Not sure how much substance this has. Jackson has consistently said he is not here for a long haul. It was only in September 2014 that he confirmed he was on board for 2015 If PJ wanted a longer contract this is the first time it's been mentioned in public. If Bartlett thinks he has to go shopping for a CEO post 2015 then he certainly has to start looking now. Cook would be a good get and PJ knows all about succession plans Ideally PJ has become invested in the club & wants to continue beyond his current contract. If that's the case, sign him up for 3 more years. We need the stability If it is all bulldust then Bartlett needs to get on the front foot in tomorrow's media & put it to rest. Then he can go back to being The Quiet Man president & leave Jackson & Roos as the public faces of the club. That has been working well17 points

Good on you Saty - thanks for posting the training reports again: a decision that I expect the absolutely overwhelming majority of people here would be very happy about. I, for one, really appreciate it.15 points

No training wasn't cancelled Not there King, Trengove, Bail - everybody else made an appearance of some sort Hunt came, looked around and left after discussion with fitness staff Neal Bullen back on the track, did a bit of running, he is feeling really good Brayshaw is the latest poor sod to be struck with gastro, tried to train, he could laugh about it though Vince, White, Watts, Howe (lifted his running speed again), Fitzy (on a deload day) and Garlo (with a bit of back tightness) all in rehab, Ball movement/offensive drills again for most of the session, did a bit of running at the end, seemed to be an adlib it, Roos had to leave, so assume the last drill was cancelled and running substituted, lots of players stayed on after 'official' session was over doing bits and pieces, last off just for a change Cross, McKenze, Grimes, Vandenberg and Pedersen who seems to have joined their group Petracca is certainly putting his hand up, stand out today along with Matt Jones (again), Kent, Hogan, Lumumba and Grimes Any questons again feel free11 points

This was a really pleasant and enjoyable training thread to read. Thank you everyone for keeping it that way and of course thanks to the 4 or 5 supporters who took the time to go to training and give us their thoughts Go Dees10 points

I attended training this morning from about 9.30am to 11.15am with about 15-20 other fellow onlookers including Mark Stevens, but no sign of TDI with his scooter and iPad... The conditions were good but fairly warm and glary. On light duties today I noticed Watts, White, Howe and Vince all running laps with Fitzy doing so later on. Kent, Garlett and Garland were in and out of the main group with a few niggles. Dunn had his calf strapped and was taking it fairly easy but later joined the main group along with Petracca and Terlich. Vandenberg seemed to be in full training. After all the warm ups and stretches the group really didn't get underway until 10am where they split into three groups playing keepings off. It was mainly talls on talls, mids on mids and small forwards on small backs etc. Hogan's aggression for the ball was of note and Riley, Viv and Jetta were impressive with their quick hands and at closing down players quickly, causing turnovers. Later on, the players had a drill where they kicked the ball from the BP to other side of the HBF where the awaiting player took a running mark and pushed off with speed hitting up an awaiting player near the corridor and then handing that ball off to a player near the centre circle where that player would hit up a player inside the 50 for a goal. The boys were really vocal in this and mostly hit their targets but I must say Pedo and Fitzy dropped a few easy marks and their kicks weren't that great either. The second drill was a bit more contested with the High Vis (green/white) tops being used. In this drill a coach would kick a ball near the HBF and a player would have to win ball and then kick to the other side HBF where that player would mark the ball and continue to kick down the line to a player near the wing. From there the players would look for options inside the 50 and utilise short passes to score a goal. I found the movement to be really good in this drill and all were hitting up targets under pressure. The players later split into three groups again where I watched the group closest to me which were the rucks/KPF's and KPB's doing 1 on 1 marking/spoiling contests. Hogan, Jamar, T-Mac and Frost were the standouts for me at winning the contests. Their bodywork and aerial skills were sensational, I'd say Frost and Hogan impressed the most, but O-Mac was also giving Gawn, Spencer and Pedo a run for their money which I liked. Around 11am they moved into match sim where they were focusing on getting the ball from the back line to the forward line and using run and carry and short passes whilst maintaining possession. The movement was very quick which was good to see and the boys were all talking to each other to help look out for their man. They would often rotate the backs and forwards with miss matches, I think i saw Jetta on Gawn a few times... but the back line were really holding it together and switching opponents so no one got loose. Grimes really impressed with his voice and direction to the players and the same goes to T-Mac. I noticed Gawn looked very damaging down forward marking everything that came his way and kicking straight through the goals every time (he's definitely in my SuperCoach). All in all it was a moderate training session, I didn't see any players gasping for breath. I think Roos just really wants to cement that quick ball movement into the players whilst also giving the kicker some options. Players who impressed me today were Frost, Gawn, Kent, Stretch, Viv and Grimes. P.s this is my first post so go easy on me fellow Demonlanders... Cheers.8 points

