Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Yze replacement

Yes he did. At the end of 2005, we offered him a one-year deal. Essendon offered him two, which he took for the security. If Melbourne offered him two, he would have stayed. That's fact.

How's work at EY?

To put it kindly he was an absolute potato for us.

Put in zero effort and simply did not want to be there.

Haha, I meant I assume you know him through EY, but I guess you could know him through any channel.

So are we actually asking the right question here?

Do we need an Yze replacement or a forwards coach or both.

For what it's worth, I think Yze has largely escaped criticism for the lack of forward connection in the past few years, when perhaps he was actually due some.  Was a part of our 2021 premiership, by all acounts a great coach and a great player in his day and for both those things I'll be forever greatful.  But maybe he has past his usefulness at the MFC and I think this actually presents a great opportunity for renewal.

Just throwing some names out there as potential expert forward coaches Garry Lyon, David Schwartz, Mathew Lloyd, Brad Johnson.

A great run with player who use to hit the scoreboard. His dad was a great Melbourne man before Heff got drafted.

I think the media has stolen a few that would be good, (apart from Buckley), I wouldn’t mind Joey or Johnson, of all the windsocks on the tube, they seem to be the least involved in group think. Daniel Cross I would like to have seen coach, from the few training sessions I ever saw with him seemed serious, but is maybe more of a fitness guy than strategy. (He has been playing up in Albury).

I would hope that because we are a big and stable club, that we don’t need the comfort of a ‘name‘ and actually go and find someone who deserves a go on merit. As much as I respect the man, Ratten, seems cooked. Also I don’t feel we need a ‘Melbourne’ player, Bruce not so sure, he always seemed more instinct than insight. Carr and Newman both seem to have a clue, and while he probably wouldn’t come back, I thought Jennings was the brains of Roo’s operation and that we lost a step when he left, I would love him back as what he could do with our crew who are now so well drilled could be devastating to the comp.

I would like to see some game day modifications, I don’t think we are the best at switching from pockets to corridor and I don’t think we take the best advantage of kick-ins with the players we have. Our playing group is now at a very advanced stage of cohesion and discipline, I love them for it. I don’t think it would hurt to risk a bit more flicking of switches, the players have earned the trust.

And really please don’t feed trolls, it clogs up the thread, at best they are clueless and loveable supporters who love the same club, but some of the dross about Goody belongs on big footy, is nauseating, and just simply troll behaviour. I get we are all hurting I am so frustrated it I can barely watch the footy without wanting to rant. But we were moments from winning, and while we had no luck, I would argue that the games shouldn’t have even been close, with a reasonable return both games were done like 2021, we had the pressure and effort, just merde out of luck. Goody has done great things as part of a team, better than Northey, Balme and Daniher, people talking about him like he is Neeld is pathetic.

One thing that is a necessity in my book is a permanent attachment to Melksham either as player or coach in waiting or both. Aren't sure how to get this done, but it is an imperative, as we do not have a lot of recent quality up to speed retired players available.

Only thing is Bassett was responsible for the backs and forwards at various times at Port. Both ends of the ground have been hugely flakey over his tenure. I know we were previously interested, but I'd say it's unlikely now given his track record at Port.

To be fair, he didn't have much to work with. Houston had a good year but the rest of the backline, including the overrated Allir Allir are strugglers. Forward line lacks quality personnel as well. Bit like our supporters blaming Stafford for our forward woes when we can't get our forwards on the park. And when we do, the mids sit it on the forwards heads.

Replacing Yze could be more complicated than we think. It was mentioned in an earlier post and confirmed by Yze that he was the match day coach in the coaches box and Goody was the counsellor down on the boundary. This suggests to me that Goody is aware of his tactical match day short comings and acknowledges that is Yze's strength.

If so that is more than a line coach role but almost senior coach material. It also begs the question whether Goody has been vilified unfairly and the coach upstairs should be held more responsible for the match day gaff's.

I believe Goody is a very good club coach, man manager game plan development. The replacement should complement these traits and have a skill set to complement and cover the deficiencies

Our forward and backs have also been flakey over the journey with both Chaplin and Stafford at the helm. So do we make a blanket statement about them too?

We have no idea the impact Bassett had on their group. Let's not pretend we do.

Remind me when our backs have been flakey over the journey? I assume you will describe a sustained period not a game here and there. Maybe they have but I cant recall.

Our defence became sound around midway 2020. Prior to that we were a very good offensive team but a poor defensive team going the other way.

It why we traded out Frost and paid a fortune for May and Lever.

I reckon you’re all on the wrong track with these tried before guys.

For ball movement (what a crazy title) & stoppages AND for forward tactics I’d look at one contracted bloke & one untried:

Mick Stinear has the Ds AFLW team humming … another a difference game style the women understand how to structure the stoppages and the quick break. Minor problem is he seems to enjoy successfully setting new standards with the women’s team

Big Benny Brown’s work with the forwards is similarly impressive. A quick look at the scoring shows an ability of the Ds forwards to mix up how the ball enters the forward zone and how the players perform to their strengths

They are also miles and away the best team in it playing against several teams who are not yet up to standard. If they keep this list together they’ll win every year. The men’s team don’t have this luxury.

If this is the case with BBB why not include him in the senior AFL coaching staff as forwards coach and make his transition from playing to coaching an easy one.

Surely he would be more knowledgeable than Staf in this regard and has fresh ideas to reinvigorate our forward mix.

Our backs have been flakey? Are you kidding me? The defensive part of our ground has been on the money since midway through 2020.

As for Bassett, no, we can only go on results and one of the reasons they yo yo in and out of the 8 and true contention is their unsophisticated defensive system. Either he's not a good communicator or Ken/him aren't great with ideas.

If you look at who they're targeting list wise, they haven't gone after an intercept partner for Aliir, which to me, is staggering.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
