POSTGAME: Rd 06 vs Brisbane

Was just thinking about the clubs moves wrt King v Buckley.

I love the freedom theyโ€™re playing with.

Pretty sure it would be less fun to watch if Bucks had gotten the gig.

At least he shows up for post-match pressers. Most journos can't be stuffed and just report based on what the few hustling journalists ask.

Kudos to the Club for organising and marketing a truly spectacular day. Congrats to the supporters who turned up wearing something green. Congrats to all those MCC/MFC supporters who got in the swing of things with the jig and scarf waving.

(I really would like to see the scarf "lassoo" wave a MFC thing after each goal but to a signature song.)

Thank you to Kingy and the boys for bringing back the pleasure of watching my team play a brilliant style of football.

I'll sleep well tonight.

I'm not one to get overexcited by merch but I want one of those green Jim caps very bad.

I know they sold out but if anyone knows anything that might led to something let us know.

You're probably right there. I vocally wanted Buckley, thought we needed his persona to help sell the club.

Happy to be wrong on that. The King effect has been truly transformational. And in one preseason. The game plan, belief, playing to the strengths of the individuals has been enormous. Footy is so so much more enjoyable like this.

Thought Latrelles pass to Langford in the last quarter I think was awesome and Langford kicked the goal too.

For a first yr player to not only see Langford as he is running flat out but stick the pass to is very promising for the future.

How good was latrells pass to van rooyen in the final quarter?

Loved the Pickett lads post game interview. Koz was asked, what's the rule from the coach about when you're in the midfield and when do you forward.

He just laughed and *said oh Kingy just tells me to go out and have fun

*Or something close to it.

So happy to see Chin really develop into a fantastic offensive and defensive player. He just held on for a couple of years, but has now just developed into a really important part of our backbone in the team.

Lastly, loved the way we iced the game. Not by turning around and chipping it backwards being too defensive and safe.

Instead we still worked it forward to twice get a mark inside f50 to run the clock down.

Really determined team effort.

I reckon they'll rub Pickett out because they just always do.

Go Dees

Talk about a sliding doors moment.

We would have been boring as bat shy te!

Pickettโ€™s bump was as clean and fair as it comes.

Answerth was unlucky the bump followed through onto Mihocek's shoulder.

Accidental contact from initial bump.

I couldnโ€™t have said it better myself

Just watched the replay and the crowd in the last sounded loud. Anyone who was at the game able to comment on the crowd noise directly following the siren? Was some of the loudest I can recall hearing (from viewing on the TV).

Edited by Ethan Tremblay

I just watched the final 2 minutes off the afl website. Such key moments like tholstrups kick out of defensive 50 that sparrow marked, van rooyen taking his 30 seconds & after harris took the mark & tried to go down the middle, sharp got an important handball away to a target that chewed up more time

It was so loud. The Irish jig music helped & bought atmosphere. It was just enjoyable to sit & watch that game

The supporters at the ground the last few games have been unbelievable. Today was particularly loud.

We knew there wasnโ€™t much time left, but werenโ€™t sure just how much. At the siren the roar was huge. I screamed out โ€˜Thank [censored]!โ€™. ๐Ÿ˜‚

The lions player hit brodies hip, that's what got him dazed. Kozzie should be fine. But you never know with this tribunal. And the umps didn't pay a free

Kossie is now an AFL darling. He will be fine.

Also, hoe good is the Kolt

I was in the Shane Warne stand and it did get loud in the last quarter. But it was a nail-biting finish

The Lions were well represented in terms of support too. And they were reasonably loud too

41k is a good crowd for the match-up

As a spectacle, it was an excellent game of footy

I kept thinking that they were going to come over the top of us but we hung on

The Gawn tackle was a match-winning effort as Ashcroft was off to the races

One point I noticed. A couple of weeks ago Latrelle ran into the right forward pocket a couple of times and burned teammates going for glory, and they let him know about it on the ground. Today, exactly the same setup and he pinpointed a pass to The Roo for a goal. We're seeing visible improvement from him by the week as he learns the game at this level.

Haven't read through the thread so this mightโ€™ve been hashed already - but is anyone else suss on the Petty incident?

No sign of concussion / concussion symptoms at all until after that horrible turnover.

I donโ€™t know, just seems weird.

So glad King kept Latrelle and JVR despite the opinions on here

They are coming on

JVR still could be a star if we develop him right

I hope Koz is ok with that bumpโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Kozโ€™s bump landed on Answorthโ€™s shoulder to my eye. I assume thatโ€™s legal.

Checkers was the one that accidentally made the contact that caused the concussion.

It was a very unlucky incident and unintentional contact but if a suspension is to come it will be more than a week because of the concussion ie - high impact.

All four wins have had "that's the best win we've had in ages" vibes to them.

We had no business beating them with the respective sides fielded. We fell 16 points behind, and then after throwing an incredible third quarter at them, we fell behind at the start of the fourth. The maturity to come back from that, steady, get the 3-goal lead, and then hold on, was incredible.

And we did it without having Gawn or Koz play a blinder; Gawn, indeed, looked sick/injured/off today. Can't recall the last time we played a game like this without Gawn dominating, to be honest.

King mentioned pre-season that he wanted to see versatility in our players. That's starting to pay off. Fritsch up on the wing today worked really well. Tholstrup looked at home at half-back, as did Langdon. Langford tore up the wing, when he's ear-marked for inside mid. Latrelle got up the ground today too.

When we're scoring 100 points and our best players are Langford, Langdon, Chandler and Sparrow, you know something's going well.

Finally, a note on the crowd. 41,000 today, probably 25,000-odd were MFC supporters, maybe more, but the noise we made as we surged in the second half and then held on late was intense. We've been filling Levels 1-3 of the members weekly, and against mid/low-drawing sides like St Kilda, GC and Brisbane. The vibe at the game is the best it's been since 2018, I feel, and it shows - I don't think it's a complete coincidence that our four MCG games have been great whilst our two road trips haven't. We still have MCG games against Richmond, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn, Geelong and the Dogs to come, so let's hope we can keep the strong crowds and the noise up.

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG after a dismal performance in Gather Round to face the reigning dual Premiers Brisbane. What do expect to see from the Dees today?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.ย