A lot here have forgotten how good he was in his first 2 years when 100% fit, which is what the OP asks in his hypothetical scenario. Sadly for many reasons we have not seen the best of him for a long time, a fit Trengove is very much in our plans moving forward. I hope we see it and I have no doubt he has the application and drive to succeed, the big if for me is Jack's body needs to allow this to happen. I hope for his sake and the sake of the Team we see him returning to full fitness and reap the benefits6 points

A person has an opinion that some people would share and others not share. That does not make that opinion "stupid, inane, misguided and pathetic". Ironic that you then give your opinion that some would share and others not share. You could equally make those disparaging comments about your own opinion. Using personal and insulting comments about another's opinion is why so many posters get fed up with the site. We have just got over the hoo ha with TDI however after the initial melee everyone responded in a mature way allowing for the dialogue around training reports to continue. Your opinion is a reasonable one. Your slanging off at RGRS is not.6 points

Beautiful morning out there - sunny with a light SW breeze. I arrived probably close to 10am and it looked like the group were just finishing their warm ups. Definitely not cancelled today! Long session... I left around 12:30pm when it was winding down, though quite a few were practicing set shots among others things. Again, more of a skills / ball drills session that finished with sprints and laps. General comments below: No sign of King, Hunt, Bail or Trengove today. ANB was back, running laps with a light strap to his knee. Good to see him again! Rehap / light duties group seemed to be White, Watts, Garland, Fitzy, Terlich and Howe. Watts, White and Howe did a few light things on the far side of the oval but spend most of the session doing laps. Bernie also did only laps I believe. Garland did drills early while Fitzy and Terlich ended up doing basically all the drills later in the session. Brayshaw left early today. First drills were all basic kicks and hand balls in pairs and then group loops with running. Great to see Kent and Hogan amongst it all Intensity then went up with contact drills - players separated into tall forwards/backs and everyone else. One midfield group was doing a ground ball gather then brace for incoming tackle and try get a handball off. Apart from that I can't actually remember too much of these drills... Next were full ground drills with players moving from one station to another and included kicks, hand balls, play on etc. These are quite interesting looking at kick accuracy as the players are under more pressure. A few errors but tidied up with minimum fuss. Full ground drills were then two teams, blues vs high viz, trying to maintain possession from a stoppage at defence and moving the ball inside 50 then goal. Lots of voice in these, either calling for the ball or directing other players into space or pointing out options. Quite fun to watch these ones. Gawn was used as an option quite a few times, covered ground and got on the end of a few to convert. Petracca was pretty good, also M Jones, Lumumba, Grimes and Hogan. A couple things stood out to me during these drills. Stretch doesn't look like a 1st year draftee - did not look out of place, just strength in a contested situation more like a draftee. Very impressed! Love Garlett's speed, not always used but provides options. Frost is quick too, a couple quick spoils. Lumumba was mainly down the other end from me but saw quite a bit of run followed by a couple long kicks. Will make an impact. Hogan just looks like he wants the ball so bad every time. After these drills most players did sprints followed by a lap of the oval. McCartney seems not to be running drills but be providing feedback to players on various aspects of what they've done such as technique and timing. Heard the word "fantastic" quite a few times as well things like "you should've committed to that lead earlier.." etc. One funny moment saw the McDonald bros in a 1 on 1 at FF during a full ground drill with TMac defending. Oscar managed to outmaneuver Tom and took a great grab. Then went back and kicked the goal to big applause and shouts like "There's a new McDonald!" Dunn got a calf strapped at one point but went back into drills. Did a lot of directing from FB during drills. Byrnes took part in the all the training today. If a remember correctly he was going to be a playing coach at Casey this year...? Love the way Jetta gets stuck into all his opponents, whether it's Dawes/Spencer or whoever he only knows one way. Salem looks such a gifted footy player, saw him take a couple one hand grabs during the ball drills. Looking forward to his 2015. People have mentioned Toump a bit lately - he looked pretty quick to me today. Plenty of running in all the drills and quite involved. Didn't stand out to me today but I don't mean that in a bad way at all as much of the group was pretty solid today. Jamar is tracking very well and is the clear no. 1 ruck at this stage, in my opinion. Stronger than the younger rucks in rucking drills, taking good grabs and running well. Also have Cross firmly in top 18, geez he's in good nick. What a great addition to the team. Petracca should definitely get opportunities this season if he continues the way he's going. Grimes, TMac, McKenzie and Salem did a intercept / 3rd man up marking drill in defence towards the end. Vandenberg took part in all the drills today and also doesn't look out of place. Improved fitness will help but a lot to work with there. Can the footy hurry up and start already...6 points

