Trade Targets 2025

Will Brodie is a no brainer. 25 yr old who racked up 640 touches 2 years back and 11 Brownlow votes in a team that went 16-7.    Crazy he hasn't even got a single game this year. Reeks of politics.

Crazy that he racked up 11 Brownlow votes. He’s one paced, poor ball user and not a great runner. There’s no politics there

From a "Whatever happened to Will Brodie?" thread on Reddit...

Quote

Very basically as I understand it:

Will Brodie is a very good extractor but that’s is basically all he can do. He’s not versatile, can’t defend and has no tank. Freos midfield in 22 had David Mundy, no Fyfe and no Young. With the new midfield mix, Brodie simply doesn’t fit. Freo fans want him ahead of Jaeger OMeara but JOM has lined up at HB, HF, W and inside mid all in the same match which Brodie simply cannot do. If a midfielder is injured, Matt Johnson will spend more time in the middle with Neil Erasmus coming in. Brodie could theoretically play a few games but is more likely to request a trade IMO

TLDR; Brodie doesn’t really fit into Freos midfield ATM

There's dozens of players in the AFL that fit that description.  They still get a game now and then.  If he'd be stinking up lower levels then fine, but he's dominating the WAFL.   No player is perfect and he clearly knows how to find the ball.  The knock on disposal is noted, if you applied that criteria to our side 15 guys wouldn't get a game.

Serong, Brayshaw, Hayden Young haven't missed a game. Fyfe has missed 1, I believed they used that to give Neil Erasmus a go who's a top 10 pick who dominates the WAFL and has barely played.

How many midfielders in top 6 teams / top 4ish quality midfields like Freo's fit the description of one paced, average skills and poor running?

He's pretty much an identical player to Dunstan who we gave a bit of a look at in his first year then never got another go because we knew what we had.

If we can't field 4 better mids next year then sure, bring him over, otherwise don't waste the spot.

Sam Wicks from the Swans should be a player of interest given ANB will be traded.

He seems like a dropkick. Caused a rift with his teammates for acting inappropriately with the girlfriend of another Swans player. Has now been rubbed out for a week in the VFL.

Ex girlfriend I believe.

He might need a change of scenery and we need a hard running high half forward.

I get to watch a lot of the swans and imho he is the classic example of an AFL footballer that doesn’t do anything particularly well

Personally don’t feel that’s a need we need to fill

With alot of our midfield depth gone and now Nibbler on the way out, I wouldn't be against the idea to select Mitch White with a late draft pick to help replace some of the leadership that will be walking out the door.

Separately, with Nibbler no longer working a HFF, we have the opportunity to play someone with a more natural attacking bias, though this would require Goodwin to adjust his game plan....in reality we play alot of defensive forwards and have few natural goal kickers atm.

Agreed. Brodie would be a good addition.

Freo preseason preview

Brodie only played five games in the senior side in 2023, missing parts of the season due to an ankle injury. The midfielder has put together a strong pre-season, consistently matching up against other bonafide midfielders and will look to slot himself back into the starting 22 in 2024.

Yup like this one, he is a classy half forward.

Another I believe we should go hard at, especially if ANB chooses Adelaide is Rachele.  This kid is a star in the making and has the potential to be a Toby Greene style player.  nothing saying he wants out but he did make comments about not getting midfield time in the media, hope we ask some questions.

Mitch is a pretty solid VFL player and at times does look a cut above but surely we have to back our youngsters and development

Are we going to get Dan Houston??  Do we have a legit chance here without trading too many good picks considering ANB trade?

Who cares we need forwards not half backs.

Melbourne's interest wasn't to the level of the South Aussies.

Probably because of Houston I imagine

That's very disappointing if true. If Houston is a 10/10, Cumming is an 8/10 and as a free agent would cost us nothing to trade for. He's a far better option than Houston from a list management perspective. Neither player is going to be the difference between us winning a flag or not, so why trade off a pick 6 when you can have a freebie AND draft a pick 6 young elite talent to get over a decade service.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
