The Stynes family are delighted with the success of Jim’s Game, and of course, the result. Brian Stynes contacted us shortly after the match with heartfelt thanks for the banner and the sea of green Jim’s caps.

Apologies for the quality of the pictures

There was no pic of Jimmy on the banner at the family’s request. They didn’t want to make it all about Jimmy, rather, the Jim Stynes Foundation.

My bestie Mumma Frittata holding up the target for her boy (the goal that resulted from a fifty).

PS I held the target up for one of Sharpie’s goals which is purely the reason he slotted it.

You’re welcome! 😂

Good work Ghosty. Plenty of noise from the crowd yest, was awesome to hear.

Matty Whelan said this during preseason while we were watching Koz and Trelly at Gosch’s. He said they don’t have to see one another to know where one another is.

Wowee we have some fun years ahead.

Any more Picketts we can nab? 🤣

One thing I thought was quite a poor decision was JVR late.

He got that mark with maybe 1.10 left.

He used the full 30, which was perfect.

But then he took a shot on goal which I’m sure landed on Harris Andrews head for a mark. Giving Brisbane a chance to take the ball up the middle or wing.

I think in that situation, JVR should have used the full 30, and then passed it to whichever demon was on his left, open.

I’m certainly no expert at tactics, interested on thoughts of those who are.

What’s the right decision there?

We were I guess skilled enough and fortunate enough to stop them getting through one last time but it’s a 50:50 that thankfully went out way.

I had a great view of this at level 2.

JVR marked the ball just outside 50 and Brisbane where man on man, preventing another short pass. So I think JVR intentionally kicked to the top of the goal square.

We were lucky that Miocheck was called to stand, it may have been worth a 50m penalty as the current rule is that all oppo players must clear a 9 meter radius if there's a mark or kickout near the goal square.

I noticed that the Brisbane supporters always just chant Lions when they play down here. They're still in denial that their team was liquidated 30 years ago and their best players packed off to Queensland.

I don’t mind listening to GH when we are up and about because you can tell how much it pains him and just how hard he is trying not to say anything positive about us.

Yes it’s petty but I’ve got a long memory.

Yeah, nah - he is a [censored] and I’d use an AI filter to transform his commentary into his loyal brother’s. That would be Sugar sweet.

Ahhh, Gerard Healey, the man who spurned the Dees and prevented us from winning the 1987 premiership. Who we put back in his play melb v swans '87 qualifying final. A truly elite player in his day, and a great pity we couldn't hang on to him until that glory era 87-91. I do think he is acknowledged us as a team to be respected. My only crit. on him these days is his super-critical takes on any player mistakes, or what they could have/ should have done in the heat of battle...

I too didn’t think his kick was the right play either. He had Pickett down the line who you’d back to win or square the contest with his man or force it OOB.

I also really would have loved to see Windsor stick that tackle on Cameron.

Seriously though we defended Harris’s next kick really really well and Cameron was full tilt and he’s a ball of muscle.

We made lots of mistakes as did Brisbane but if this is what we’re going to be watching this year I’ll take it every day of the week. Also just had my over 50 heart check and it’s ticking magnificently so apparently that feeling of it beating a hole in my chest during the entire last quarter each week is totally fine.

Describes the whole of the DL game day thread!

He absolutely should get off but there seems to be a big fat grey area on where ‘football act’ ends and ‘duty of care’ begins. I can easily see the fact he chose to bump and the outcome of a concussion getting a week.

Do they look at his record in determining the outcome?

Exactly how I feel when he is the commentator. Rightly or wrongly I think he cannot resist saying something negative about the club.

It may have something to do with his regular references to ‘a number of my friends are Dees’ supporters’

Thanks squad and you GW for doing all this.

I'm sure it's all very time consuming.

But a beautiful tribute to a wonderful man.

Gone but never forgotten, due to good people like yourselves.

Great effort. He deserves it . And all those involved, the accolades for your hard work.

So many of us may do well and buy a mship which is great and very helpful.

But there is a lot like this stuff that goes on behind the scenes, that we just don't know about and/ or, take for granted.

The Irish fiddling was genius. It irritated me at first as I didn't know why it was happening. Then I fully embraced it.

But I'm sure if it annoyed me at first it drove Lions supporters insane.

Salt in the wound every time we kicked a goal.

Brilliant.

The lions are now officially owned by our club.

We have them on a nice short leash, never to be released.

I don’t know for sure but I’d say they wouldn’t in terms of determining guilt/innocence but they do when dishing out punishments. What they ‘should do’ and what they ‘do’ are two different things though.

Yeah I thought this was an error too. I would’ve thought taking the majority of our players out of the 50, both behind JVR along the boundary and in the centre square would force the lions players to choose to stay in 50, opening space for a lead, or man up and outnumber behind JVR on the field. Take the full 30 seconds, then chip pass around twice and the game is done.

I have a funny story about Jim Stynes.

When he played his 100th game (at Waverley) the person in the cheer squad designated to take photos of the run through didn't get any. For weeks after I kept avoiding Jim's calls to my work and home to get a copy of a photo he could blow up and frame. I then had a brainwave. The Southern Stand at the G was being demolished at the time so at another game we wrote Congratulations Jim Stynes 100 games on the back side of the run through where nobody would ever see it and would give that to him instead. All went to plan until he noticed the top deck of the Olympic Stand at the top of the photo 😂

4 specific critical goal assists was very good, included were 2 excellent contested marks. King needs to say to him,... Son I'm backing you come what may for the next month or two, give yourself a chance!

I think he has been told to just keep on jumping for his marks, if any player can take 2 to 3 contested marks at half forward is going to be a very dangerous forward

Yep. I rewatched just before.

Lever was open, completely - but then whilst being open, tells JVR to go for goal.

I think both could learn a bit off it.

I nearly had a coronary watching this game. Bloody loved it though. Whatever King is putting in the water should be analyzed, he has done an incredible job of turning this team around - including losing Trac, Clarrie, May and having some pretty major injuries. Also (probably) worth of analysis is the period from 2022-2025.

Apart from the points, there were so many positives from this. We are giving the kids a go, and winning. I was unsure on the drafting of L Pickett so highly, but I was very, very wrong.

Sharps turnaround from super sub to super performer has been unbelievable.

So many other positive contributions (big and small): Culley, Chin, Howes, Sparrow etc.

I thought we'd only win 5-6 games this season, the performance to date really is incredible.

Was just checking the MFC app.

Jefferson’s jersey from yesterday has one bid, of $170.

Thought you liked him more than that, Picket Fence. 😂

Hope Petty is ok.

That aside I still don’t think we know what our best team looks like yet. At times some silly errors / disposals but considering a first gamer, Jeffo playing game number 8 and Moose his 1st for the club we still haven’t fully clicked yet.

Latrelle’s pass to Roo in the last, loving his work, he’s got so much more to learn and he’ll become an awesome addition to our team.

Max brought the ball to ground plenty.

...which may be part of the gameplan, sometimes bringing the ball to ground can get the ball moving forward more quickly. We see how fast we move the ball out of the contest.

A couple of minutes to go and lions goal we are 2 points ahead. The ball goes back to the centre, Ashcroft gathers the ball! Right then I thought we are gone he will run into the forward line they will goal. Thank God for big Max and his tackle on Ashcroft. Holding the ball and we get it back right there the game was won. What more could Max have done yesterday. He is without doubt the best ruckman the MFC has ever had I suspect he is right up with the champions of the AFL.

And we still have three premiership players to return. Joy!

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