I just woke up to read this rubbish and gossip-mongering on 3AW. I'm pretty angry about all this! We do not need this garbage causing instability at the Melbourne Football Club! I demand (as a paid up member) that our President Glen Bartlett (as well as Peter Jackson) address this issue first thing this morning and get on the front foot! No more instability!!! We cannot allow rumours to derail the start of our 2015 season!5 points

Better late than never! Beautiful morning for training with a blue cloudless sky and cool breeze creating an ideal training environment. Most earlier posts summed up the session pretty well, I'll see if I can add a fresh spin on the mornings events. Arrived at around 9:30 to see the boys warming up with some basic handball drills. Vince, Watts, White, Howe and Neal-Bullen (good to see him back) spent most of the session running laps. The boys then split up into three different groups (talls, mid-sized, smalls) where each played a "keepings off" type of drill where they could only handball. One player who impressed me in the smalls (I think) was young Billy Stretch who was just ramming and tackling into anyone who had the ball. Also loved watching him use his pace to shrug off anyone Who dared to tackle him. Although I don't expect him to play much senior football this year, I could see him making a nice cameo and play a few games. Next on the agenda was a full field drill where players kicked the ball to a leading player which would continue all around the ground. Enjoyed watching Petracca during this drill as his kicking action is a thing of beauty. While on the topic of "Truck", his endurance appears to have improved since he was first drafted. Noticed that he was going harder for longer periods of time. Dunn, Hogan, La Bamba and Jetta were some other stand outs but to be honest, most players were very solid. As mentioned in another report, Fitzy dropped a sitter but I'm just being picky. It was a entertaining drill to watch. The final drill I tuned in for involved the boys moving the ball from the back line to the forwards at the other end of the ground. I didn't see much of the stoppage work in the back half and who was involved but there was plenty of fast movement through the wing courtesy of Lumumba. Hope we see plenty of that this year. I also noticed that Hogan was pushing himself up the ground to provide a target for the players in the middle. I remember seeing that during the Geelong NAB cup game last year. Meanwhile in the forward half of the ground, Gawn was feasting at everything at everything that came his way, using his height and strength to clunk almost every mark that came his way. Although it was a simulation, he easily finished with about 4 goals including a running one from 40 meters out on an angle. I last thing I remember from this drill was TMac launching himself to take 2-3 fantastic defensive marks in defence against the likes of Gawn and Dawes. I remember a fellow viewer who identified himself as a Collingwood supporter (who was clearly blown away by our impeccable training standards as well as TMacs efforts) asking me who number 25 was. I left shortly afterwards. A few short points - Noticed that Oscar Mac has put on a few kilos over summer, looked a bit stronger in the arms which assisted him in outplaying Hogan in some marking drills - Bail, Hunt and King weren't present. - Couldn't help but notice Shannon Boo-urns participating in many of the training drills with the boys. Obviously still wants to be a part of the training environment and among they boys instead of just being the Welfare Manager. - To those who were there: anyone else notice Garlett wearing the number 33 instead of his usual 36? I've noticed it during the last few training sessions I've been to. Cheers to all the other posters who go down to training and provide reports to those of us who can't (this was my first sessions in a few weeks). They're greatly appreciated.5 points

