I'd just like to say how disappointed I am overall with the Fremantle Football Club. A golden opportunity presented itself on their home deck against a side that had 2nd place sewn up and they faltered hard. I hope they are ripping the place down and getting stuck into them big time in the media over there similar to how we did in 2017.

The biggest disappointment for 2024 for mine.

Well i think he still plays at a similar level like he did for us. Hasn't really improved that much from what i have seen. With his trade we got Windsor and Jeffo. Just with Windsor alone, i think we already won that trade.

Thanks for the 3rd quarter in a certain game in Perth in 2021 but no loss TBH, Caleb Windsor is far more likely to be a long-term valuable contributor to the Dees.

Jacko and Failmantle had a prime chance to be the feel-good story of the comp this weekend, but they completely blew it. Jackson should have been wise to this mob's history. A place good footballers go to die.

Plus they blew a golden chance to stick a knife in Carlton.

Agree with others Jackson hasn't turned out to be a surperstar, he might still though, very young in ruck terms. How much had Gawny achieved before turning 23?

We didn't really need him to a superstar, just competetive in the ruck and around the ground. He was the perfect foil for Max, faster, good at ground level and enthusiastic. As a one / two punch they would grind every other ruck pairing into the turf.

I said at the time Freo were crazy to use up so much capital to go after Jackson.

Not because he's not going to be a  star (though I wondered if he was driven enough- still do), but because they had an A grade ruck, Jackson is not a natural forward and had more pressing needs than another ruck.

There was also the opportunity cost with the picks they gave up, and his starting salary created challenges trading in other gun players, nor to mention cap issues when it came time to resign Brayshaw and other guns.

Two full seasons later, I haven't seem anything to suggest I got it wrong

Surely by Jackson's second season they would have hoped to be a genuine flag contender. Hell, just a few weeks ago (after flogging us for the second time) they were in the top 4!.

But for the second year in a row since trading in Jackson, they have missed finals again.

And might have made finals if Jackson had put the team on his shoulders in the port game and been a difference maker, something you expect from your highest paid players.

Like riccardio leaving red bull, the smart play for Jackson was to stay with the dees for 3 more years and then go to freo on a mega contract - maybe as a two time premiership player (imagine how different 2023 would have been with Jackson in the team).

Was playing his best footy - as were Freo - when he was rucking one-out with Darcy on the sidelines… was shocked they paired him with that no-name ruckman last night (although we should go after that no-name given the state of our back-up rucking situation)

Imo the bigger immediate loss was a healthy Ben Brown. His experience and positioning straightened us up and made Fritsch a better player.

Good call on Brown. In hindsight though with what we saw from Ben in 2022 - 2024 we were fortunate to have the BBB we did for those last 3 games of 2021.

That mid season mini pre-season was a masterstroke.

No fault of Ben's but he wasn't able to get his knee right since.

Imagine how much better our side would be if Luke Jackson in it? I think his loss to our side has been immeasurable since 2021…

If only he didn’t miss the family Sunday roast…reckon we would have won the 2023 QF final against the Pies with Luke Jackson and we wouldn’t have gone chasing Grundy.

I would have put him on the same coin Gawn, Trac and Oliver were on and matched the years Frem was offering.

The club obviously thought it wasn't feasible and going to line up with our payment structure.

He knew he wouldn't be the same player without Gawn's tutelage, he took the $$$ and ran as fast as he could good luck to him.

From memory the damage was already done when he stayed in Perth after the GF and Fremantle were shouting him and his family Crayfish and oysters every night for beachside lunches.

We had him for 1.5 years out of 4 and I'm being generous.

The 2 finals series in 22 and 23 his body wouldn't allow him to compete anymore not his fault in any way but this list decision has cost us another flag.

Yep have to agree, hopefully Kalani is a similar type.

Well, sure. On the other hand 2m key fwds are like hen's teeth at trade time. No BBB likely no 2021 flag. So getting him on the 4 years needed to peel him out of North may have cost us a theoretical 2nd flag, but the alternative may well have been zero flags. I know which I prefer.

He has dropped of late in the season, perhaps heading back to the comfort won't be the best for his career in the long run

Could see him move just like Jesse did and we all see how Jesse has turned his career around

Perhaps.

Still a disgrace to the game though, I don't know who the hell they think they are.

Move back to the Dees? Good idea.

23, he's the same age as Rivers.

He’s an ahole - everyone on here ‘loved’ his exit - ‘all class, blah, blah’

FO and stay FOed

The Luke Jackson trade has effectively netted us Jefferson, Windsor and (checks crystal ball) Andrew Brayshaw.

Touch wood about the kids, of course, but that salary cap space is golden pre-Tassie.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
