handful of draftees each year who have a decent impact in their debut season anyhow.

  45. C. Good: - Langdon Meh: - Frost out - Tomlinson in, he might be useful but he's chewing up some serious salary. Bad: - Refusal to trade out anyone aside from Frosst to redeem value whilst they still have it - Gus Brayshaw mainly, although I wonder if Melksham and Hunt had interest. Ugly: - Not turning over the bottom of the list - Not bringing in a variety of players Expanding on these two I just don't see why we've kept the Wagner's, Jones, ANB etc instead of signing a key forward/ruck, a small forward, a key defender, outside speed etc. I look at Ryder, Butler, Cutler etc getting traded for nothing and think why not us? Incomplete: - The pick swap deal with North - Plans for the final couple of list spots