I was there, didn't see as much as i liked as it was one of my puppies first outings so was more concerned with her (if gave a black lab a pat in passing, she appreciated it)... that and we managed to stand behind the rehab group of watts, howe, white, vince, ANB at times garlo and fitzy (but they were back in the main group on occasion so might have been a rest day) STILL onto what I took away from it. Generally I get to one or two preseason sessions a year so it is interesting to see how training both in method and quality has evolved. From Danahir where (granted i was young and it was a fair while ago) it looked like they mostly just went out for a kick around to baily with lots of circle work and spreading to Neeld's one on one tackling drills then an uninspiring practice match where no one could hit a hand-pass and I thought it was just because we had developed good defensive tackling pressure (how wrong was I) to early last year where they rotated through little "pods" of different skills so i was just hoping we would not turn it over as much (stuffed i know where the much improved defense came from) to this year where the post have been expanded and it looks to be much more all encompassing all ground type of work where the focused stuff from last year is being applied in a broader manner. What does this mean for the season? considering my previous record, i'm not the one to answer that. On to the drills... apart from the mandatory handball soccer type of keepings off at the start, the rest of the time day was full length ball movement. So to me, speed of ball movement, retaining possession and kicking to big targets was the order of the day. Two quotes from McCartney, "clear space, you don't want the defender near there" and "good you have learnt it and are getting much better" play watch... My stand out would be Max Gawn, don't know if it was he was the only one out there in white shorts but monster-ed the forward line. Up until now he has looked like a baby Giraffe all gangly and awkward (much like fitzy still is, but looks better at full speed than a jog) but seems to be turning into a baby gazel much more surefooted, refined, a thing of substance (probably not the best analogy but it's all i have) Shannon Byrnes. Even though he blew up allot (resting on his retired laurels?), was clean as a whistle How Hogan, turned grimes inside out I'll never know, such a great turning circle for a big guy, didn't seem to miss a kick JKH for screaming at pedo where to fill space during the match sim while pedo was stuffed from the previous contest Jack watts for both taking the time to have a chat about black labs and the work he was doing with white in rehab. "bunny in the middle" was White catching short kicks and hand balling back and watts was all encouragement and coaching him towards the end when white looked tired to "concentrate" special mention to Kent, Vandenberg (more of a unit than I thought, dunn sized & moved well, wasnt happy with his shoulder early hanging around the rehab guys) & Petracca (even if he missed the last set shot of full ground with the whole team watching after an elongated approach) To those that have written reports prior to much with more substance I thank you, you either type faster or have more time and patience than my self, it's most appreciated!5 points

It was both rpfc, a few players, no names, have admitted that they were nowhere near the required level of fitness till Misson started his program, don't forget he said it would take 3 years The two way running was poor, both Lumumba and Garlett have come in and are showing the way, Garlett is already regarded as one of the best two way runners at the club, ever But agree a lot was in the head, also agree what I am seeing at training needs to transfer to game day but with chatting to the players there is belief that what Roos says will work works, it is all very simple, he doesn't over complicate, to quote one, EVERYBODY is on the same page now, you look up and there are options everywhere4 points

Based on how and if he recovers and what the medico's see as his future. If towards the end of the year he comes back and trains and starts to play at Casey even limited time the staff will have some idea of how he is going. No one is suggesting that he doesn't have the footy smarts and talent - it is purely whether his body will let him play at the highest level. I suggest by the end of the year the medico's will have an opinion and a new contract will be based on that opinion. If there is some confidence that he can physically get back to the Trengove of his first two years as opposed to the slow as treacle and can't kick over 40 metres Trengove of the last 2 years then he may get another contract. The problem most of us have is I have used a fair amount of the word "if" above. I hope he can come back.4 points

Seriously we are high if we don't stick with Jackson. He has been the single greatest thing to happen to this club since 1964. I would be totally shocked and disappointed if we went down the instability route for no reason.4 points

To give reasons why, it is not the personal insults, that's just like the schoolyard where the kid wants to big note himself, they end up falling over in the end I am just getting bored with a small minority sniping at everything and everybody, some think they are being funny, they're not, I am guilty myself sometimes of retaliating, but so are others who just get sick of the same minority, you can only turn the other cheek so many times I am nearly over Demonland The AGM thread turned into a tanking debate, that was over ages ago, the AGM was a positive experience for most, but can it just be like that, hell no let's start raking up history again We have a thread about Colin Sylvia, who gives a flying, he ceased to be a player two years ago, let's dedicate a thread or topic to Jack Fitzpatrick, an easy target on here, who has persevered through Chronic Fatigue, serious shoulder issues and Diabetes to keep himself on the list, when others, supposedly a lot better player than him, are being delisted. Let's debate what size balls he has to keep rocking up I tried to provide a bit of a more personal insight into the training, obviously this is not appreciated by some, I am not sure why, perhaps instead of just sniping , they would like to explain why I just tried to provide a bit of colour to anybody, who unlike the lucky few, can't actually get to a training session We have some really good reporters as well, which I acknowledge, Ruffles and George on the Outer, to name a couple, going to the same session, I don't agree with some things they write, but I can write why and they debate it the whole idea of a forum The other thing I allowed was for myself to be identified, both in writing and in photographs, I have nothing to be ashamed of I don't hide behind a keyboard or nickname, I have no respect whatsoever for those that do and snipe at those that don't4 points

Getting the ball out of the backline has always been about movement and workrate. We have moaned for years about not getting the ball moving from full back. IMO this has never been about strategy - it has been about laziness. Our fullback has looked up and seen statues in red and blue jumpers. You watch the good teams - running patterns, leading over and over again until someone is freed up and then breaking hard to make the switch effective. On the switch, it is essential that this hard work continues with the next option(s) up the field. Too many times we switch and the next player in line hasn't worked hard enough to get free. So the player with the pill stops and waits which turns off any advantage of switching in the first place. We keep talking about intricate games plans - but the number one part of any game plan is work rate to get yourself 3 or 4 steps clear of your opponent. Free space ( gained by workrate) makes any game plan look like a winner.3 points

The saddest thing biggestred is the essendon supporters who will buy every word of it and defend it aggressively, I feel for them a bit, when they axe does fall they will feel very silly. Mind you I find it ridiculous that AFL officials are still in discussions with essendon but haven't clarified the situation to the public.3 points

Honestly theres more spin coming from essendon than from shane warne to gatting. They cant field a team as they dont have enough players because 20 of them are suspended. Because they stand accused of participating in a systematic doping regime. Thats the bottom line. All this other crap is just spin. "We want to protect their privacy" "We'll boycott unless they arent suspended" "We can't play v vfl players because health and safety" (this is the funniest thing ive ever heard. Vfl players arent good enough to play but the drugs we gave our players but we dont know what they were are so safe they cure cancer. I mean, honestly) Anything to make asada and the afl look like the bad guys while poor little essendon havent done anything wrong.3 points

Exactly, because if we were to choose a team from training reports, it would seem Shannon Byrnes would be getting a game ahead of Viney. Viney's statistics are impressive for his first two years... Average disposals 17.5(2013) & 19.9(2014) Average tackles 4.2(2013) & 4.4(2014) And he has played 33 games in his first two seasons and should played his 50th later this year.3 points

What has got me optimistic is everybody is putting their hand up for Round 1 if they are fit, Petracca has just stood out the last couple of sessions. I reckon a sub appearance as a forward would give him a taste, he is bound to feature in the NAB cup anyway. Vandenberg, Billy Stretch are doing everything now, don't think Oscar Mc will get a gig early, defence is too settled, but he is a work in progress anyway Neal Bullen and White are on comeback trail at the moment Harmes from last year has not put a foot wrong post Xnas either Just over 30 players out on the track again for full session With all the talk of the new players, from what I have seen, Matt Jones will not be stepping aside to let one of them in the team, think he is the ultimate Roos role player at the club and Roos likes what he brings3 points

Saty, I'm another one who never posts but always read your training reports and much appreciate the effort you go to in everything including the personal insights and banter with the players. I hope you keep it up. To the haters, have you guys ever thought that maybe a really passionate supporter like Saty might actually give the players a bit of a boost at training? I agree that he has a pretty optimistic view on most players particularly the fringe players but maybe if more on here had similar views it might give these players the added confidence they need to improve rather than coming on here and reading the dribble that's been spoken of them over the last few years? Do you think hawthorn or sydney supporters put so much pressure and criticism on their younger less skilled players? Doubtful. Its funny though how its these more successful clubs that develop their less skilled low draft picks into decent players. Obviously the coaches and senior players have the biggest impact but I think it would be ignorant to think that supporters and public forums like this have no impact. We've got the coaches and some more senior players maybe the supporters are the last link in the chain? Obviously some of these guys aren't so young but when they aren't needed anymore they won't be on the list, I'm sure the club can figure that out. If they're on the list be a supporter and support! Maybe even support the supporters.....3 points

It will be a pity if TDI ceases to post. He has been willing, honest and light hearted in his reports. He has been balanced in his support yet concedes he believes OUR TEAM will win only 6-7 wins. TDI, This is my 10th year of being on this site. I just noted I have ticked over a month without a post which, for those that remember back when, a day without a post would have been unheard of. I don't even check in daily anymore and one of the only reasons I continue is to read your training updates. They provide great insight for those that can't attend rather than the cookie cutter interviews and pieces offered over the summer on the official site. I take from them what I choose and move on from the bits I don't care for. I don't agree with all you post but I don't expect to and take it as your insight or opinion borne of the same enthusiasm or insanity that we mainly all share for the MFC. It's sad that others can't do the same as the site will be lesser without your input. All the best. Go Dee's. BRFE.3 points

This thread is distasteful. JT is a guy that has worked tireslessly for our club. He get Sweet FA respect from some here and he deserves more. Has clearly received devastating injuries and is working his backside off to try to come back and play again. No-one knows whether he will return but he is giving it his best shot which is more than can be said for some our players over the past decade. He has my support and I wish him the very best. His best football is fantastic. Lets all hope he can get back on the park to show us.3 points

Less than a month to go before the opening of our NAB Challenge campaign and no doubt the training sessions will step up a gear from here. I'm assuming there's the usual 9.15am session on tomorrow at Gosh's Paddock and look forward to reports from those who can make it down there. While robust debate is important on Demonland, some posters are acting under the assumption that they have license to engage in personal attacks on those with whose opinions they disagree. Please remain respectful of other posters and be careful if you wish to keep posting here. Thanks.2 points

I recall hearing last Sept/Oct that the delay in PJ's contract extension was related to the contract term. If PJ is signed up for only 1 year then it may be true that he wanted longer but didn't get it. I was surprised at the delay because Paul Roos had extended to 2016 so I thought (hoped) as a minimum PJ would do the same. I hope Bartlett consulted the AFL before he renewed PJ for only 1 year. Afterall they wouldn't want to see us go downhill again in a few years. Barlett is yet to establish his own credentials, IMHO. His first foray into the public domain (remember the Melboune will be the like the New York Yankees interview) was less than an auspicious start. He was ridiculed a fair bit in the press over that one. Now something like this (if true) has been leaked. ATMO Bartlett has no credits in the bank, IMHO and if it was a choice between Bartlett vs PJ I would take PJ every day of the week!!2 points

It's a good move because, apart from playing, Burns has a coaching/player development role at Casey and he's going to be instrumental in ensuring consistency of playing style throughout the group no matter at what level, something which in my view broke down last year although admittedly this was due partly to the fact that there was a lack of depth at Casey to cope with a style of play that relies on running and fitness.2 points

I also ask why this has come out less than a week after the AGM? Don't pay any attention to the crap posted by some on this site. As a country member I (and I'm sure many others) greatly enjoy your reports and look forward to them. So keep posting and trust the mods to keep the discussion on track!2 points
